Neither case reached trial. The Supreme Court significantly narrowed the election interference case in a ruling that said former presidents were immune from prosecution for official acts, and a Trump-appointed judge dismissed the classified documents case by holding that Smith's appointment as special counsel was illegal.
Smith ultimately withdrew both cases in November 2024 after Trump's victory, citing a Justice Department legal opinion that protects sitting presidents from federal prosecution.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has activated its poll machinery across states for a possible roll out of pan-India special intensive revision (SIR) next month, just like the one being carried out in Bihar. The move comes after the Supreme Court last week called the SIR a 'constitutional mandate' and permitted the poll panel to continue with the exercise in Bihar. Some of the State Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) have started putting out the voters' list published after the last SIR held in their states. The website of Delhi CEO has the 2008 voters' list when the last intensive revision took place in the national capital. In Uttarakhand, the last SIR took place in 2006 and that year's electoral roll is now on the state CEO website. The last SIR in states will serve as cut-off dates, as the 2003 voters' list of Bihar is being used by the ECI for intensive revision. Most of the states carried out the revision of electoral rolls between 2002 and 2004. "An almost existential difficulty faced by LGBTQIA persons is access to goods, financial services and access to public infrastructure," the ex-top court judge added. He said the future of queer rights required action in the realm of the legislature and the executive, with a coordinated effort across various ministries and departments. "There is also, a degree of legislative inertia on the rights and entitlements of queer persons, which risks prolonging the legal limbo for same-sex couples seeking marriage, adoption, or inheritance rights. A conservative attitude still persists across a large populace of the country, which hinders acceptance," said Justice (retd) Kaul. He said that the country was on a path of progressive recognition of the rights of LGBTQIA+ persons and that urban areas and younger generations showed greater openness, even while the rural and conservative communities remained hostile. "I truly believe that the future is more promising than what is behind us, and in the words of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, 'Hope will never be silent," said Justice (retd) Kaul.
