Old tea godown threatens Fort Kochi boat jetty; SWTD seeks its demolition
KOCHI: An old godown building, in dilapidated condition, is threatening the Fort Kochi customs boat jetty, which is relied on by hundreds of commuters and tourists. In fact, a portion of the large building has already caved in, damaging the ceiling of the walkway of the boat jetty, which was reopened to the public just a couple of months ago following a `80-lakh renovation.
The 'Imperial' building, owned by a Willingdon Island-based export company engaged in tea packaging, used to exhibit artwork during the Kochi Biennale. But now, it's mostly employed as a godown. Constructed using stones and mud bricks, it has the height of a two-storey building.
With the structure threatening to cave in at any time, the state water transport department (SWTD) and the Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) has written to Kochi corporation, demanding that the building be demolished.
'A portion of the building caved in last week, damaging the roof of the jetty, which was aesthetically renovated using a false ceiling and illuminating lights. We suffered a damage of Rs 20,000. We've also taken up the issue with the Disaster Management Authority,' a senior SWTD official said.
The portion of the walkway facing the godown building is restricted for commuters to ensure their safety. As a result, the walkway connecting the jetty with the road remains crowded during rush hour. Meanwhile, ward councillor and health standing committee chairperson T K Ashraf has also filed a complaint, demanding the immediate demolition of the 'dangerous' building, following which the corporation assistant executive engineer served a notice to the owner, A V Agencies. The notice threatened action under the Kerala Municipality Act if the owner fails to act.
'Firm to bear expense'
Meanwhile, Kalvatty ward member Ashraf said he held talks with representatives of the company, which owns the building, and the latter agreed to demolish the portion posing a danger to the boat jetty.
'The company agreed to bear the expense for levelling the section, which will probably start tomorrow itself. Demolition experts visited the site today. A fire force team also examined the building and agreed to assist the process. The continuous rain has worsened the situation. We've initiated action on a war footing,' he told TNIE.
'A portion caved in last week, and no measure has been taken yet to ensure the safety of commuters. We demand that authorities demolish the building at the earliest,' said M M Abbas, president of the West Kochi Passengers Association.

Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnudeo Sai announced the development of a Rs 100-crore education city in Bilaspur, aimed at transforming the city into a modern educational hub. Spread over 13 acres, the project will feature a Nalanda Parishar, coaching infrastructure for 4,800 students, hostels for 1,000 students, a 700-seat auditorium, and sports and green facilities. With over 50,000 students already studying in Bilaspur, the initiative is set to boost academic opportunities and holistic development, reinforcing the govt's commitment to quality education, officials said. Three multi-storey buildings will be constructed, providing 48 hall setups (each with one hall, two rooms, and a toilet), accommodating 4,800 students for coaching classes at once. To foster students' academic and personality development, a modern auditorium with a seating capacity of 700 will be built. Furthermore, hostel facilities for approximately 1,000 outstation students will be provided. The Education City will also include an astro-turf sports field and beautiful gardens to promote sports and health. A multi-level parking facility will also be available to ensure convenience for commuters. The Bilaspur municipal corporation has already prepared its construction plan. Construction will begin soon, setting a new benchmark in education for Chhattisgarh. The city is home to the SECL headquarters and the Railway DRM office, giving it a unique identity not just in Chhattisgarh but across India. It hosts a central university, two other universities, eight colleges, and over 100 coaching institutes that prepare students for prestigious examinations like the Public Service Commission, Vyapam, and IIT. More than 50,000 students from across the state are currently studying in Bilaspur. "The construction of Bilaspur Education City is a historic step in this direction. It will not only establish Bilaspur as Chhattisgarh's educational hub but also provide thousands of young people across the state with access to high-quality facilities for studies and competitive exam preparation," he added. Manjeera barrage to be modernised at a cost of Rs 600 crore
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has initiated plans to modernise the Manjeera drinking water infrastructure with a substantial investment of Rs 600 crore. Additionally, the board allocated Rs 3.52 crore for repair works that require immediate attention. Following an inspection of the Manjeera barrage facilities with senior water board officials, HMWSSB managing director Ashok Reddy confirmed the structural integrity of the barrage, dismissing reports of cracked pillars. He verified that the gates and ropes were functioning properly. However, he noted damage to the barrage's apron and immediately directed the responsible agency to undertake urgent repairs. During the inspection of various barrage components, the MD instructed officials to maintain regular greasing, painting, and lighting schedules. He directed the installation of protective fencing along the spillway and ordered the clearance of vegetation from the dam within seven days. Officials determined that gates, ropes, and bearings needed replacement. In May last year, they finalised proposals worth Rs 3.52 crore, completed the tender process, and appointed an agency. While gate tightening is complete, other works continue. The State Dam Safety Authority submitted their assessment recently. The gate replacement is expected to take 45 days, necessitating the release of the reservoir's water below MDL,' said Ashok Reddy.

Efforts on to revive Tulu and Konkani in coastal schools
Mangaluru: Tulu and Konkani, widely spoken in the coastal districts, were introduced as third-language options in select schools. However, over the years, student interest in learning these regional languages has gradually declined. In response, the Konkani and Tulu sahitya academies are trying to revive this interest. The govt introduced Konkani as an optional third language between classes VI and X from the academic year 2007-2008. It was able to attract good number of students from undivided Dakshina Kannada, but currently, there is no school teaching the language through the academy. One of the reasons for the decline in interest in Konkani is the ongoing issue over which script to adopt, Kannada or Devanagari. Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy chairman J Stany Alvares said that efforts are on to reintroduce Konkani in schools again, which previously had good takers for the language. Currently, less than five schools teach Konkani in the Devanagari script, and it is not connected to the academy. "We are planning to reintroduce it from the next academic year. Tulu was introduced as a third optional subject in the academic year 2010-11. The number of schools teaching the language increased to 45 until 2019, but dropped due to issues in the payment of remuneration. "Teachers teaching Tulu in schools across undivided Dakshina Kannada were paid Rs 30,000 per year as an honorarium. There were no separate funds from the govt, but it was paid from the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy fund. However, the teachers did not get paid from 2019, and it forced schools to stop. The number of schools currently teaching Tulu has reduced to 27," said Tharanath Gatti Kapikad, chairman of the academy. Kapikad said that they are trying to clear dues of teachers. They are further writing letters to school heads and also meeting them in person, urging them to include Tulu. "There is also a proposal to include Tulu teachers as guest teachers in the school. We have spoken to the state government in this regard, and if all goes well, it is likely to happen next academic year," said Kapikad. The academy also gave away cash prizes to those candidates who scored 100 marks in Tulu in the SSLC exam.
