Sarawak takeover of MASwings set to realise tourism potential, says Abdul Karim
The state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said AirBorneo reflected Sarawak's ambition to improve connectivity and strengthen its ambition to be a leading destination for regional and international travellers.
"For too long, air connectivity has been a limiting factor in fully realising Sarawak's tourism potential," he said in an email interview.
"With AirBorneo, we are changing that narrative. By transitioning from MASwings into a state-owned, full-service carrier, we are addressing long-standing connectivity gaps, particularly in underserved rural areas.
"This allows us to open up the hidden gems of Sarawak, from the heart of the Bornean rainforest to the coastal charm of our lesser-known towns, offering visitors authentic experiences that go far beyond urban centres."
It was previously reported that the acquisition of MASwings was expected to be completed by Dec 31 when its ownership will be fully transferred to AirBorneo Holdings Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the state government
The state government signed a sale and purchase agreement with MASwings' parent company Malaysia Aviation Group on Feb 12.
Abdul Karim said AirBorneo will initially focus on rural air services within Sarawak and Sabah, with a long-term vision of regional and global connectivity.
He said this vision will be achieved through code-sharing agreements with Malaysia Airlines and other major international carriers, connecting Sarawak to Asean and Middle East hubs and eventually to long-haul markets like Germany, South Korea, Japan and beyond.
"This connectivity will not only support tourism but drive investment, trade and talent exchange," he said.
Abdul Karim also said Sarawak was actively exploring new international routes and greater flight frequencies.
"At Routes Asia 2025 in Perth, for example, our delegation engaged with global aviation stakeholders to promote Sarawak's tourism offerings and build new air service opportunities," he said.
He added that these efforts were complemented by Sarawak's plans to build a new international airport in Kuching, which would position the state capital as a regional aviation hub.
"In short, AirBorneo is a cornerstone of our integrated tourism strategy. It brings together infrastructure, service excellence, rural empowerment and international expansion," he said.

Kota Kinabalu: The Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) emerged victorious, edging out their rivals narrowly on points in this year's Friendship Golf Tournament held at Sutera Harbour Golf Resort for the Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam Challenge Trophy. The trophy was last held by the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), who won it in Sarawak. Kaamatan, Gawai Festivals bolster Bornean unity - Hajiji
Joachim (fourth left) received a token of appreciation from Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Ladislaus Maluda. PENAMPANG (June 29): The Kaamatan and Gawai festivals are not mere celebrations of gratitude because they also serve as a platform to enhance the cultural bond between the people of Sabah and Sarawak, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said that the close ties between the two states must be preserved, as they constitute the core of unity and harmony among the multiracial communities in East Malaysia. 'Sabah and Sarawak not only share borders but also a Bornean identity steeped in culture, customs, and traditions. We must enhance this bond for our progress and well-being,' he said in a speech at the Kaamatan-Gawai 2025 gala dinner here on Saturday night. The speech was delivered on his behalf by Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who also serves as the Sabah Minister of Local Government and Housing. Hajiji said the state government welcomes close cooperation with the Sarawak government across various sectors, including the economy, education, investment, and cultural exchange, particularly involving the participation of the younger generation. He also emphasised that unity and tolerance among different races and religions are key strengths of the nation, qualities that are increasingly rare in many other countries today. 'Racial unity must be reinforced so that future generations understand that Malaysia is a nation for all its people, regardless of background,' he added.

Labuan-KK airfare soars to RM1,207, surpassing flights to Seoul, Bangkok
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. LABUAN: Residents and frequent travellers from this duty-free island are voicing growing frustration over skyrocketing airfares for the short Labuan–Kota Kinabalu route, with prices now outpacing even international flights to destinations such as Bangkok and Seoul. For many in Labuan, air travel is not a luxury but a necessity, yet tickets for the roughly 35-minute domestic flight are being sold at rates as high as RM1,207 for a one-way trip on July 2. By comparison, longer international flights from Kota Kinabalu to Bangkok, which take about three hours, start at RM411, while flights to Seoul, a journey of over five hours, are priced from RM661. David Lee, 49, who frequently travels between the two locations for oil and gas business, told Bernama the fares were 'absurd' and 'unacceptable'. 'I was planning my usual trip to Kota Kinabalu for a meeting and was shocked to see fares exceeding RM1,200. How can a flight under one hour cost more than an international trip to Korea?' he said. Another traveller, Nurul Shafiqah Abdullah, 34, a government officer based in Labuan, said such fare hikes were putting a strain on those who rely on the route for essential reasons. 'This isn't a holiday route. It's a lifeline for many who depend on travelling for medical check-ups, work commitments or family matters. These prices are pushing people to the edge,' she said. For Raymond Chong, 41, who runs a logistics company, the limited choice of carriers only adds to the frustration. 'It's either MasWings or Malaysia Airlines, sometimes small planes, sometimes a Boeing. There's no real competition, so you either pay or don't go,' he said. Local entrepreneur Faridah Musa, 45, urged the federal government and aviation authorities to address the pricing mechanism, calling the issue more than just a travel inconvenience. 'We are an island with no road access. Flights are essential, not optional. At this point, it's not just an inconvenience, it's an economic disadvantage for us.' She said calls are mounting for transparency in fare structures and for greater efforts to introduce more airline competition to ensure affordable travel for the people of Labuan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
