Chargers describe Ladd McConkey's record-setting rookie season in 4 words

USA Today3 days ago
The Los Angeles Chargers hit on second-round 2024 NFL draft pick Ladd McConkey. As a rookie, McConkey broke all sorts of team records for Los Angeles.
The former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver became the Los Angeles Chargers' all-time leading rookie receiver in receptions and receiving yards. He finished the 2024 season with a team-best 82 receptions for 1,149 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. McConkey had the 10th-most receiving yards and 19th-most receptions of any NFL player. He helped Los Angeles go 11-6
McConkey's record setting season continued in the playoffs. Los Angeles fell to the Houston Texans in an ugly 32-12 loss, but McConkey set the NFL rookie receiving yardage record (for an individual playoff game) with 197 receiving yards, nine receptions, and one touchdown.
"A damn good one," said the Chargers on social media when describing Ladd McConkey's rookie season. McConkey is already drawing recognition across the NFL. The league ranked him as the No. 100 best player in the NFL for his 2024 season.
McConkey and the Chargers start training camp on July 17. McConkey should have an even better sophomore campaign in the NFL.
The Chargers' regular season opener will be played in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.

Are Lakers buying out LeBron James? Explaining latest viral update on superstar's contract amid trade rumors

LeBron James seems like he'll stay front and center of the NBA's headlines this offseason. His agent Rich Paul's comments after LeBron opted-in to his Los Angeles Lakers contract for 2025-26 made many wonder whether James is seeking a trade. Advertisement There's also been a suggestion of a buyout, but that hasn't gained the same traction. Well, at least until a viral parody account posted on X on July 4 that James and the Lakers are working on a buyout. MORE: A major update in LeBron James' trade talks from Lakers Are Lakers buying out LeBron James? No, the Los Angeles Lakers are not buying out LeBron James. They also aren't working toward a buyout with LeBron. It would be entirely illogical for the Lakers to buy out James. He was a second-team All-NBA choice in 2024-25. Why would they get rid of him for nothing in return? While trades don't appear to be forthcoming, LeBron's name value plus talent give him legitimate trade value if he ends up requesting a deal. Advertisement But for now, it's full speed ahead for LeBron with the Lakers. MORE NBA NEWS:

(AP Photo/Kyusung Gong) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jose Altuve homered twice while reaching base five times and driving in five runs, and the Houston Astros routed the Los Angeles Dodgers 18-1 on Friday night in the series opener of a matchup between division leaders. The defending World Series champion Dodgers were held to five hits and Will Smith's solo homer in the team's worst loss in Dodger Stadium history. Advertisement The AL West-leading Astros scored 10 runs in the sixth, highlighted by Victor Caratini's grand slam and Altuve's three-run shot. It was the most runs given up in an inning by the Dodgers since April 23, 1999, when they allowed 11 to St. Louis. Houston's Lance McCullers Jr. (2-3) allowed one run and four hits in six innings of his second start since returning from a sprained right foot. He struck out four. Isaac Paredes hit his first career leadoff homer on the first pitch of the game from rookie Ben Casparius. Altuve doubled and scored on Walker's RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Jake Meyers doubled beading off the third and scored on Altuve's 14th homer. Rookie Cam Smith doubled and scored on Walker's 417-foot shot halfway up the left-field pavilion to cap four straight hits given up by Casparius and extend Houston's lead to 6-1. Advertisement The Astros broke it open in the sixth. Smith had a bases-loaded RBI single, reliever Noah Davis hit Walker with two strikes to force in a run and Caratin hit his grand slam came with no outs. Meyers added an RBI single and Altuve hit his second homer of the night. Caparius allowed six runs and nine hits in three innings and struck out three. Dodgers fans relentlessly booed Altuve throughout his at-bats, chanting 'Cheater! Cheater!' He's one of two players, along with McCullers, remaining from Houston's 2017 team that beat the Dodgers in the World Series. It later came out that the Astros were stealing signs with the help of video and relaying pitches to batters by banging on a trash can. Key moment Advertisement Ohtani hit a 96-mph line drive off the left heel of McCullers in the third. The ball flew up and was caught by shortstop Mauricio Dubón, with the umpire signaling Ohtani out on the rare 1-6 putout. Key stat Cooper Hummel's pinch-hit single in the fifth snapped a streak of 12 1/3 hitless innings by the Dodgers bullpen. Up next Astros LHP Framber Valdez (9-4, 2.72 ERA) starts Saturday. Dodgers RHP Shohei Ohtani (0-0, 2.25) will throw two innings as the opener on his 31st birthday. ___ AP MLB:

Astros hand Dodgers largest defeat in Dodger Stadium history, with HRs by Jose Altuve and Christian Walker

On the first pitch of Friday's game, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ben Casparius allowed a homer to Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes. It didn't get much better from there for the Dodgers. Powered by a season high-tying five homers (but somehow not the most homers by a team this Fourth of July), the Astros coasted to an 18-1 win in the opener of a high-profile three-game series. The proceedings got bad enough that Dodger fans began chanting "Start the fireworks!" Advertisement It was Los Angeles' largest defeat in Dodger Stadium history. Six different Astros players scored multiple runs, with Jose Altuve leading the charge. The second baseman went 3-for-3 with two homers, a double, two walks, four runs and five RBI. He entered the game without a regular-season home run at Dodger Stadium in his career, then added a pair: That second homer was part of a 10-run inning for the Astros, the first time the Dodgers allowed double-digit runs in an inning since April 23, 1999, the longest such streak in baseball. That was the game in which Fernando Tatis hit two grand slams in a single inning Advertisement The Astros hit a grand slam in this inning too. All of that was at the expense of reliever Noah Davis, who was left to wear it with the game already out of reach. His final line: six hits, 10 earned runs and three walks allowed in a 1 1/3 innings of work. His ERA now sits at 19.50. The only Dodgers pitcher who didn't allow a run was infielder Miguel Rojas who threw a scoreless ninth while down 17 runs. Casparius ended up allowing six earned runs, while Jack Dreyer and Anthony Banda yielded a single run in multiple innings of work. The lone Dodgers run came on a solo homer by All-Star catcher Will Smith. The last time the Dodgers allowed this many runs in an inning, a player hit two grand slams. (Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images) (IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect / Reuters) The other tormentor of the Dodgers was first baseman Christian Walker, who regularly punished the team during his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks. While he's struggling this year, he entered the game slashing .341/.401/.783 at Dodger Stadium Advertisement On Friday, he hit a homer for a sixth straight game at the ballpark, tying the record for the longest streak by a batter on the road against a specific team in MLB history per Sarah Langs. That span includes two multi-homer games. He can go for the outright record on Saturday. Per Langs, the only players with more homers in their first 43 games at a specific venue than his 20 at Chavez Ravine are Mark McGwire, Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez. Dodger fans will at least have a better reason to tune in for Saturday, as Shohei Ohtani will take the mound against Framber Valdez for his fourth start since returning from UCL surgery.
