We began to pay our players who make it to the national camp: Indian Rugby Football Union President Rahul Bose

India Gazette4 days ago

New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Rugby India President Rahul Bose revealed that the Rugby Federation has begun providing financial compensation to Indian players selected for the national camps, as part of broader efforts to support grassroots talent.
Under Bose's leadership, Rugby India launched the inaugural edition of the Rugby Premier League (RPL), India's first-ever franchise-based rugby competition, which began on June 15.
The RPL, touted as the world's first franchise-format rugby league, has six founding franchises in the opening edition. The franchises in the competition are Bengaluru Bravehearts, Chennai Bulls, Delhi Redz, Hyderabad Heroes, Kalinga Black Tigers, and the Mumbai Dreamers.
Speaking to ANI, Rahul Bose said, 'As a federation, we began to pay our players who would make the national camp. I'm taking all ages across the entire country who play the nationals, which is 1600 players. 140 players who make the national camps in under-18 and under-20 boys and girls. So, say about 220 players. We're paying them now. In five weeks of national camp, in the first week, this much money, in the second week this much money, in the third week, this much in the fourth week, this much and in the fifth week this much.'
Further, the 57-year-old actor shared that players representing India are also eligible for bonuses.
'If you play for India, this much, these are the bonuses. Now, a boy or a girl or a man or a woman who plays rugby at the national level is going home with about 40 to 60,000 rupees per camp. I've had people say, because of you, not me, he's talking about the board, the house is on fire. When you're dealing with a sport that is played by the poorest of the poor, you're not just dealing with kabliyat. You're dealing with an entire ecosystem,' he added.
Across the 34 matches, the RPL offers Indian players a great platform to rub shoulders and work alongside the most elite rugby players and coaches worldwide.
The grand finale of Season 1 is scheduled for June 29, promising two weeks of high-octane rugby action as the teams vie for the coveted trophy. (ANI)

HT Image India's seventh consecutive defeat in their disastrous European leg of the FIH Pro League meant that they will finish at the lowest rung of the standings even though one match is left to be played on Sunday. India are now at the bottom of the nine-team standings with 10 points from 15 games and will play again against China on Sunday in their last match of the 2024-25 FIH Pro League. With 0-1 loss to England in the other match of the day, Germany are one rung above India with 13 points. Even if India beat China, they are certain to finish at the bottom as they can only reach up to 12 points. A minute later, India secured two-back-to-back first penalty corners but Deepika failed on both the occasions. Seconds from the first quarter, China secured their second penalty corner but failed to stop the push. A minute into the second quarter, China earned two consecutive penalty corners but failed to make use of the chances. China came out all guns blazing in the second quarter and dominated the proceedings through penalty corners, and in the 21st minute, Chen Yang scored from a set piece. China continued to put pressure on the Indian defence and got their fifth penalty corner in the 26th minute and Zhang Ying made no mistake as they took a 2-0 lead at half-time. The Indians created a few chances but, as has been the case so far, they lacked the finishing touch. They dominated the third quarter with persistent attacks but failed to break the resolute Chinese defence. China took advantage of India's lacklustre attitude in the backline, tripling their lead in the 45th minute through a field goal by Anhul Yu against the run of play. The Indians continued to apply pressure on the Chinese defence and secured a penalty stroke in the 55th minute but Deepika missed the golden chance. The missed penalty stroke summed up India's day as China came out winners. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

India "Definitely Working On" This Area After 1st Test Loss To England, Reveals Prasidh Krishna

India's lower-order batters have left a lot to be desired with their failures in the first Test against England and seamer Prasidh Krishna says they are "putting in the work" at nets to come out better prepared for the second game in Birmingham. India's lower order caved in without a fight in both innings which proved decisive in the final outcome. The visitors lost their last seven wickets for 41 runs in the first innings to be bowled out for 471, and in the second essay, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh -- all fell for ducks -- as India lost their last six wickets for 32 runs. "As the lower-order batsmen, we definitely are working on... If you look at our net sessions, we are putting in the work. "I think it is about putting your mind in there as well, making sure you trust yourself, trust the skill that you have and be there at the crease for a little longer. And then the numbers and the runs are going to show, and we are working towards it," Prasidh said during a press conference. Runs from the lower order and tail will be welcome as India look to restore parity after losing the series opener by five wickets at Headingley. New skipper Shubman Gill's captaincy in his first Test at the helm received mixed reviews from former players. "About Shubman, yeah, I think he did a pretty good job. All of us saw how he rotated the bowlers, made sure everybody had enough breaks, brought in people at the right kind of spells," IPL 'Purple Cap' winner Prasidh said. "He saw opportunities and brought in the right kind of bowlers. All of that was great. And knowing him, he set a very good atmosphere around. He's been speaking to all of us. We always go in with a plan and the communication is happening there," he added. Gill succeeded Rohit Sharma as captain of the Indian Test team after the latter announced his retirement few days before Virat Kohli too decided to bring the curtains down on his illustrious career in the game's traditional format. The second match of the five-Test series begins here at Edgbaston from July 2.

Neeraj Chopra Backs This Indian Cricket Star To Excel In Javelin Throw. Not Virat Kohli Or Hardik Pandya

India's world champion and Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra feels that Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah can excel in his discipline. Neeraj will be in action during the Neeraj Chopra Classic at Bengaluru on July 5. Ahead of the event, he was quoted as saying by to Star Sports, "I think it would be a fast bowler (A good javelin thrower from other sport), for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah, in his prime, will be good at it." Fast bowlers and javelin throwers both require a strong, steady run-up to build momentum. Good speed and timing are extremely important, so are powerful legs, core and shoulders for an explosive finish. Bumrah is currently the top-ranked Test bowler in the world and a massive part of India's pace attack. In the recent Leeds Test against England, he took a five-wicket haul in the first innings and went wicketless while defending 371 runs for the team. On the other hand, Chopra reclaimed his number one spot in men's javelin throw world rankings from Anderson Peters of Grenada following a string of brilliant performances on the international stage. World Athletics updated the rankings earlier this week, increasing Neeraj's points to 1,445 compared to Peters' tally of 1,431, according to Also, Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem sits at number four with 1,370 points to his name. Neeraj lost his top spot to Peters back in September 2024, just shortly after the Paris Olympics, where he attained a silver medal with a throw of 89.45, and Peters took home the bronze. The year 2025 has been incredible for Neeraj, as he kickstarted with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April and followed it up with a very special second-place finish at Doha Diamond League, where he crossed the 90-metre mark for the first time ever with a throw of 90.23 m. He also went on to secure a second spot in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland later that month and resumed his winning ways with back-to-back titles at Paris Diamond League and Ostrava Golden Spike this month, with best efforts of 88.16 m and 85.29 m.
