Hollywood actor Richard Gere joined the celebrations in Dharamshala and the adjacent Kangra areas of Himachal Pradesh this week in honour of the 14th Dalai Lama's 90th birthday. Richard Gere attended an event at the Nechung Monastery. Speaking to ANI at the event, he said, 'We're here in Dharamshala to celebrate His Holiness's 90th birthday, his good health, his strength and compassion. Nechung is one of my oldest friends… This monastery is very important to me and my son. He's been to my home in the US. He's also very close to my son, and it's always a delight being here. I've seen the pleasure of being here many times, so I feel like I have a connection with Nechung now. It's always a delight being here."

Reportedly, in a crucial ritual held at the Nechung Monastery, the Nechung Oracle, one of the Tibetan community's protector deities, blessed the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and its leadership. CTA President Penpa Tsering, ministers, lawmakers and many Tibetan devotees attended the event. Moreover, on June 30, the Dalai Lama made a brief public appearance at Tsuglagkhang, Dharamshala's primary Tibetan temple, to reaffirm his commitment to peace, compassion, and service to the Tibetan people and the world community.

From July 2 to 4, Dharamshala will hold a three-day international Buddhist conference featuring senior monks and scholars from diverse global traditions. The gathering will conclude in a significant talk by the Dalai Lama, during which he is scheduled to speak on the future of the Tibetan reincarnation tradition, a matter of tremendous interest within the global Tibetan and Buddhist communities. In addition, the International Buddhist Confederation will hold a special remembrance ceremony on July 13 in New Delhi.
Richard Gere was last seen in the film Longing in 2024 and was also part of the series The Agency.
