Gujarat government sanctions new bridge parallel to collapsed structure in Vadodara
Several vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar river after a segment of the 40-year-old bridge near Gambhira village, connecting Anand and Vadodara districts, collapsed on July 9.
The death toll rose to 20 on Friday, while the search for a missing person continues, officials said on Sunday.
The old bridge near Gambhira village was a key link between central Gujarat and Saurashtra.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday granted administrative approval to the Roads and Buildings Department for the construction of a new bridge near Mujpur connecting Vadodara and Anand districts.
The government has set a target to build the new structure in 18 months and the tendering process has been initiated, an official release stated.
A detailed project report was recently prepared by the R&B Department after a survey.
"Following the unfortunate collapse of the existing bridge, which disrupted connectivity between central Gujarat and Saurashtra and posed challenges for local commuters and students, the chief minister swiftly approved this new project," it said.
R&B Department's superintending engineer NV Rathva said the existing two-lane Mujpur approach road will be expanded to four lanes and widened to seven metres.
A 4.2 km stretch from the highway to the bridge will also be expanded to four lanes.
"The chief minister has approved administrative sanction of Rs 212 crore for these works," he said.
Meanwhile, the operation to trace a missing man continued in the Mahisagar river, officials said.
The rescue teams were conducting searches with rubber boats and other necessary equipment, he said, adding the wreckage of the small vehicles was also salvaged.

The Right to Service Commission has imposed a Rs 6,000 penalty each on two Haryana government officials for issuing a birth certificate to a man whose father died and delaying over four months in issuing a marriage certificate to a couple. The penalties will be deducted from the officials' salaries, of which a certain amount will be paid to the complainants as compensation. Rs 6,000 to be deducted from tehsildar's salary Taking serious note of a four-month delay in issuing the marriage certificate, the Commission, invoking Section 17(1)(h) of the Right to Service Act, imposed a symbolic penalty of Rs 1,000 on the tehsildar-cum-marriage registrar of Hansi. The Commission further directed that a compensation of Rs 5,000 would be paid by the tehsildar from his pocket to the complainant. On March 10, a Hisar resident applied for the registration of his wedding that took place on November 28, 2023, with the consent of his and his wife's parents in the delayed marriage registration category. The couple is domiciled in Haryana and has valid Family IDs, confirming their age and addresses. The marriage registrar, however, raised an objection, citing the absence of birth certificates, and allegedly refused to issue the marriage registration certificate. According to the complainant, 'The tehsil office demanded hard copies of birth certificates and additional documents. Despite, as per the Haryana government guidelines, dated July 19, 2024, age and address can also be verified by Family ID. Therefore, no separate documents were required for verification.' 'During the hearing before the Right to Service commission on July 15, the marriage registrar admitted that he relied on the statements of the marriage clerk and did not review the instructions. He acknowledged his mistake, expressed regret and assured the Commission that the certificate would be issued as early as possible. The Commission, however, viewed this as a case of serious negligence. Marriage registration is a service that the government offers with a set timeline of 5 to 7 days, and it should not have been delayed for four months. Had the officer followed the instructions on time, the certificate could have been issued much earlier,' a Commission spokesperson said. 'The Commission has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Hisar to deduct Rs 6,000 from the salary of the Hansi Tehsildar-cum-Marriage Registrar for July, Rs 1,000 of which should be deposited in the state treasury and Rs 5,000 should be transferred to the complainant's bank account. In addition, the Commission has directed CRID to organise training-cum-sensitisation sessions for Marriage Registrars and related officers so that the government's guidelines issued in this regard can be followed by the field offices effectively,' the spokesperson added. A Faridabad resident was issued a birth certificate instead of the death certificate of his father. On March 22, the applicant had applied for the death certificate of his father, who died on March 19. 'However, due to negligence of the official concerned, the applicant was mistakenly issued the birth certificate of a child,' the spokesperson said. 'During the investigation, it was found that the certificate issuance process was handled by a clerk at the NIT Zone-II office of the Municipal Corporation, Faridabad. He uploaded the wrong certificate and closed the application. Considering it a case of serious administrative negligence, the Commission imposed a symbolic fine of Rs 3,000 on the employee under Section 17(1)(h) of the Haryana Right to Service Act, 2014. The Commission also directed that Rs 3,000 be paid as compensation to the applicant. The total amount of Rs. 6,000 will be deducted from the clerk's salary for July 2025 and disbursed as per rules in August. The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Faridabad, has also been directed to ensure compliance with the order and submit a report to the Commission by August 11. The applicant has been asked to send his bank details to both the Commission and the municipal office so that the compensation can be transferred to his account,' the spokesperson added.

General Secretary Randeep Surjewala told reporters " there is not an iota of illegality" in the land deal in question, and demanded to know when buying and selling land had been made illegal. The Enforcement Directorate filed its chargesheet Thursday afternoon. It names Mr Vadra and his company, Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd, and is in reference to the alleged fraudulent purchase of 3.53 acres of land in Gurugram's Sector 83 in February 2008. The federal agency claims fake documents were used to facilitate and complete the purchase, and Mr Vadra then secured a commercial licence thanks to his position of power. On July 16 the agency had attached 43 properties - worth approximately Rs 37.64 crore - belonging to Mr Vadra, Sky Light Hospitality, and others named in the chargesheet. In a brief but forceful statement, Mr Vadra's office called the chargesheet "an extension of the political witch hunt by the present government against him", and said the businessman would nevertheless, as he always had, "continue to extend his fullest cooperation to the authorities". Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has come out in strong support of his brother-in-law Robert Vadra, who faces money laundering charges from the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Taking to X, the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha denounced the ED's chargesheet as a "witch hunt" that has persisted for a decade. "My brother-in-law has been hounded by this government for the last ten years. This latest chargesheet is a continuation of that witch hunt. I stand with Robert, Priyanka and their children as they face yet another onslaught of malicious, politically motivated slander and harassment," Rahul said. "I know that they are all brave enough to withstand any kind of persecution and they will continue to do so with dignity. The truth will eventually prevail," he added. Earlier on Thursday, the central probing agency lodged a chargesheet against Vadra, accusing him of laundering 'proceeds of crime' in a Gurgaon land deal worth over Rs 58 crore. This comes a day after ED attached his properties worth Rs 37 crore Besides Vadra, ED has accused 11 others in its chargesheet against the businessman, husband of MP Priyanka Gandhi. The other accused include Onkareshwar Properties and promoters/directors Satyanand Yajee & K S Virk, sources said. The Rouse Avenue court in Delhi is yet to take cognisance of the ED chargesheet against Robert Vadra. Reacting to the ED chargesheet, Vadra's office said the 'present proceedings are nothing more than an extension of the political witch hunt by the present govt', adding that he would defend and clear his name in court. 'As a law-abiding citizen, Vadra has always and will continue to extend his fullest cooperation to the authorities and he is confident that at the end of it all, he will be cleared of any wrongdoing,' the statement said. ED's money laundering probe is based on an FIR registered by Gurgaon police in 2018, alleging fraudulent transactions in the land deal. The ED on Wednesday attached 43 properties worth over Rs 37 crore associated with Vadra and his entities, including Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd.
