DOJ said to fire more prosecutors, staff involved in Trump prosecutions

Business Standard10 hours ago
The Justice Department has fired additional lawyers and support staff who worked on special counsel Jack Smith's prosecutions of President Donald Trump, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The overall number of terminations was not immediately clear but they cut across both the classified documents and election interference prosecutions brought by Smith, and included a handful of prosecutors who were detailed to the probe as well as Justice Department support staff and other non-lawyer personnel who aided them, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel moves that have not been publicly announced.
The firings are part of a broader wave of terminations that have roiled the department for months and that have targeted staff who worked on cases involving Trump and his supporters. In January, the Justice Department said that it had fired more than a dozen prosecutors who worked on prosecutions of Trump, and last month fired at least three prosecutors involved in US Capitol riot criminal cases, Smith's team in 2023 brought separate indictments accusing Trump of hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida as well as conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the run-up to the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol.
Neither case reached trial. The Supreme Court significantly narrowed the election interference case in a ruling that said former presidents were immune from prosecution for official acts, and a Trump-appointed judge dismissed the classified documents case by holding that Smith's appointment as special counsel was illegal.
Smith ultimately withdrew both cases in November 2024 after Trump's victory, citing a Justice Department legal opinion that protects sitting presidents from federal prosecution.

Good news for Israel as THIS European country decides to purchase Iron Dome air defence system, not Germany, France or Italy, name is...

Iron Dome missile shield New Delhi: In a significant development amid the intensifying Russia-Ukraine war, a big European country has decided to acquire the much-talked about Iron Dome air defence system of Israel. For those unversed, the Iron Dome air defence system of Israel is a mobile all-weather air defense system designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells. In the recent development, the southeastern European country named Romania has decided to purchase the famous air defence system. As part of a broader strategy to enhance national security, Romanian Defence Minister Ionuț Moșteanu has confirmed that the contract for the SHORAD-VSHORAD system is scheduled to be signed in the autumn of 2025, a report by Defence Industry Europe said. Why is Romania buying Iron Dome air defence system? 'These are defensive missile batteries that we don't have, and we need them. If I were to give an example, when we see images from Tel Aviv when the Iranians attack and we see the Iron Dome, that is SHORAD-VSHORAD, and it protects Tel Aviv. It will protect us as well. Whether it's airports, military bases, or, God forbid, we need to defend our cities', the Bulgarian minister was quoted as saying by the report. Speaking to public broadcaster TVR, Moșteanu, the Bulgarian Minister had said that the military procurement currently accounts for nearly 30% of the national defence budget of Bulgaria and Future purchases, including short-range missiles and corvettes will also be made. Bad news for Turkey? 'There is no Black Sea strategy without Turkey. It is the strongest. We will have to take these steps, these discussions, and it will be in the national defence strategy, there will be a Black Sea strategy,' the minister added. Election Commission of India activates field machinery for possible pan-India voter list revision from next month

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has activated its poll machinery across states for a possible roll out of pan-India special intensive revision (SIR) next month, just like the one being carried out in Bihar. The move comes after the Supreme Court last week called the SIR a 'constitutional mandate' and permitted the poll panel to continue with the exercise in Bihar. Also Read: Careful curation | On Bihar's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls Several opposition parties and others had moved the top court challenging the intensive revision, saying it will deprive eligible citizens of their right to vote. Some of the State Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) have started putting out the voters' list published after the last SIR held in their states. The website of Delhi CEO has the 2008 voters' list when the last intensive revision took place in the national capital. In Uttarakhand, the last SIR took place in 2006 and that year's electoral roll is now on the state CEO website. The last SIR in states will serve as cut-off dates, as the 2003 voters' list of Bihar is being used by the ECI for intensive revision. Most of the states carried out the revision of electoral rolls between 2002 and 2004. Also Read: Bihar Special Intensive Revision: The struggle to be counted The poll authority will take a final call on the nationwide exercise after July 28, when the Bihar SIR case will come up again for hearing in the top court, an official suggested. The ECI announced that it will eventually carry out an intensive review of electoral rolls across India to remove foreign illegal migrants by checking their place of birth. Bihar is going to the polls this year, while Assembly polls in these five other states – Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal – are scheduled in 2026. The move assumes significance in the wake of a crackdown in various states on illegal foreign migrants, including from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Judiciary must perform role of catalyst for LGBTQIA+ rights: Former SC judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul

Former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd) Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that the judiciary must perform the role of a catalyst for the rights of LGBTQIA+ persons. He was speaking on Saturday at the launch event of a policy document on recommendations for queer inclusion in India's legal and social landscape, organised by Keshav Suri Foundation and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy. "The judiciary must perform the role of a catalyst. India's legislative landscape for LGBTQIA+ recognition has evolved, but significant gaps persist. The term queer is not defined in Indian law, and asexual individuals are invisible in policy frameworks," Justice (retd) Kaul said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo During his keynote address, the former apex court judge also referred to the tennis player Radhika Yadav's murder case. "The challenge that we face in our country, and actually across the world, I think, (about discrimination). See a thing as simple as a man-woman relationship, where a woman chooses on her own -- forget the cities, look at how it dealt with at different levels, inter-caste marriages; people let loose the process which destroy the lives of their children -- the recent episode two days ago where a father shoots her own daughter -- when we talk of problems; please look at the society all around; this also has to change," Justice (retd) Kaul said. Live Events He said that in February this year, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment introduced certain administrative measures for queer couples, including access to ration cards, joint bank accounts, and the right to claim a partner's body in case of death (if no next of kin existed). "These measures, prompted by the Supreme Court's (earlier) judgment, are a step forward but remain limited, as they are not enshrined in statute and do not address comprehensive rights," he said. Justice (retd) Kaul said that anti-discrimination law was more crucial in today's age, where access to capital was the requisite for access to capital. "Starting a business, buying a house or even otherwise bridging personal needs is wholly dependent on factors such as ease of availing loans or finances, opening bank accounts. Undoubtedly, there are barriers to access for LGBTQIA+ persons to even something as routine as opening a bank account, which requires one to carry a document which conforms to gender identity," he said. "An almost existential difficulty faced by LGBTQIA persons is access to goods, financial services and access to public infrastructure," the ex-top court judge added. He said the future of queer rights required action in the realm of the legislature and the executive, with a coordinated effort across various ministries and departments. "There is also, a degree of legislative inertia on the rights and entitlements of queer persons, which risks prolonging the legal limbo for same-sex couples seeking marriage, adoption, or inheritance rights. A conservative attitude still persists across a large populace of the country, which hinders acceptance," said Justice (retd) Kaul. He said that the country was on a path of progressive recognition of the rights of LGBTQIA+ persons and that urban areas and younger generations showed greater openness, even while the rural and conservative communities remained hostile. "I truly believe that the future is more promising than what is behind us, and in the words of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, 'Hope will never be silent," said Justice (retd) Kaul.
