The concept is simple — gather your favourite books, and instead of paying per individual book, pay by their weight. Over thousands of books are up for grabs, from classics and hardbound collections to children's books and fiction. While children pick up sound books, board books, the encyclopedia, touch & feel books, and educational books, they can also take part in live storytelling sessions. Called Kathai Karnival, the ongoing book fair at Prozone Mall brings together literature, creativity and community spirit, and aims to introduce children to the joys of reading. Besides sessions on creativity, there will also be a meet-and-greet event with their beloved characters from the story books. 'This is a celebration of reading in its most joyful form,' say S Bringston Nathan, who heads marketing of Prozone Mall and is part of the organising team. 'We want children to fall in love with stories — not just on the page, but through performance, play, and imagination.'
The book fair is also a 'Weigh Lit Fest' where bibliophiles can buy one kilogram of books for ₹549 and three kilograms at ₹1300. The aim is to make the purchase of books economical for all those who love to read. 'We want children to leave their digital gadgets, and physically touch and feel the books. In the last three years, the event has reached out to thousands of school students from across the city. This year, more than 2000 students have enrolled for events at Kathai Karnival.'
Books ranging from non-fiction, fiction, reference books, dictionaries, English, and Tamil languages, picture and children's books are neatly organised and kept on tables.
'The festival is tailored to delight young readers and families alike. A space where stories are not only read but also heard, shared, and experienced,' says Nathan adding that a festive atmosphere, candid reader interactions, and storytelling corners, add to the buzz.
There are small-format fiction books like that of Dan Brown and popular ones of Tom King, Jeffery Archer and Agatha Christie. At the fair, the books are not organised by title or author. There is an element of surprise and this can be exciting for any book buyer.
The book fair is on till July 6 at Main Atrium, Prozone Mall. Entry free.

Actors hold power: Simran gets candid at the ninth edition of AbilityFest

The Indian film industry, particularly the Tamil film industry, has come a long way in portraying Persons with Disabilities (PwD) sensitively. For the longest time, the community was relegated to either being mocked at, or sympathised with, or completely overlooked. This is evident in an industry that once found humour in ridiculing the speech-impaired (Thangamaana Raasa) and the hearing-impaired (Chinna Vaathiyar). Since the early 2000s, not only are such 'jokes' widely disapproved of, but we also see positive and respectful representations in movies such as Jyotika's Mozhi and Udhayanidhi Stalin's Psycho. In what has been a result of concerted efforts, the tides are slowly, yet steadily, starting to change for the better. One such effort is the AbilityFest-India International Disability Film Festival — intended to showcase films created by and about PwDs — which is in its ninth edition. This year's theme is '60 Seconds To Fame – All India One Minute Film Competition on Disability'. Select movies picked by a jury comprising AR Rahman, composer, Simran, actor, Madhan Karky, lyricist, Mohammed Shams Aalam Shaikh, international para swimmer, and Tinkesh, life coach and fitness consultant, are to be screened. They have handpicked some of the most moving and motivating films that conveyed a strong message in 60 seconds. All the jury members, along with the festival director Jayshree Raveendran, and actor and festival chairperson Revathy, unequivocally calling to make cinema accessible to all, were present at a press event following the launch of this year's film festival on Wednesday. Simran, whose recent blockbuster Tourist Family is set to be screened at the festival along with audio description, spoke to CE on the sidelines of the event. 'I feel happy about being part of the Ability Foundation. Being a part of this initiative and working selflessly gave me inner peace and satisfaction,' she said.

Karan Johar Said He Doesn't Want To Work With Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise: 'Don't Want Them In My Movies'

Karan Johar said he has 'no interest' in working with Hollywood actors or making an English language film. Karan Johar is among the biggest filmmakers and producers in India. As such, he has no interest in waiting in Hollywood offices to get his scripts read. In a 2012 conversation with TBIP, Karan Johar said he has no intention of working with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise or Will Smith. He said that, unlike Hollywood, Indian cinema has a vast audience even in the domestic sense. Karan Johar said, 'We have such a large domestic audience that we have never needed to reach out. I have no interest in whether my film releases anywhere else in the world but India. The diaspora, for sure… But I don't want to work with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise and Will Smith. I don't want them in my movies." Karan added, 'I don't want to make an English language film. I have no interest in going down and sitting in an office in LA and waiting for an actor to hear my script. I have no interest. If they give me an Oscar in my lifetime, I'll accept it as gladly as I'd accept a National Award from the President. It'd probably mean more to me." The filmmaker said that while he watches the Oscars and enjoys the black-tie event on his television, he will not spend years of his life trying to win it. 'I love the movies I make. I love the world I live in. I love the fact that Hindi cinema is a part of my life. I feel blessed that I'm in this profession," Karan mentioned. He wished that Bollywood never needed to reach out to 'another country" to support its creative endeavours. Although Karan Johar mentioned that he didn't want Will Smith in his films, it is interesting that years later, the actor made a cameo in Student of the Year 2. The film was produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Meanwhile, Karan Johar recently critiqued Brad Pitt's F1. Karan Johar called F1 a fun watch despite being predictable. He wrote on Instagram, 'Familiar Tropes, predictable beats, one-liners you see coming a mile away and yet. SO MUCH FUN! You can't stop yourself from reaching the edge of your seat or gasping out loud (sic). Brad Pitt seems to have approached the role with a self-reflecting Zen mode movie star swag! So effective and landed every beat!" He said that he found the climax a bit weak, and ended by saying, 'Mildly underwhelmed with the climactic beat BUT don't miss this adrenaline race and rush (sic)."
