Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin storm into semis of Japan Open
PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's world No 1 men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani are on track to retain the Japan Open title when they stormed into the semi-finals with a hard-fought win over their Indonesian rivals.
The Malaysian defending champions had to dig deep into their reserves before overcoming Indonesia's world No 5 pair Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri 21-13, 17-21, 22-20 in a match lasting nearly an hour.
This is the first meeting between the two pairs.
In the semi-final, Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will play Taiwan's Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han who ended Malaysian pair Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong's fairytale run at the championships in a hard-fought three-game encounter.

Malaysian referee Nazmi Nasaruddin was earlier among the candidates to referee at the 2026 World Cup, which the US, Canada and Mexico will jointly host. (Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysian referee Nazmi Nasaruddin has been chosen to officiate at the under-20 World Cup 2025, slated to be held in Chile from Sept 27 to Oct 19. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) said Zairul Khalil Tan and Mu'azi Zainal Abidin have also been appointed as assistant referees. 'We want to congratulate the trio and wish them all the best in carrying out their duties at the championship. 'FAM's top leadership also wants to thank Fifa and the Asian Football Confederation for their faith in Malaysian referees. 'We consider it a huge honour and recognition of our efforts to empower the standard of refereeing,' FAM said in a statement today. Nazmi was earlier among the candidates to referee at the 2026 World Cup, which the US, Canada and Mexico will jointly host. He was also the first Malaysian referee to officiate a match in the Asian Champions League, which uses video assistant referee technology.

Pearly-Thinaah move into China Open quarter-finals

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's world No 3 women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah booked a quarter-final berth at the China Open but not before being made to work hard by the 99th ranked Japanese pair Rui Hirokami-Sayaka Hobara. The more experienced Malaysian pair had to bring out their best before winning 21-17, 21-13 in their second round match at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou. Pearly-Thinaah took 38 minutes to overcome the Japanese pair who were only playing together for the fourth time in BWF World Tour championships. The Japanese pair met the Malaysians in the Thailand Open semi-finals for the first time in May and lost in straight games. Pearly-Thinaah will play the winners of the match between Indonesia's Fabriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi and Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto from Japan. No Malaysian women's doubles pair have ever made it to the China Open finals.

Aaron-Wooi Yik sweep past French pair, M'sia assured of spot in semis

(AFP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : National men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik qualified for the quarter-finals of the China Open after an easy win over France's Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov. The world No 2 pair took just 35 minutes to beat the French brothers 21-17, 21-18. This is their second win over the French duo, who are ranked 18 rungs below them, in their two encounters so far. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who were eliminated in the first round of the Japan Open last week, were in fiery form today. Their win also assures Malaysia of a semi-final spot as Aaron-Wooi Yik will play against world No 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the quarter-finals. Wei Chong-Kai Wun took 56 minutes to defeat compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong 17-21, 21-17, 21-19 in another second round match. Three other Malaysian pairs have qualified for the tournament's quarter-finals, namely men's doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah. The China Open is a World Tour Super 1000 event which offers a total cash prize of US$2 million (RM8.4 million).
