FORMULA ONE cult hero Robert Kubica enjoyed a fairytale race win at the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours.
The 40-year-old took the chequered flag driving the Ferrari number 83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P, also driven by China's Yifei Ye and Britain's Phil Hanson.

Kubica was once considered to be in an elite crop of F1 talent alongside Lewis Hamilton as he took his maiden win at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix.
In 2011 the Pole had agreed to sign for the Ferrari F1 team for the 2012 season before disaster struck as he was involved in a devastating rally crash that almost killed him.
Kubica was left with 42 broken bones, a partially severed wrist and lost three quarters of his blood volume after being trapped in his car for more than an hour before rescue workers managed to free him.
He underwent a seven-hour operation by seven doctors before having two further operations to repair fractures in his leg, shoulder and arm.

As a result he spent months recovering from his injuries and was robbed of the chance to race for the Scuderia in F1.
Kubica returned to motorsport in the World Rally Championship in 2013 and went on to win 14 Stages before he made a stunning return to F1 to drive for Williams.
Initially he started out as the team's reserve driver in 2018 before he was given a full seat in 2019 to partner then F2 champion George Russell.
He then left his role in 2020 after managing just a single point, but did remain as a reserve driver for Alfa Romeo.

In 2023 he was crowned champion of the World Endurance Championship, while he also won two Le Mans series in 2021 and 2024.
However, top spot in the iconic 24-hour race eluded him as he twice finished as a runner-up and was forced to retire from the 2024 edition.

But this year Kubica finally added the iconic motorsport event to his lucrative racing CV in front of a sell-out crowd - which sees around 300,000 fans gather for the showpiece.
Kubica drove a long final stint to achieve the prestigious victory for Ferrari, which is their third year in a row winning the race.
Speaking over his team radio, he said: "It's been a long 24 hours but an enjoyable one - grazie mille, grazie a tutti."
He later said to TNT Sports: "Winning Le Mans is special.
"It's been a demanding week - we made everything possible. We kept our heads down when we had to push, and when not we took care of the tyres.
"I'm happy for myself, my team-mates, AF Corse and Ferrari winning three times in row. A better scenario, we could not have."
Kubica joins two-time Le Mans and two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso as the only drivers to have won an F1 race and Le Mans this century.
He is also the first Polish driver to win the iconic race.
Team-mate Yifei Ye also became the first ever Chinese driver to take an overall win at Le Mans 24 Hours.
Motorsport fans will also have the chance to sink their teeth into the F1 Canadian Grand Prix, where Russell took pole ahead of Max Verstappen.

SPIELBERG, Austria, June 28 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton hailed a 'world class' performance by Ferrari in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday after Charles Leclerc took second place on the starting grid and he followed up in fourth. The session equalled Ferrari's best of the season in Monaco, even if Leclerc was still more than half a second slower than McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start third. "It's a fantastic result. The team have worked really hard back at the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend," seven-times world champion Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season from Mercedes, told Sky Sports television. "My last lap wasn't perfect. I think if I'd finished it, I would have been second, so there are lots of positives to take out from that session. "Also, I think it's been the best day operationally, particularly through qualifying. How the team operated. Just timings, the information we're getting in terms of traffic and positioning on track, I think was really the best. It was proper world class." Ferrari have yet to win a grand prix this season, although Hamilton won a sprint race in China in March, and the pressure has been mounting on team boss Fred Vasseur as their hopes of a first title since 2008 recede. Hamilton has yet to finish higher than fourth in a regular grand prix for Ferrari and has now gone 12 races without a podium. The team, runners-up last year, are now third overall and behind McLaren and Mercedes. "Ultimately we continue to pull together and protect each other and block out all the noise, and just keep our heads down," said Hamilton. "It's an incredible team. I'm working with Fred, we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place, but step by step. It can't be done in one go. "We've just got to keep working on it but I'm really happy with the progress we are making."

Ferrari brought a floor upgrade to the Austrian Grand Prix which Lewis Hamilton wasn't sure would work, but qualifying in Spielberg suggested the Italians have found more pace Lewis Hamilton was delighted with "a fantastic result" as Ferrari's latest upgrades worked a treat in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. Team-mate Charles Leclerc was only beaten by pole-sitter Lando Norris while Hamilton also starred to make it two Ferraris in the top four. It was the 40-year-old's best Grand Prix qualifying result of the year so far and a performance he was delighted with, even if he felt there was more on the table. Hamilton smiled: It's a fantastic result. The team have worked hard to bring us a new floor this weekend. โ "Considering yesterday [in practice] we were a lot further off, six or nine tenths off, it's nice to be much closer and on the second row, which is really fantastic. My last lap wasn't perfect and I think I could have been second, so there's lots of positives to take out of that. โ "We continue to pull together to protect each other and block out all the noise. It's an incredible team and we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place. I'm really really happy with the progress we're making." He was less than one tenth of a second slower than Leclerc and the seven-time F1 champion thinks he's starting to level the playing field. He said: "I'm edging closer in terms of performance of Charles, who's really, really used to the car. He hardly ever changes anything, so that's really positive. "Also, I had more time in the lap. I was nearly three tenths up going into turn six and I had a massive snap going in, and then I came across the line six tenths down. So that would have put me second." But Hamilton refused to say whether he felt he could convert it into a maiden Ferrari podium, having targeted that before this season only to suffer on race day. He smirked: "Every race I've been saying I can't wait to get that first podium, so I'm not going to say that today! I'll just stay quiet and try to do a better job tomorrow." โ Like Hamilton, Leclerc has been critical of Ferrari's car this season but seemed much happier with the upgrades introduced this weekend. He said: "Monaco was the last time we started on the front row and it's been a difficult season overall, but the team have kept pushing and we brought some new parts this weekend which for sure made a difference. "If you look at the gaps, everybody is super close so it's a big thanks to the team. I'm happy with the lap and we know that we normally have a better car during the race than in qualifying so, hopefully, we can put a bit more pressure on the McLarens." "The upgrades definitely helped us today. How much is difficult to know but, when you see how fine the margins were โ apart from Lando โ it definitely helped us to get to the front row. We did a great job and have worked very well this weekend. I'll do everything I can to make the McLarens' lives as tough as possible."

Stella proud of Norris after 'best qualifying of the year'
SPIELBERG, Austria, June 28 (Reuters) - McLaren team boss Andrea Stella said he was proud of Lando Norris's performance after the Briton took a dominant pole position in Austria in what he called his best qualifying of the year. Norris led every phase, going fastest in Friday and Saturday practice, a decisive response to a poor qualifying in Canada and his collision with championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in that race two weeks ago. That incident, which he accepted blame for, left Norris 22 points behind Piastri. "Even in Canada, after reviewing the weekend with Lando and his engineers, we always said the speed was there," Stella told Sky Sports television. "When he had the little contact with the wall in qualifying, he was on track for a pole position. And in the race, he was one of the fastest, if not the fastest car. The speed was always there. We needed to polish the execution. "I'm really proud of Lando today. Not only he scored a pole position, but it's a dominant pole position, a pretty remarkable lap time." Norris was more than half a second faster than his closest rival, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, on the shortest lap of the season. The Briton said the upgraded car felt strong and quick. Qualifying, a strong point last year, has become more of a problem this season, but Norris seemed to have rectified some of the issues. "It was easily my best qualifying of the year from a delivery point of view from every single lap I did. I still made a couple of mistakes here and there, but none that cost me a lap or anything," he said. "I think on deliveries, consistency and of course putting it in when it counts in Q3 (it) was easily the best lap I've done for this whole season, probably even better than Monaco, honestly. "Maybe not as exciting a lap as Monaco, but definitely a better put-together lap than I did there." Norris won from pole in Monaco, with the fastest lap, as he did in the Australian season-opener. "It shows that the feelings I've been requiring, the feelings that I've not been getting as easily, when they are more my way and more where I want them to be, I can put in better performances and have days like today," he said.
