Providing details of the late-night action to reporters on Wednesday, ADCP Kashi zone T Sarvanan said that, on a tip-off, the Bhelupur and Lanka police cordoned off the Lautubir area and launched a massive checking drive around midnight. In the meantime, leader of the gang—Titli gang, Sachin Rawat (26) of Gadhwaghat Malahiya area, and his accomplice, Sameer Sonkar (19) of Bhagwanpur, passed through the area.
When the police team asked them to stop they tried to escape.
On finding themselves surrounded, the duo opened fire on the police team. When the police retaliated, Rawat suffered bullet injuries in his and was arrested along with Sonkar, said the ADCP. Police have recovered two country-made revolvers and cartridges from their possession. Injured Rawat was admitted to the trauma centre of BHU.
Police had intensified the search for these two after six members of the Titli gang, including a minor, were caught on July 11 in connection with a theft in Durgakund area. Stolen goods worth approximately Rs 7.5 lakh and cash worth Rs 6.50 lakh obtained from selling the looted goods was recovered from the arrested members. A total of 14 cases were lodged against Rawat, while Sonkar was booked in eight. The menace of this gang was faced in many parts of the district in recent months.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Bengaluru police on Monday announced the arrest of a 37-year-old engineer for allegedly defrauding a cybercrime victim who had already lost Rs 1.5 crore with fictitious legal assistance online. The police identified the arrested accused as Chota Ahammed Mubaraq, also known as Tufail, a BE in Electronics and Communication graduate who is originally from Tamil Nadu but was residing in Kothanur, Bengaluru. Seemant Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, said the complaint in the case was filed at the Ramamurthy Nagar police station in February. 'The victim lost Rs 12.5 lakh while seeking legal help online after cybercriminals conned him out of Rs 1.5 crore,' he added. A search for help led the complainant to Quickmoto Legal Service, a fabricated company operated by Tufail, according to the police, who found that the company had no physical address. However, during the investigation, the police located India Legal Service, a call centre in Kasturi Nagar, Bengaluru, where Tufail had allegedly recruited 12 telecallers to contact cybercrime victims. They allegedly used Zoiper-5, a free Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) application, to conceal their location from law enforcement. The operation was designed to target vulnerable individuals already victimised by cybercrimes. 'Tufail has a brother in Dubai who created multiple companies for cybercrime activities. Tufail exploited cybercrime victims by charging bogus service fees and legal charges,' a police officer said. The police said that during raids at the call centre, they seized substantial evidence including 10 hard disks, seven counterfeit company seals, rent agreements, cheque books, documents, a mobile phone, a CPU, 11 Vodafone SIM cards, and an SIP (session initiation protocol) trunk server facilitating VoIP communications. The police said that 29 cases had been registered against the firm across the country over illegal transactions worth crores of rupees. 'The probe is now being expanded to trace and dismantle the larger syndicate,' an investigating officer stated.

Malegaon Blast: Maharashtra Must Challenge Acquittal Verdict, Says Congress MLA Arif Masood
New Delhi: Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh, Arif Masood, urged the Maharashtra government to file an appeal against the acquittal of all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit. Masood emphasized that terrorism has no religion and should not be associated with any faith. He cited the state government's recent decision to challenge the Bombay High Court's acquittal of 12 accused in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case, stating that similar action should be taken in the Malegaon case. "Terrorism has no religion, nor is it related to any Maharashtra government, which has announced that it would file an appeal against the acquittal of the 12 accused in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case by the Bombay High Court, should do the same thing in the Malegaon case too," said Arif Masood. Meanwhile, families of the Malegaon blast victims have expressed their intent to challenge the verdict of the special NIA court, which acquitted all the accused on July 31. Their lawyer, Shahid Nadeem, confirmed that some of the families will independently file appeals. He also criticized the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for not taking action against witnesses who turned hostile during the trial. The Maharashtra government had earlier approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Bombay High Court's acquittal in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case. In the Malegaon investigation, after the NIA took over from the ATS, it dropped charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), citing issues with how the provisions were applied. The 2008 Malegaon blast occurred on September 29 in the Nashik district, killing six people and injuring over 100. In its judgment, the special court not only acquitted all seven accused but also directed the government to pay compensation, Rs 2 lakh to the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 to the injured. The court found insufficient evidence to prove that Pragya Thakur owned the motorcycle allegedly used in the blast, noting that its chassis number had been erased. It also observed that Thakur had renounced worldly possessions two years before the incident.

The Delhi High Court has denied bail to Kapil Wadhawan, former chairman of DHFL, in connection with a Rs 34,615-crore bank loan fraud case. The court cited the seriousness of the allegations, Wadhawan's central role in the conspiracy, the risk of witness tampering, and the magnitude of the funds siphoned off as reasons for the denial. Remove Ads The Delhi High Court Monday rejected a bail petition filed by Kapil Wadhawan , former chairman of the erstwhile Dewan Housing Finance Corp in a Rs 34,615-crore bank loan fraud Ravinder Dudeja said that having regard to the nature and seriousness of the allegations, the gravity of the offence, Wadhwan's 'central role in the conspiracy, the potential adverse impact of his release on the trial and the huge magnitude of the funds siphoned of, this court finds no merit in the present (bail) application.'The court cannot permit the release of a person who is prima facie the mastermind of a deep-rooted financial fraud, especially when the trial is at a nascent stage, the judge said, adding that if released on bail, Wadhwan 'may tamper with the evidence or worse flee from justice. Many of the witnesses in this case are stated to be either ex-employees or associates of DHFL and as such there is a high risk and possibility that the petitioner might try to influence the witnesses.'The judge said that economic offences of such magnitude not only destroy public confidence in the financial system but also eat away the economic foundation of society. 'They require a firm judicial response guided by the rule of law and public interest. The applicant has failed to make out a case for bail. The application is accordingly dismissed,' the order court noted that Wadhawan was 'summoned by ED where he did not appear on pretext of Covid-19, while he was caught with his entire family and entourage during complete lockdown and FIR was registered against him.'Besides, the conduct of Wadhawan during custody has not been beyond reproach, according to the HC. 'The allegations regarding manipulation of valuable assets and transactions carried out during judicial custody are grave and suggest that the applicant continues to exercise significant control and influence,' according to the January 24, the Supreme Court had cancelled the default bail granted to Dheeraj and his brother Kapil Wadhawan on the grounds that the HC and the trial court had 'greatly erred' in granting default bail to to a FIR based on a complaint by Union Bank of India , the Wadhawan brothers and other had allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy to cheat a consortium of 17 banks. The accused persons induced the consortium to sanction loans aggregating to Rs 42,871.42 crore. It was found that the accused persons "siphoned off and misappropriated" a significant portion of these funds by "falsifying" the books of the DHFL and dishonestly defaulted on repayment of the legitimate dues of the said consortium banks, thereby causing a loss of Rs 34,615 crore to the consortium lenders. So far, this is the largest banking loan fraud in India.
