Underground power cables likely to rid Vizag core area of electric poles by December 2026

The Hindu01-06-2025

A large part of power network in the core city area of Visakhapatnam will soon be free of electric poles, if the underground cable laying gets completed as per schedule by December 2026.
After witnessing the success of phase I of the underground power cabling, which was undertaken after Cyclone Hudhud laid poles to waste in October 2014, A.P. Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) is currently taking the project forward by laying underground base for a distance of 876 km under phase II at an investment of ₹973 crore as part of the Centre's Renovated Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
The RDSS is aimed to improve the performance and efficiency of power sector in the country. The objectives include reducing AT&C (Integrated Technical and Commercial) losses, improving the quality and reliability of power supply and making the power distribution sector financially sustainable.
Phase II was sanctioned last year, but work only began this financial year. Unlike the phase I, which provided underground network for 33kV, 11kV and LT lines, the phase II will cover only 33kV and 11kV lines up to the end of distribution transformers. The total project cost has been divided into ₹340 crore for the 33kV line and ₹633 crore for the 11kV line.
The works, began in the summer of 2025, progressed well with no rain hampering it. During this southwest monsoon, progress could be slowed or the work interrupted. However, the authorities plan to expedite the work after the onset of winter, completing the project by December 2026.
Speaking to The Hindu, APEPDCL superintending engineer for Visakhapatnanm district G. Shyambabu said only 33kV and 11kV lines will be covered in phase II. 'We will not take up LT lines (i.e. supply to domestic consumers) as was done in phase I. The underground cables were laid on every street and corner in phase I. However, proposals have been sent to the higher-ups to include the LT lines as well.'

Vizag lacks premier training institutes for Engg & Tech students

The rapidly developing Visakhapatnam city lacks premier training institutes for engineering and technology students as they move to other places like Hyderabad and Bangalore to explore their knowledge in advanced courses as per the market demand. The existing educational institutions also lack adequate laboratories for the specific domains chosen by the students. Stakeholders including the state and central governments have been urged to focus on these major challenges in Visakhapatnam, which is the largest city in AP, and the governments are also focusing on making the city the Financial Capital. A (Electronics) student S. Nitish Kumar said, 'I did not find any options to go for training in my specific domains in the city. My seniors and faculty suggested me to join institutes like C-DAC, but did not find any such institute. It would be useful and beneficial for many students like me if the state government focuses on setting up such institutes.' C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) is the premier scientific institute of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, known for its advanced computing and IT training programmes. It offers various postgraduate diploma courses, including the popular PG-DAC (Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Computing), which aims to bridge the industry-academic skill gap. Agreeing with Mr. Nitish, GITAM Deemed-to-be University's Electrical, Electronics & Communications Department P. Bharani Chandra Kumar, said, 'Yes, Visakhapatnam does not have at least one leading training institute. As per the current market conditions, the city urgently needs a premier training institute related to Artificial Intelligence, as AI is currently an adjunct to every B. Tech program. Every student should have knowledge of Computer Science and its advanced applications and AI.' Some educationists are of the opinion that engineering education should not rely solely on theory, but should emphasise practical learning through well-equipped laboratories. Advanced laboratories should be created, and the existing laboratories should be continuously upgraded and guided by industry-experienced teaching professors as outlined in the National Education Policy. 'Strengthening the laboratory infrastructure will help students acquire better practical skills and be industry-ready without the need for external training elsewhere. If the laboratories are properly equipped, students can acquire knowledge at the college level itself. To be honest, no educational institution, including government and private ones, has such advanced laboratories with expertise in the laboratory itself in Visakhapatnam,' said a senior professor from Andhra University, who did not want to be named. Speaking to The Hindu, Rushikonda IT Park Association vice-president O. Naresh Kumar, said, 'The proposal for a C-DAC Visakhapatnam centre was made in 2014 itself, but there has been no progress even today. Since the current Centre-State relations are good due to the coalition government, this is the right time to focus on it. Apart from C-DAC, Vizag also needs a Nixi, national internet exchange of India.' There are about 30 engineering colleges in the city and only five of them have more than 1500 students in various programmes. Eom

Nandan Nilekani appointed Chief Mentor for India Energy Stack Task Force

As reported by ET earlier, the Ministry of Power confirmed on Saturday the appointment of Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani as the Chief Mentor of a newly formed Task Force to develop the India Energy Stack . The move aims to form a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) designed to standardise and modernise operations across the sector. ET had earlier reported the news on June 18. The initiative has been approved under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), with REC Ltd. as the Programme Nodal Agency and FSR Global as Knowledge Partner, said an official memo. In a major push to digitise India's power sector, India Energy Stack aims to create a unified digital architecture that will enable interoperability and data-driven innovation across generation, transmission, distribution, and consumer services. "A correction of up to 25% in generation, transmission and distribution costs is the desired outcome of this exercise," an official aware of the project had told ET earlier this month. Nilekani, who previously spearheaded the Aadhaar project as Chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), will guide the Task Force in charting a roadmap for the Energy Stack and preparing the scope for a Utility Intelligence Platform to enhance efficiency and transparency. Alongside tech entrepreneur, the Task Force includes several distinguished experts and senior officials: Dr Ram Sewak Sharma, Chairperson, former CEO of the National Health Authority and ex-Chairman of TRAI. Pradeep Kumar Pujari, Vice Chair, Distinguished Fellow at FSR Global and former Chairman, CERC. Pramod Verma, Chief Architect of FIDE and former Chief Architect of Aadhaar. Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority. Alok Kumar, Director General, AIDA. Jitendra Srivastava, CMD, REC. SK Soonee, Founder and former CMD of Grid India. According to the government notificiation, representatives from major DISCOMs, including CMDs of MSEDCL and GUVNL, will also participate in shaping the initiative.
