‘Door kick challenge' goes viral—but cops say the TikTok trend could lead to serious injury

Fast Company4 days ago
Ding dong ditching has resurfaced as the 'door kick challenge.' But this time it could lead to criminal charges and potentially deadly consequences.
In Florida this week, five minors were caught on camera participating in the challenge. Instead of simply knocking and running, footage shows one individual approaching a front door, kicking it repeatedly, then firing an airsoft gun before fleeing the scene, according to Fox News.
Earlier this month in DeBary, near Orlando, two teenagers faced felony burglary charges after taking part in the trend. Doorbell footage captured them sneaking up to a house, forcefully kicking the door until the wood splintered, then running away. When questioned by police, one teen reportedly said they were 'just being dumb,' per the Daily Mail.
Similar incidents have been reported in Pennsylvania, Texas, Louisiana, Michigan, and Georgia. Police departments across these states are warning both teens and their parents about the risks involved in the challenge. Not only is it illegal, but it also raises the risk of violent confrontations between residents and those taking part.
Last month, the Fleetwood Police Department in Pennsylvania issued a warning that 'While 'ding dong ditch' has been a hallmark for decades of kids who were looking to have a little mischievous fun, today's youth have taken things to a more serious level by kicking at doors and ultimately causing damage.'
The Fort Worth Police Department in Texas released a similar statement in May. 'It is imperative that individuals partaking in this trend understand that even if no burglary or theft occur, this behavior is illegal and considered vandalism and can lead to criminal charges. More critically, it can be mistaken as an attempted break-in, potentially prompting dangerous or defensive responses from homeowners,' the department wrote.
Hot off the heels of the recent #ChromebookChallenge, police are urging parents 'to speak with their children about the risks and consequences of participating in trends like this,' emphasizing that 'what may seem like a prank can result in very real trouble and/or danger.'

Train derailment that killed 3 in Germany apparently was caused by landslide

BERLIN (AP) — Investigators believe a landslide, brought on by heavy rainfall, likely caused a regional train to derail in southern Germany, killing three people and injuring 41 more. More than 100 people were aboard the Deutsche Bahn train when at least two carriages derailed Sunday evening in a forested area near Riedlingen, about 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich. The train's driver, another employee and a passenger were killed, police said early Monday. Some of the 41 injured were seriously hurt. Police said the downpours in the area caused a sewage shaft to overflow, likely triggering the landslide of an embankment where the derailment occurred. There was no evidence of an external influence that could have caused the derailment, police said.

A woman has gone missing and police are concerned for her welfare

An appeal has been launched for help to track down a young woman who has gone missing. Police are looking to locate Sherine Dunn, stating there is concern for her welfare. Officers have released a description of the 22-year-old in the hopes of triggering the memory of anyone who may have seen her. They have encouraged anyone who knows of her whereabouts, or has any information to share which may be helpful to the search, to come forward and share it with police. A statement from South Wales Police reads as follows: "Sherine Dunn 22, from Swansea is missing and there is concern for her welfare. "Sherine is from the city centre but has links to Townhill, St Thomas and Bonymaen. "She is described as 5ft 2 inches tall, slim, with long hair, and has tattoos on her neck." Police ask anyone with information contacts them using the reference number 2500219822 via its live chat platform, by filling in an online form or calling 101. South Wales Police says it receives, on average, more than 8,000 missing persons reports every year. It says a missing person is defined as someone whose whereabouts cannot be established, and that they will be considered missing until they care located and their wellbeing or otherwise is established. Its website reads: "Often the missing person themselves does not consider themselves 'missing', however until they are sighted safe and well by police as a result of the concerns raised for them, they will be classed as a missing person. "While we appreciate our communities' concerns when a person goes missing, and the genuine offers of help and support, we kindly ask that the public don't conduct their own searches. "We ask this for a number of reasons; our searches are coordinated by highly-trained, well-equipped search experts who take an intelligence-led, methodical approach which everyone involved understands and follows."
