
U.S. Sees Year-Over-Year Visitor Increase

Data recently released by the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office shows that in April 2025, the total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States was 5,957,985, an increase of 1.3% compared to April 2024. Overseas visitor volume to the U.S. was 3,047,094, an increase of 8% from April 2024. The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Mexico (1,494,051), Canada (1,416,840), the United Kingdom (403,974), Germany (193,226), and France (182,700). The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals for April were the UK (356,958), Germany (169,705), France (166,591), Brazil (136,433), and India (130,964). The top 5 overseas business arrivals for April were the UK (45,753), India (39,400), Japan (23,490), Germany (22,866), and South Korea (17,283). The top 5 overseas student arrivals for April were China (7,613), India (6,171), South Korea (1,976), Brazil (1,501), and the UK (1,263). The total of 8,564,586 U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the U.S. increased 5.9% compared to April 2024. The year-to-date market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 50.5% and overseas was 49.5%. Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,322,925 (38.8% of total departures for April). Canada recorded a year-over-year decrease of 11.1%. Combined, YTD, Mexico (13,763,175) and the Caribbean (4,033,703) accounted for 54.4% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures. Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,744,890 departures. This accounted for 20.4% of all departures in April. Outbound visitation to Europe in April 2025 increased 5.2% compared to April 2024.

Artist slams Manitoba government's 'completely tone deaf' donation request for 'buy local' gift bags
A Winnipeg artist said she's disappointed by the Manitoba government's request for a local small business owner to donate their products for an upcoming "buy local" themed event. In a July 7 email obtained by CBC News, a representative from Manitoba Finance asked a local maker to consider donating some of their products to be included in gift bags for a "buy local"-themed event. CBC News is not identifying the maker because they fear retribution in their professional career. About 30 government representatives from all of Canada's provinces and territories are expected to attend the event, which is a government taxation conference the province plans to host in September, the email said. "Should you choose to donate, we will happily share any additional advertisements with our guests, who in turn will take them back to their provinces and territories," the email reads. The representative's request was made on behalf of the event's host chair, Paul Olafson, who is also an assistant deputy minister for the province's Finance Department. Olafson, in a July 8 email to the business owner who voiced concerns about the request, said he wanted to offer the gift bags as a way to showcase Manitoba "as a terrific and unique experience," and to give local business owners "the opportunity to display their great products." Attendance fees pay for the costs to host the meeting, Olafson said. "Unfortunately, the event budget does not include products we're including in our 'welcome to Manitoba' kits." Meg Greenlay, a ceramic artist in Winnipeg, says the province's initial request and Olafson's response were shared among a group chat of local artists, including her, who found it "disappointing." While being asked for freebies isn't new for small businesses, Greenlay said it's "completely tone deaf" for the province to do so in the current economic climate. Heightened trade tensions between Canada and the United States prompted a "buy local" movement across the country earlier this year. But Greenlay says the province is "weaponizing" that tagline, and that the government needs to find a better way to connect with and promote local businesses. "I don't think that this is the time to be putting together goodie bags for government representatives," she told CBC News on Friday. "Trying to disguise it under the guise of 'buy local' — but at the same time being told that no one will be financially compensated for their time or materials, or for the product themselves — seems almost unbelievable." The province did not make Olafson available for an interview. A statement from the province, which wasn't attributed to any individual, said there was "never any obligation" for the businesses contacted to participate in the donations. "The province has received multiple positive responses from businesses and entrepreneurs that appreciated the opportunity to showcase their work to a potentially new market," the statement emailed Friday said. But Greenlay thinks the province should apologize to the businesses that received the request. "This is profiting off the backs of hard-working businesses and creatives, and using it to make themselves look good and generous during a conference," she said. "No one's being properly compensated or represented in something like a swag bag, and no one ever has been."

There's a Platinum Marriott Bonvoy Status Tier You've Never Heard Of—and It Costs More Than $1 Million
When Boston's newest skyscraper is finally completed later this year, the mixed-use development soaring above South Station will symbolize Marriott International's decades-long effort to diversify its residential portfolio. The 680-foot tower is crowned by 166 luxury Ritz-Carlton residences, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with city and harbor views. Twenty-five years after the opening of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Washington D.C., which was the first branded residential project for Marriott, the company now has 300 similar offerings, either open or in development. These are across 17 brands, including The Ritz-Carlton, W, St. Regis, JW Marriott, and Edition. The variety of options includes full ownership of branded residences, extended-stay furnished apartments, and vacation villas. 'Customers love our brands, and they love this special lifestyle that they can buy into,' says Dana Jacobsohn, chief development officer for U.S. luxury brands and global mixed-use at Marriott International. Approximately 93 percent of Marriott residential owners are already Bonvoy members, the company reports. New homeowners earn Bonvoy status depending on the brand their residence is tied to; Those purchasing a unit in The Ritz-Carlton Residences receive Platinum status. (Prices at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Boston, South Station Tower start at $1.3 million.) But company leaders emphasize that this isn't your standard Bonvoy Platinum status. Residence owners also tap into a new program called Onvia, an owner recognition platform that includes benefits such as preferred rates at Marriott-affiliated hotels worldwide, exclusive perks when booking a voyage on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and access to a variety of exclusive partnerships, events, and activities. Additionally, once owners put down a non-refundable deposit on their future home, they can enjoy the benefits of elevated Bonvoy status for a period of two years. 'Our hope is that with that elevated status you start with, you'll travel and earn a higher status,' Jacobsohn says. 'Once you're a loyal customer, that status typically just comes so easily.' Marriott's residential options are expanding and now include a variety of ways to experience the company's hotel brands. The upcoming W Cleveland, slated for completion in late 2026, will feature Marriott International's first branded apartment rental, with 12-month leases (at minimum). While W will be the first Marriott-affiliated brand to offer rental units, additional brands could follow, adds Jacobsohn. For travelers who prefer not to sign an ownership agreement or a 12-month lease, Marriott has an alternative in store. The Ann Savannah, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, boasting 157 accommodations ranging from studios to four-bedroom lofts, opened earlier this year in Georgia as the first hotel of the new Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy brand. It caters to different types of travelers, from those in town for the weekend to those seeking a much longer stay. And it provides an elevated experience compared to roadside extended-stay hotels. 'People are extending the amount of time they can work out of a place, particularly in the summer,' explains Peggy Roe, executive vice president and chief customer officer at Marriott International. 'So, if they're going to do that, they want more of an apartment-style type of experience.' Another residential-style brand is Marriott Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, offering high-end vacation home rentals that allow guests to accrue or redeem points. The platform recently made a splash by aiming to ensure guests don't have to deal with rain during their stay through a new partnership with WeatherPromise, a service that pays travelers if there is excessive rainfall during their stay. Marriott's foray into residential hospitality also signals the broader evolution and appeal of blended travel, Roe says. 'From a customer standpoint, I think if you erased all the hotels today and you started over, you would probably see everybody [build for longer-term stays] a little bit more,' she explains. And with the rising popularity of bleisure travel and remote work, it looks like Marriott's long-term focus on alternative accommodations is hitting the mark.
