Scientists just discovered a faster, cheaper way to make fuel — and it's unlike anything we've seen before
The team's progress was detailed in a study published by ScienceDaily. The key, per the researchers, is that microwaves can drive chemical reactions in addition to warming yesterday's lasagna.
The research will "pave the way for the development of new materials optimized for microwave-driven chemical processes," professor Hyungyu Jin said in the report, per ScienceDaily.
For hydrogen, it means a cleaner way to produce a fuel that generates no heat-trapping air pollution. It emits only heat and water as a byproduct when used in a fuel cell, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
But most commercial hydrogen in the U.S. is made with a process that uses fossil fuels. Electrolysis is a cleaner option that uses electricity to separate hydrogen from water, ideally using power from renewable sources, per the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The Pohang experts said that energy-hungry temperatures of around 2,732 degrees Fahrenheit are needed for thermochemical methods. Microwaves can cut the heat requirement by 60%. What's more, microwaves create "oxygen vacancies" in the material crucial for splitting hydrogen from water in only minutes, compared to hours with other methods, according to the study summary.
Hydrogen's potential is great, already powering cranes, boats, and garbage trucks. Hydrogen can also be combusted to make energy. Powering a turbine is an example. But burning the gas results in nitrogen oxide emissions, which is a harmful fume, according to environmental watchdog Sierra Club. The Environmental Protection Agency reported that the "high" amounts of the vapor can irritate human lungs.
An ideal model is for hydrogen to be made with a fossil fuel-free process and used in a fuel cell. This scenario would eliminate harmful gases, importantly planet-warming ones linked by NASA to greater risks of severe weather, including wildfires. High fuel cell cost is another challenge reported by the DOE.
As for making the gas, Pohang's team has the temperature requirement for hydrogen production down to around 1,112 degrees thanks to efficient chemical reactions driven by microwaves. The findings were verified through thermodynamic modeling, according to the report.

"Introducing a new mechanism powered by microwaves and overcoming the limitations of existing processes are major achievements," professor Gunsu S. Yun, team lead, said in the summary.
Hydrogen innovations are happening stateside too. A team from the University of Illinois Chicago is developing a way to make the gas using sunlight and biowaste.

UK lab promises air-con revolution without polluting gases
The soft, waxy "solid refrigerant" being investigated in a UK laboratory may not look very exciting, but its unusual properties promise an air-conditioning revolution that could eliminate the need for greenhouse gases. The substance's temperature can vary by more than 50 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) under pressure, and unlike the gases currently used in appliances, it does not leak. "They don't contribute to global warming, but also they are potentially more energy efficient," Xavier Moya, a professor of materials physics at the University of Cambridge, told AFP. Approximately two billion air-conditioner units are in use worldwide, and their number is increasing as the planet warms. Between leaks and energy consumption, the emissions associated with them are also increasing each year, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Moya has been studying the properties of these plastic crystals in his laboratory at the prestigious UK university for 15 years. On his work surface, a large red and grey machine, topped with a cylinder, tests how the temperature of a substance changes under pressure. The aim is to identify the best refrigerants among this class of materials, which are already used by the chemical industry and are relatively easy to obtain, even if the exact composition of the crystals eventually selected remains secret. The phenomenon is invisible to the naked eye, but these crystals are composed of molecules that spin on their own axis. When the substance is squeezed, that movement stops and the energy is dissipated in the form of heat. When released, the substance cools its surroundings in what is known as the "barocaloric effect". - Chilled cans - "We're expecting demand for air conditioning to increase hugely, globally, between now and 2050," Cliff Elwell, a professor of building physics at University College London, told AFP. He believes barocaloric solids have the potential to be as efficient as gas, if not more so. "But whatever we introduce as new technologies always has to hit the basic requirements," which include being compact and quiet enough for use in homes and cars, he said. Alongside his research at Cambridge, Moya founded the startup Barocal in 2019 to turn his research group's discoveries into tangible products. It employs nine people and has its own laboratory, which is currently a modest container in a parking lot. But the startup is attracting interest and in recent years has raised around $4.5 million, notably from the European Innovation Council -- an EU programme involving the UK -- and Breakthrough Energy, an umbrella group of initiatives founded by US billionaire Bill Gates to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It plans to increase its workforce to 25 or 30 this year. The first air-conditioner prototype is the size of a large suitcase and hums quite loudly when a hydraulic circuit increases or decreases the pressure inside the four crystal-filled cylinders. But it works. A small refrigerator is attached to the system, and the cans of soda inside are perfectly chilled. - Cheaper bills - The prototype has "not really been optimised yet for either mass, volume, or even sound", acknowledged Mohsen Elabbadi, a materials engineer at Barocal. But the performance of the units they are working to perfect will eventually be comparable with those running on gas, he promised. While the company is currently focusing on cooling, the technology could also be used to produce heat. Several teams are studying these materials around the world, but the Cambridge team is a pioneer in the field, according to Breakthrough Energy, which estimates that these devices have the potential to reduce emissions by up to 75 percent compared with traditional units. Barocal hopes to launch a first product on the market within three years, according to commercial director Florian Schabus. These will initially be cooling units for "large shopping centres, warehouses, schools" and even "data centres", he said. The company reasons that the ultimate promise of cheaper bills will convince businesses to stump up the higher initial costs. Trump cuts to NOAA, NASA ‘blinding' farmers to risks, scientists warn
The Trump administration's cuts to climate research and federal weather forecasting agencies are 'blinding' the U.S. to oncoming threats to its food supply — and kneecapping efforts to protect it. As Congress debates its own research and forecasting cuts, a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature suggests that fossil fuel-driven climate change poses an existential threat to key parts of the American food supply. Heat waves and drought driven by fossil fuel burning could mean a collapse of Midwestern corn and soy yields later this century, said study co-author Andrew Hultgren of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The region, Hultgren noted, is both one of the world's richest breadbaskets and one of its most endangered. When temperatures routinely exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, he told The Hill, 'It starts to become a question of how tenable it is to keep farming corn.' 'You do start to wonder if the Corn Belt is going to be the Corn Belt in the future,' he said. Proper forecasting and adaptation could cut those crop failures almost in half, the study found. But those corrective measures are under direct attack from President Trump's mass staff reductions at federal agencies concerned with tracking weather and climate — and the freezing of grants to any program or study that mentions climate. The effect on U.S. forecasting will be 'like losing your eyesight: slow and torturous,' said Jonathan Martin, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Wisconsin. Americans who have grown up amid the 'unheralded revolution' of ever-more-precise weather forecasts will find themselves in a world growing blurrier — even as the weather grows ever more volatile, Martin added. Farmers choosing what crops to plant each season are effectively betting on the heat and rain, which determines what will survive to market — a prediction that is both harder and more vital in an era of weather whiplash, where early-season heat waves can ripen crops only for late-season ice storms to kill them. Those seasonal predictions rest on a vast, taxpayer-funded observation system that connects land, air and sea — and which current budget proposals seek to scale back or eliminate. Trump has sought, for example, to end a wide array of NASA programs that monitor changes to the atmosphere, oceans and land; eradicate the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) office that serves as the 'nerve center' of federal climate research; and cut by two-thirds the funding of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Many of those cuts appear to be replicated in the House and Senate budget proposals, which excise billions of federal dollars — and in particular target what Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) called 'climate change and environmental funding at NOAA.' This policy is based on an 'ideological' foundation, said Christopher Sellers, an environmental historian at Stony Brook University. The administration, he said, is convinced that 'climate change isn't that real or alarming, and that climate alarmism — a species of 'wokeism' — is itself the bigger problem.' In addition to Wednesday's Nature study on the oncoming corn crisis, which drew on NASA research, federal agencies have previously funded or provided data to studies that sought to create new tools to help farmers navigate a more uncertain future. That included federally supported studies that modeled future declines in the ability to grow cotton in the Texas High Plains; investigations into how quickly the groundwater that feeds California agriculture can recover after drought; and projections that sought to forecast Midwestern floods a season ahead based on changes in the salt content of the ocean. That last study depends on 'good knowledge of the ocean state a season ahead,' said lead author Laifang Li of Pennsylvania State University — which itself depends on NASA salinity-sensing satellites that are kept calibrated by the NOAA-funded Argo network, a web of 4,000 floating ocean buoys that monitor the salt and temperature of the ocean. Both the satellites and buoys are at risk under the president's budget, threatening weather forecasts for the whole U.S. — and particularly the vital farm country of the Midwest and California. Cuts to primary research and forecasting are exacerbated by cuts to the public-facing documents that make use of them and the farm adaptation programs the federal government funds — or used to. In April, the president canceled the National Climate Assessment, which distilled research like Hultgren's or Li's into actionable insights that federal and local extension agents transmitted to farmers. It also — in defiance of a court order — froze billions in conservation funding that had already been awarded to farmers and ranchers to help prepare their lands to help resist heat, flood and drought. Even if key Earth-monitoring programs survive, they will do so in an environment where staffing is dramatically reduced and where the executive branch is openly hostile to climate research. The Trump administration is aiming to cut NASA's budget by 25 percent, or more than 5,000 people, which adds to cuts earlier this year of 7 percent at NOAA and 10 percent at the NSF. The don't-say-climate campaign goes beyond weather or agriculture. In the last five months, the administration has blocked the Department of Defense from considering the security risks posed by a heating world; kept the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from modeling the northward march of tropical diseases; and yanked back funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency aimed at making flood- and storm-prone communities less prone to disaster. But cuts at NOAA pose an immediate threat because of their impact on agriculture, said John Sokich, former head of congressional affairs at the National Weather Service. With the proposed cuts, 'we're not going to be able to understand what's happening, much less predict what's happening.' In addition to giving farmers insight on what to plant, seasonal forecasting built on the NOAA and NASA networks tells Western dam managers how much water to release downstream. It also warns when low rivers could raise shipping costs. And beyond the seasonal forecasts, federally funded climate data and forecasting forms an essential element in the long-term decisions farmers make about how to use their land, said John Nielsen-Gammon, the Texas state climatologist and a professor at Texas A&M University. Farmers know the climate is changing, Nielsen-Gammon said, 'and they're trying to adapt.' But programs like the now-defunct National Climate Assessment, he said, had been essential to letting them know which changes are 'natural variability, which ones are going to accelerate? Do we need to put in a new irrigation system — or is the water going to run out anyway?' Hultgren told The Hill that he had expected to find that the U.S., like other wealthy countries, offered farmers a relative harbor from global heating. 'I thought, oh, the corn belt farmers are going to be fully protected, right? They can make all the investments they need to make to mitigate these losses.' But the cost of those investments, and the sheer toll of extreme heat pushing ever earlier into the season, meant that 'the people who have the most to lose are going to lose the most.' Hultgren is 'cautiously hopeful,' he said: He thinks that studies like his, which show how 'climate change coming home to roost in these more developed economies like the US,' will help drive action to both slow it and adapt to it. The long backlog to academic research — this study was in the works for nine years — means that such findings will continue to come out throughout Trump's second term. But if proposed cuts go through, the research pipeline that would provide the actionable insights of the 2030s risks getting cut off. 'Nature is pushing back on us,' Hultgren said. This network moves warm water from the tropics northward, where it cools, sinks, and flows back south. It's one of the key drivers of the planet's climate. When the AMOC slows down, it disrupts this flow of heat. Less warm water reaches the North Atlantic, and the surface cools as a result. The researchers found that only climate models including this slowdown could recreate the observed temperature patterns in the Atlantic Warming Hole. To reach this conclusion, scientists analyzed over a century of temperature data, which serve as indirect indicators of the ocean's current strength. They also used dozens of computer models to simulate how different changes would affect ocean temperatures. Only those with a weakened AMOC lined up with the observed cooling trend. Understanding the Atlantic Warming Hole is important because this cold patch influences rainfall and wind patterns across Europe and can disrupt marine ecosystems.
