Rockies break longest shutout drought in MLB history by blanking Cardinals
With a 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Rockies posted their first shutout in 220 games on Wednesday, ending the longest shutout streak in MLB's modern era (since 1900). Their last shutout was an 8-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on May 15, 2024.
Per MLB.com, the only longer shutout droughts on record were the 1893-96 Washington Senators (383) and the 1897-99 St. Louis Browns/Perfectos (298), back when baseball was basically a different sport.
The pitchers responsible for the history were starting pitcher Tanner Gordon and relievers Jimmy Herget and Tyler Kinley, who combined to allow five hits total.

'I did not know that,' Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. 'That's a long time — 220 games. I'm glad we shut them out today behind Gordon.'
Obviously, playing half their games at the infamously hitter-friendly Coors Field didn't help the Rockies break the streak.
Gordon was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque the same day after the Rockies placed starting pitcher Gerrman Marquez on the 15-day injured list with right biceps tendinitis. His start, the 12th of his career, was only the fourth time all season a Rockies starter threw six shutout innings or more.
Even though the historic streak is now over, it still reflects what has been a grotesquely bad season for the Rockies. Their record improved to 26-76, which is still by far the worst record in MLB. The next-worst team is the Chicago White Sox at 36-66.
The Rockies are roughly on track to match the losses record the White Sox last year at 41-121, with their current pace working out to an end-of-season 41.3-120.7. They were in much worse territory earlier this season, but have been merely bad since the start of June with a 17-27 record. Their minus-247 run differential still puts them on pace for a minus-392 mark this season, which would surpass the 1932 Boston (minus-345) for the worst of the modern era.
Still, progress is progress when you're a team that had single-digit wins at the end of May. By taking two out of three games against the Cardinals this week and against the Minnesota Twins last weekend, the Rockies posted their first back-to-back series wins all season.

Griner repeatedly outmatched her opponents in the paint as Atlanta built the lead en route to 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. She scored 17 of her 22 points before halftime and finished the night shooting 8 of 13 (61.5%) from the field. The second half was a different story. Collier, who scored 11 points in the first half, took the game over after the break. Minnesota cut its 14-point halftime deficit to 60-54 by the end of the third quarter, and Collier kept the pressure on en route to 32 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks. She one-upped Griner's offensive efficiency with a 14-of-18 (77.8%) effort from the floor, including a jumper that cut Atlanta's lead to 86-89 with 11.1 seconds remaining. But Jordin Canada hit a free throw that pushed Atlanta's lead back to two possessions at 90-86 with 7 seconds remaining, and the Dream ran out of time and chances to complete the comeback. With the win, the Dream cap a six-game road trip with a 3-3 record. They'll return to Atlanta to face the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday in their first home game since July 7. They'll finish the season with a back-loaded slate of home games that features 11 of their last 19 games in Atlanta, including seven of their last nine. The Lynx will have a chance to start a new home-winning streak on Wednesday in a showdown with the Liberty featuring the two best teams in the league. The Liberty might play that game without All-Star Breanna Stewart, who's dealing with a leg injury but will reportedly travel with the team.

Royals and former All-Star pitcher Seth Lugo finalizing contract extension
One of Major League Baseball's top trade candidates is officially off the table. The Kansas City Royals are finalizing a multi-year contract extension with former All-Star right-hander Seth Lugo, per Jeff Passan. Lugo, 35, was set to hit the open market in the offseason and was heavily involved in trade rumors. The big veteran has put together another quality season for the Royals, posting a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 19 starts. Teams that have had interest in Lugo, like the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, will have to shift their attention elsewhere. The 2024 All-Star was dominant last season, going 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 206.2 innings. Kansas City has had a disappointing season thus far, but there is plenty of baseball to be played. Bolton football's Joshua Henderson, 16, dies after complications from heat stroke
Joshua Henderson, a Bolton High School football player who'd been hospitalized since collapsing during a July 7 practice, died on July 26, Memphis Shelby County Schools announced in a statement on July 27. "It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of a beloved Bolton High School (BHS) student, Joshua Henderson," said MSCS. "He was not only an exceptional athlete and dedicated scholar, but also a source of light and joy to all who knew him. His kindness, determination, and positive spirit left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and our entire BHS community." On a GoFundMe page being used to raise money for funeral expenses, Henderson's family wrote that he suffered a severe heat stroke and had been receiving treatment at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. "After bravely fighting for his life in the hospital, Josh transitioned due to complications from organ failure caused by a severe heat stroke," the family wrote. "Josh was only 16 years old, full of life, laughter, and promise. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, extended family, and all who knew him. His sudden loss has left our hearts shattered and our world forever changed." MSCS said that grief counselors and support staff will be available at the school in the coming days for any students in need.
