FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A record heat wave that spread across the East Coast of the United States during the first week of summer has child advocates warning parents and caretakers about the risks of heatstroke to children left inside hot vehicles.
So far this year, nine children have died after being left unattended in vehicles in California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico , New Jersey and North Carolina, according to Kids and Car Safety, which collects data on hot car deaths. Five died in June.

2024 Kia EV9: A Year of Testing Cemented Its Award-Winning Status

Brady added, "Love that there's a physical button to activate the 360-degree camera system. That camera view was essential when I was navigating the EV9 in and out of an especially tight spot. The only way to improve this would be to position that camera activation control on the steering wheel the way Tesla does with the current Model 3 and Cybertruck." The EV9's lightning-quick fast-charging capability was another big perk. Kaufman again recounts, "Took the family on a road trip to San Diego and only had to charge once. I found a 150-kW fast charger in a mall parking lot not too far from our hotel, and just had half an hour of quiet time in the car while it added a little over 200 miles of range. At this point, I would absolutely prioritize charging speed over range for any EV I'd buy for myself." The EV9's seating flexibility also meant that whether we needed to ferry the kids, the dog, or half of a living room, the EV9 had the space. From ample legroom across all three rows (yes, even adults could fit in the third row) to quick entry via the power second-row seats, everything about the EV9 lent itself to practicality to suit whatever we needed to move. While we never truly needed it, the EV9's vehicle-to-load feature — which allows you to power home appliances using the car's battery — provided a level of comfort to the inner doomsday prepper within us.

Summer heat increases risk of child deaths in hot cars, advocates warn

Interview with Janette Fennell of Kids and Car Safety on protecting children from hot cars A record heat wave that spread across the East Coast of the United States during the first week of summer has child advocates warning parents and caretakers about the risks of heatstroke to children left inside hot vehicles. So far this year, nine children have died after being left unattended in vehicles in California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New Jersey and North Carolina, according to Kids and Car Safety, which collects data on hot car deaths. Five died in June. According to data from advocacy group Kids and Car Safety, on average, 38 children die each year from heatstroke inside a vehicle. Since 1990, at least 1,134 children have died in hot cars in the United States and at least another 7,500 survived with varying degrees of injury, according to data compiled by Kids and Car Safety. Why hot cars are so dangerous for kids Human-caused climate change keeps dialing up temperatures and extreme weather, scientists say. But the temperature outside doesn't have to be super hot for a child left in a vehicle to be affected by the heat, said Kathy Wall, director of Safe Kids Palm Beach County. "Inside, the vehicle can heat up 20 degrees in just 20 minutes," Wall said. "So if you imagine it's an 80 degree day, which in South Florida is a cool day, it could be over 100 degrees within 10 minutes inside the car." Hot car deaths can happen any time of year, and since 1998, every state but Alaska has reported a hot car death, according to the National Safety Council. In both 2018 and 2019, a record 53 children died after being left in hot cars. About 80% of the heat rise in vehicles happens in the first 30 minutes of a child being left inside, when maximum temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius), according to data compiled by Jan Null, a certified consulting meteorologist at San Jose State University. "Children sweat a lot less than adults do and their internal temperature can increase three to five times faster than an adult. So that's why it's just as important to make sure that your child isn't left in the vehicle, especially during these rising temperatures," said Capt. Karen Derogatis of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. Last week, a 5-year-old boy in Mansfield, Ohio, died after being left in a hot vehicle. It can happen to anyone While it's easy to place blame for leaving a child in a vehicle, even people trained to know the dangers have made that tragic mistake, Wall said. "It's not a socioeconomic group, it's not a cultural group," she said. "This sadly has happened to doctors, it's happened to dentists, it happened to school teachers, it's happened to child care workers. Nobody is exempt from this." Distraction often leads to forgetting about a child in the backseat, which is why it is important to create routines and reminders, she said. "It sounds crazy, but sometimes people get out of routines or are distracted, especially in today's world. There's lots going on in the news, lots going with families," she said. A parent who normally doesn't drop a child off at a day care facility might become distracted and forget that the child is in the vehicle, she said. Create a reminder that a child is in the backseat She encourages parents and caregivers to establish routines. "We have an acronym, ACT," Wall said. "A" stands for avoiding leaving a child unattended in a vehicle. "C" stands for creating a reminder that works best for you. Authorities suggest leaving a personal item such as a purse or briefcase in the backseat so you'll have to open the back door before locking the vehicle. "T" is to take action right away. "If you see a child in a car, don't try to figure out how long they've been in the car. Call 911 immediately," Wall said. Some newer cars offer warnings for drivers to check the backseat for passengers. Double checking the vehicle is key, said Derogatis, the fire captain. "If you make it a common habit, just like you would look in their rear view mirror to see if somebody's behind you, or if you look at your side view mirror to see if you want to switch lanes, make it habit to look in your rearview mirror, whether you have a child or an animal or anything, just to ensure that they are as safe as possible," she said.

'F1' marks debut of first IMAX theater in Daytona Beach

When 'F1: The Movie' opens this weekend at CMX Cinemas Daytona Luxury 12 at One Daytona, the Formula 1 action movie that was partly filmed in Daytona Beach will mark a new addition at the multiplex movie theater. 'F1' will be the first film to be displayed on a new state-of-the-art IMAX screen, the first commercial movie theater in Volusia County to offer that popular trademarked technology. According to a company announcement, the new theater is equipped with IMAX with Laser, IMAX's most advanced theater experience. The system is heralded for its crystal clear, lifelike images and precision audio generated by a 4K laser projection system that features a new optical engine, custom designed lenses and technology that delivers brighter images with increased resolution, deeper contrast and widest range of colors. Although the CMX Cinemas Daytona Luxury 12 is the only theater in Volusia County to offer IMAX, at least two other theaters offer other enhanced technology systems: Regal Pavilion in Port Orange offers RPX, which stands for Regal Premium Experience. It's a proprietary premium large-format system that enhances the movie-watching experience with larger screens, superior sound systems and comfortable, premium seating. In Deltona, Epic Theatres of West Volusia offers Epic XL, its own premium large-format auditoriums designed for a more immersive movie-watching experience, featuring larger screens, enhanced sound systems and upgraded seating. The same technology also is available at Epic Theatres of Palm Coast in Flagler County. Here's a look at the history and technology of IMAX. In its broadest definition, IMAX is a theatrical distribution platform that utilizes proprietary technology to create a more immersive cinematic experience for movie-goers. The platform includes IMAX cameras, special film formats, dual projector systems, stadium theater seats and larger theater screens. Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, William C. Shaw, and Robert Kerr invented the IMAX projection system in Montreal in the 1960s, according to information on the technology published by the Toronto Film School. Ferguson produced and shot one of the early IMAX films, 'North of Superior.' The first IMAX film was called 'Tiger Child.' It was a short documentary film written and directed by Canadian Donald Brittain. Filming took place in 10 countries and the film's world premiere was held at EXPO '70 in Osaka, Japan. The film attracted more than 64 million visitors in a nine-month period. In the beginning, the company was known as the Multi-Screen Corporation. Today, IMAX is headquartered in New York, Toronto and Los Angeles, with additional offices in London, Dublin, Tokyo, and Shanghai. The projector houses a state-of-the-art 4K laser projection system with a new optical engine and customized lenses, according to information posted by the Toronto Film School. In its piece, the Toronto Film School interviewed Adam Cuthbert, director of technical services for IMAX. In that role, he oversees a global team that maintains and enhances IMAX systems that encompass 1,000 IMAX screens in 89 countries. 'IMAX's locations are designed to immerse you into the movie, with curved screens that fill your field of vision, and customized seating that puts you closer to the action,' Cuthbert said. 'You can expect a system that delivers crystal clear, lifelike images and precision audio. Every element is fully integrated to our precise standards — clearest visuals and precision audio, projection technology, and theatre design — working together to create what is widely acknowledged as the gold standard for the film entertainment experience.' The Traumpalast Multiplex in Leonberg, Germany holds the title for the world's largest IMAX screen, stretching close to 70 feet high and 125 feet across and weighing 500 pounds. The screen is so large that it has set two Guinness World Records: one for the world's largest permanent IMAX screen and another for the largest permanent cinema screen. When it comes to audio, IMAX gives it just as much attention as it does the visuals. 'The IMAX Experience is much more than just a big screen,' Cuthbert said. 'On all titles played on our systems, we create a specialized track to take advantage of the unique capabilities of our system.' These capabilities are possible due to IMAX's proprietary sound processing software that enables dialogue, music and sound effects to be enhanced, making for a film soundtrack that is 'more realistic and impactful,' Cuthbert said. IMAX theatres also come with a multi-channel sound system, with speaker placements both behind the auditorium screen and around the theatre. Cuthbert says this creates a sound field that 'envelops you from every direction, immersing you right in the action.'
