Rights Groups Condemn Trump for Using ‘Palestinian' as a Slur Against Schumer

New York Times13-03-2025
Jewish and Muslim groups condemned President Trump for calling Senator Chuck Schumer 'a Palestinian,' saying that the president used the term as a racial slur.
Mr. Trump made the comments on Wednesday at a meeting in the Oval Office with Micheál Martin, the prime minister of Ireland. A reporter asked Mr. Trump about tax cuts, and Mr. Trump responded by criticizing Democrats and then focused on Mr. Schumer, the minority leader and the highest-ranking elected Jewish official in the United States.
'Schumer is a Palestinian, as far as I'm concerned. He's become a Palestinian,' Mr. Trump said. 'He used to be Jewish. He's not Jewish anymore. He's a Palestinian.'
Nihad Awad, the national executive director of CAIR, the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the United States, said in a statement that Mr. Trump's use of the term 'Palestinian' as a racial slur was offensive and 'beneath the dignity of his office.' He added that Mr. Trump's comments contributed to the 'dehumanization of the Palestinian people.'
The Anti-Defamation League, an organization that fights antisemitism, said that using 'Palestinian' as a slur and deciding who is and is not Jewish was unacceptable. 'Instead of weaponizing people's identity, use the power of the bully pulpit to bring the American people together,' the group said in a statement.
Halie Soifer, chief executive of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, said Mr. Trump's comments were 'abhorrent' and showed why many Jewish voters did not support Mr. Trump. 'His rhetoric, agenda, and alignment with right-wing extremists are endangering American Jews,' she wrote on social media.
Mr. Trump's comments came after Senate Democrats said on Wednesday that they would not back a Republican bill to fund the government through the end of September, raising the chances of a government shutdown at the end of the week.
Mr. Schumer's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump's AI Action Plan Is a Crusade Against ‘Bias'—and Regulation

Jul 23, 2025 10:52 AM The Trump administration's new AI policy blueprint calls for limited regulation and lots of leeway for Big Tech to grow even bigger. Photo-Illustration:On Wednesday, the Trump Administration unveiled its new artificial intelligence action plan geared at keeping US efforts competitive with China. With over 90 policies recommended, it's a wide-ranging document that, if followed, would give Silicon Valley's most powerful companies even more leeway to grow. 'We believe we're in an AI race,' White House AI czar David Sacks said on a call ahead of the action plan's release. 'We want the United States to win that race.' The Office of Science and Technology Policy drafted the plan, which focuses on three key 'pillars' for AI strategy: accelerating AI innovation, building infrastructure, and leading international diplomacy and security. The report opens by stressing that 'AI is far too important to smother in bureaucracy at this early stage, whether at the state or Federal level.' It recommends a series of policies designed to loosen regulations and burdens on the tech companies developing artificial intelligence products, like encouraging the Federal Communications Commission to 'evaluate whether state AI regulations interfere with the agency's ability to carry out its obligations and authorities under the Communications Act of 1934.' 'We need to build and maintain vast AI infrastructure and the energy to power it. To do that, we will continue to reject radical climate dogma and bureaucratic red tape, as the Administration has done since Inauguration Day,' the report reads. 'Simply put, we need to 'Build, Baby, Build!'' In addition to releasing this report, President Donald Trump is expected to sign several executive orders later this afternoon that are expected to map onto the priorities outlined in the action plan. AI has been a priority for the past two US administrations, but Trump's second term has been characterized by major calibrations as the sector has exploded in prominence. In October 2023, the Biden Administration introduced an AI Executive Order designed to address numerous risks posed by rapidly advancing AI models. The order focused on issues like the potential for AI models to be used as cybersecurity weapons or to help produce chemical or biological weapons, as well as algorithmic bias. This new action plan explicitly seeks to undo efforts undertaken during the Biden Administration, like reviewing all of the Federal Trade Commission investigations it commenced 'to ensure that they do not advance theories of liability that unduly burden AI innovation.' The plan builds on the Trump Administration's previous approach to AI. Shortly after Trump took office, Vice President JD Vance gave a speech at a major AI meeting in Paris where he laid out the new administration's priorities. 'We believe that excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative industry just as it's taking off, and we'll make every effort to encourage pro-growth AI policies,' Vance said, adding, 'we feel strongly that AI must remain free from ideological bias, and that American AI will not be co-opted into a tool for authoritarian censorship.' The AI Action Plan continues this crusade against 'woke' AI, recommending that federal procurement guidelines are updated so that only AI companies that 'ensure that their systems are objective and free from top-down ideological bias' are given contracts. Trump has also taken steps to help build out US AI capacity domestically and abroad. A day after his inauguration, the president announced a joint venture between Softbank, Oracle, and OpenAI called Stargate that promised to build at least $100 billion in datacenter capacity in the US. In May, Trump and an entourage of tech leaders traveled to several gulf nations to announce a series of deals involving the construction of AI infrastructure across the region. Trump's desire to advance US AI interests is also reshaping foreign policy. During his first administration the president imposed export controls on Huawei and other Chinese firms aimed at slowing their ability to develop AI. Last week, the US government reversed restrictions on certain cutting-edge Nvidia and AMD chip sales to China, apparently shifting its focus towards helping US companies compete globally. A variety of tech, consumer protection, and civil society organizations are already speaking out with concerns about the action plan. Sarah Myers West and Amba Kak, the co-executive directors of the AI Now Institute, characterized the plan in a statement to WIRED as 'written by Big Tech interests invested in advancing AI that's used on us, not by us.' This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Protest against Gaza war prevents Israeli visitors from touring Greek island

ATHENS, Greece — A cruise ship carrying Israeli tourists left the Greek island of Syros Tuesday without its passengers disembarking, after more than 150 protesters demonstrated at the island's port, unfurling Palestinian flags and calling for an end to the war in Gaza. Carrying banners that read: 'Stop the Genocide' and 'No a/c in hell' — a reference to the conditions Palestinians face in the Gaza Strip — the protesters chanted slogans on the dock near where the cruise ship, the Crown Iris, was docked on Tuesday, local media said. There were no reports of any violence. The ship is operated by an Israeli company, Mano Cruise, which said about 1,700 passengers were on board and it is sailing to Cyprus. Greece's coast guard said the ship set sail at around 3 p.m., earlier than originally scheduled, but did not immediately have any further details. 'The management of Mano Cruise has decided in light of the situation in the city of Syros to now sail to another tourist destination,' the company said in a press release. 'All passengers and crew members are resting and spending time on the ship on their way to the new destination.' Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar contacted his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, over the incident, the Greek foreign ministry confirmed. It did not release any details of their discussion.

Top NY Dems ‘freaking out' over ‘absolute insanity' of Mamdani taking over NYC, Mike Lawler says

Hudson Valley Rep. Mike Lawler believes that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other top New York Democrats are 'freaking out' over socialist Zohran Mamdani's victory in the mayoral primary. Lawler (R-NY) said he believes reporting from journalist Mark Halperin that Jeffries (D-NY) quietly feels that if Mamdani becomes mayor, Democrats won't be able to take back control of the House. 'I think that's right,' Lawler told 'Fox & Friends' Wednesday when asked about Halperin's report. 'I think they are betwixt and between. You see Kathy Hochul, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries freaking out about the prospects of having a Marxist lead the financial capital of the world.' 'They understand this is a disaster, not only for Democrats, but for the country.' Halperin had claimed this week that 'Hakeem Jeffries strongly believes that if Mamdani wins, he [Jeffries] can't win the majority' and cited 'people who've spoken directly with the leader.' 3 House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has refrained from endorsing Zohran Mamdani. AP 3 Rep. Mike Lawler announced Wednesday that he won't run for governor. CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images Spokespeople for Jeffries have called that report 'patently false.' So far, Jeffries has declined to endorse Mamdani, who once compared the minority leader to notorious segregationist George Wallace and questioned his progressive bona fides. The two Democrats met in person last week and Jeffries plans to have another confab with Mamdani after he returns from his marriage celebration in Uganda. Lawler, who announced Wednesday that he will vie for his swing seat again in 2026 rather than challenge Gov. Kathy Hochul, gloated over the predicament mainstream Democrats face. 'This is absolute insanity to have somebody who says that he wants to seize the means of production, that he wants to ban private property ownership, that he wants to freeze the rent, that he wants free bussing and mass transit, and he wants government-run grocery stores,' he said of Mamdani. 'They understand this is a disaster in the suburban districts like mine that determine the outcome of control of Congress, and that's why they haven't yet endorsed him. But at the same token, they can't run too far away from him.' 3 Zohran Mamdani's shock victory has rocked the Democratic Party in New York. Getty Images Jeffries has been crusading to flip control of the House, where Republicans have a threadbare 219 to 212-seat majority. Historically, the party in control of the White House loses a chunk of House seats during the midterms. This has been the trend in every midterm election since 1938, with two main exceptions: 1998 and 2002. Republicans are hoping that other factors, such as Mamdani, could change that dynamic. Mamdani is the clear favorite to become mayor of the Big Apple, but he still must win a general election, though some polls show a tightening race.
