Mass motorcycle ride will raise cash for mental health charity
Austin O'Callaghan will lead the ride
Austin O'Callaghan said his experience of the effects that working as a first responder has on mental health inspired him to take part in the Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride (DGR).
The annual global event takes place on May 18 and seeks to increase awareness of prostate cancer and men's mental health.
Mr O'Callaghan is hosting the 2025 ride for the third year at his hotel, Barberstown Castle, in Kildare.

It is expected to draw a record number of riders this weekend – who will wear their most dapper outfits while raising funds for the global men's health charity Movember.
'DGR is more than just a motorcycle ride,' Mr O'Callaghan said.
'It's a movement that transcends borders, bringing together all types of distinguished bike enthusiasts in a common mission to raise awareness and support men's health.'
Mental health is particularly close to the hotelier's heart as he witnessed many people struggling during his 25 years as a garda, during which he spent 20 years investigating serious crimes and murders.

'I have been one of the lucky ones as my own mental health was always strong and I learned coping skills, you had to look at things in a different way, but I've seen people go down the rabbit hole of alcohol and depression – it isn't a nice place to go,' he said.
Movember Phone Booth's will be stationed at the Barberstown Castle hotel at the ride gets underway this weekend.
The installation invites people to share their stories an experiences with their mental health.
This years marks ten years of partnership between Movember and The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride.
This year, tens of thousands of dapper-dressed bike enthusiasts and health advocates aer expected to take to the streets in cities across the globe.

Cork primary school pupils learning how to cook through new Tesco programme
More than 80 Scoil Barra Naofa Monkstown pupils are currently taking part in the free six-week Stronger Starts Cooks programme. The course, launched by Tesco Ireland, will be delivered to over 3,000 children, mostly fifth calss students, across 42 primary schools in Ireland. Among the highlights of the programme is a visit to a local Tesco store, where students will get to explore the journey of food from farm to shelf, take part in a budgeting challenge and enjoy food sampling sessions. Munster Rugby legend and proud Cork man Donncha O'Callaghan is an ambassador of the programme. Mr O'Callaghan said giving children the tools to make healthy choices is what he 'loves most' about the programme. 'As a dad, I know how important it is to give kids the tools they need to make healthy choices, and that starts with understanding food,' he said. 'What I love most about the Stronger Starts Cooks programme is that it's not just teaching kids how to cook, it's sparking their curiosity about what they eat, where it comes from, and how to make smart decisions in the kitchen and beyond. 'It's real-life learning that sets them up for the future, and I'm proud to be involved.' Stronger Starts Cooks builds on the success of the Stronger Starts Food programme, launched in 2021, which provides free weekly packs of fruit and vegetables to children in DEIS schools. Research commissioned by Tesco Ireland, which surveyed 1,016 parents nationwide, found that 92pc of parents support additional food education in the school curriculum and 44pc of parents feel their children could cook a basic meal from scratch. The research found that almost 80pc of parents believe children lack sufficient knowledge about nutrition, with 54pc saying their own children don't know enough. Only 51pc of parents talk to their children about healthy eating only occasionally or not at all, according to the research.

'An Garda Siochana has commenced an investigation following complaints received from a family relative of an older person.' M50 motorist caught at almost twice speed limit during Garda bank holiday operation

More info A motorist was detected driving at almost double the speed limit on the M50 over the weekend. The driver was clocked doing 188km/h in a 100km/h zone on the motorway near Templeogue. The detection was made as part of an extensive roads policing operation carried out by gardai between 7am on Thursday, May 29 and 7am on Tuesday, June 3. One person sadly lost their life on the roads over the weekend while 14 serious collisions resulted in 14 people suffering severe and life-threatening injuries. Gardai manned more than 830 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints over the weekend. Over 4,000 breath tests and around 270 oral fluid tests were carried out, leading to 167 arrests for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Officers were also out in force to clamp down on speeding on the country's roads, with almost 3,000 drivers detected over the speed limit. These included: 99km/h in a 50km/h zone on R212 at Clones, Co. Monaghan 114km/h in a 60km/h zone on R147 at Dunboyne, Co. Meath 119km/h in a 80km/h zone on R148 at Broadford, Co. Kildare Almost 500 vehicles were seized over the weekend. According to figures released by An Garda Siochana, 99 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied while a further 380 were seized for having no tax or insurance. Hundreds of Fixed Charge Notices were also issued over the weekend. These were for offences including: Using Mobile Phones – over 210 Unaccompanied learner drivers – over 215 No seatbelts – over 70 Commenting on the figures, a Garda spokesperson said: "An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road."
