Hamilton hails 'world class' Ferrari performance
SPIELBERG, Austria - Lewis Hamilton hailed a 'world class' performance by Ferrari in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday after Charles Leclerc took second place on the starting grid and he followed up in fourth.
The session equalled Ferrari's best of the season in Monaco, even if Leclerc was still more than half a second slower than McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start third.
"It's a fantastic result. The team have worked really hard back at the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend," seven-times world champion Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season from Mercedes, told Sky Sports television.
"My last lap wasn't perfect. I think if I'd finished it, I would have been second, so there are lots of positives to take out from that session.
"Also, I think it's been the best day operationally, particularly through qualifying. How the team operated. Just timings, the information we're getting in terms of traffic and positioning on track, I think was really the best. It was proper world class."
Ferrari have yet to win a grand prix this season, although Hamilton won a sprint race in China in March, and the pressure has been mounting on team boss Fred Vasseur as their hopes of a first title since 2008 recede.
Hamilton has yet to finish higher than fourth in a regular grand prix for Ferrari and has now gone 12 races without a podium.
The team, runners-up last year, are now third overall and behind McLaren and Mercedes.
"Ultimately we continue to pull together and protect each other and block out all the noise, and just keep our heads down," said Hamilton.
"It's an incredible team. I'm working with Fred, we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place, but step by step. It can't be done in one go.
"We've just got to keep working on it but I'm really happy with the progress we are making." REUTERS

Inter Miami coach Mascherano sees Club World Cup benefits despite PSG defeat
Inter Miami exited the Club World Cup with a 4-0 defeat to Paris St Germain on Sunday, but coach Javier Mascherano believes their experience at the tournament will benefit both his side and Major League Soccer. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT With eight-times Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi in their ranks, Inter Miami reached the knockout stages by securing second place in Group A. However, their decisive defeat by PSG, Messi's former team, highlighted the gap between the MLS and top European clubs. KEY QUOTES Mascherano: "There's a huge lesson to be learned from here. We're going to be reviewing all of this and I think that they go hand in hand now if we are going to be able to take stock of this experience. "I think that this is going to help us when we take this to our National League. It goes without saying that it depends on our own personal intelligence that we have at our disposal as a team to be able to leverage this experience. "PSG is a wonderful team. They have high-calibre players and an amazing head coach, Luis Enrique, who I know personally. I feel that this is a team that will be remembered." The reigning European champions dominated from start to finish and although Jamaica had an equaliser ruled out for offside, Sarina Wiegman's side controlled the match, pushing to settle the game before halftime. Ella Toone opened the scoring, followed by a headed goal from Lucy Bronze, before Toone again scored deep into first-half stoppage time at Leicester's King Power Stadium. The onslaught continued after the interval, with Georgia Stanway adding England's fourth just before the hour mark, followed by Alessia Russo making it five in the 71st minute. With five minutes to go, Aggie Beever-Jones added the sixth before Beth Mead capped the rout with a seventh in the dying moments. "We enjoyed that game today. A lot of goals and a clean sheet. It's nice to send ourselves off to the Euros," Toone told ITV. "We've got a talented squad and we'll step out and give the nation our all." Wiegman said her side had produced a "good performance". "We expected to be in the final third a lot so we wanted to show what we could do," she said. "It was nice to score seven goals though there were times when we played an extra pass. Overall I'm really happy with the performance." England begin their Group D campaign against France on July 5, followed by games against Netherlands and Wales. The tournament runs from July 2-27. "We'll take it game by game. Let's go and get ready for France. I think there is huge potential in this squad," Wiegman said.
