May the 4th be with you. Celebrate Star Wars Day in Michigan
May 4 is always a special day for fans of Star Wars and that's why on Sunday you will likely hear someone utter "May the 4th be with you."
The phrase comes from a line of dialogue in the 1977 film, "Star Wars," which gained the expanded title "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" as George Lucas' space opera saga expanded over the decades.
In the film, before the rebel fighters begin their assault on the Death Star, General Dodonna encourages them with the command: "Then man your ships! And may the Force be with you!"
"May the Force be with you" is a saying that, excuse the pun, flows through the Star Wars movies, TV series, books and comics. It's a saying used by Jedi Knights such as Obi-Wan Kenobi referencing the Force, a form of energy connecting the galaxy, which some Force-sensitive individuals can tap into and enhance their abilities. Saying, "May the Force be with you," is akin to wishing someone "Good Luck."
The Force is a mysterious energy that flows through all things and imbues the Jedi knights (the good guys) and the Sith (the bad guys) with their power to move objects, block laser blasts and influence those with weak minds.
The origins of the saying "May the 4th be with you," may be surprising.
While it was used in headlines for July 4 back to 1978, according to starwars.com, the first reported official use of the phrase came in May 1979, when Margaret Thatcher became the U.K.'s prime minister. To celebrate, the U.K. Conservative Party paid for a newspaper advertisement saying, 'May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!' wrote Steve Sansweet on starwars.com in 2013.
Over the years as the Star Wars universe grew with 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" through the prequel films and subsequent sequel trilogy, which included 2015's "The Force Awakens," the "May the 4th be with you" phenomenon grew into an unofficial "Star Wars Day" holiday with fans holding "Star Wars Day" parties or watching the movies in observance of the day.
The easiest way to celebrate is to stream some of the movies, all 11 of which are available on Disney+ (Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012).
Also on the streaming service is Season Two of "Andor," a series that is set before the events of 2016 film "Rogue One," which leads up to "Star Wars: A New Hope." The first six episodes of the series are available; six more are scheduled.
If you prefer to get out and mingle with other Star Wars fans, you're in luck.
Space Dive, 715 E. Milwaukee St. in Detroit, a two-weekend entertainment event, kicked off May 2 and continues through May 4, and then again May 9-10.
"The best dive bar in the galaxy. Immersive cantina. Costumes mandatory," the event's Facebook page announces.
The "event"ultimate immersive cantina" says costumes can be both elaborate and simple."You are your own character in a dive bar in a galaxy far, far away," the website says. "That could mean aliens or creatures of all species and sorts — smugglers, pilots, gangsters, bounty hunters, criminals, etc. Think vests, khaki jackets, ponchos, capes, straps, goggles, etc. A lot of looks you'd see in a Western would work. Wasteland gear works. Playa gear is perfect, and so on. A dash of face paint, an alien hair style. Earth-toned desert garb is simple, and a little goes a long way..."
Tickets for 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. (21-plus) event on May 4, 9 and 10 start at $52.50 and are available online. Family Day is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10.
"Kids are FREE, adults are only $10! Entry is paid at the gate the day of the event," the event says.

‘Tron: Ares' Will Have Nine Inch Nails at Their Most Industrial Rock
More than anything, folks are excited for Tron: Ares because of its soundtrack. In a first for the duo in their time as film composers, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are going by 'Nine Inch Nails' for their work on the threequel, and that means they're leaning fully into their rock band history. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Reznor said the Ares soundtrack features 'not one second of orchestra.' In fact, he went so far as to call the music not just different from the first two films (respectively scored by Wendy Carlos and Daft Punk), but one that 'takes a bigger swing for what music can do in cinema without sounding fucking pompous.' This was an active goal for the pair, who've previously worked on Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Soul, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Naughty Dog's upcoming sci-fi adventure Intergalactic: The Lost Prophet. What type of sound are the two cooking up? According to Reznor, the Tron: Ares score will be 'precise and unpleasant at times' without falling 'atonal and punishing' territory. He and Ross wanted to focus on the undertones of the film's story, which centers on Jared Leto's Ares leaving the digital space for the human world. As such, the duo keyed in on 'artificial characters' like Ares and Jodie Turner-Smith's Athena 'being infused with feelings and emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose and their replaceability, their lack of soul, in some ways.' Sounds like a lot, and given Disney's recent track record, we'll probably get to hear some of it before Tron: Ares arrives in theaters on October 10. Want more io9 news? D'oh! 'The Simpsons' executive producer Matt Selman has spoken out about the surprising decision to 'kill off' Marge Simpson during a flash-forward scene in the show's Season 36 finale. Although the decision caused major controversy within the hit cartoon's loyal fanbase, Selman slammed the backlash and claimed that it was 'ridiculous.' 5 'The Simpsons' executive producer Matt Selman has spoken out about the decision to 'kill off' Marge Simpson during a flash-forward scene in the show's Season 36 finale. The Hollywood Reporter via Getty Images 'Obviously, since 'The Simpsons' future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they're all different every time,' he told Variety during an interview published on Thursday, June 26. 'Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago,' Selman, 53, added. ''The Simpsons' doesn't even have canon!' The episode in question, titled 'Estranger Things' and which aired on May 18, focuses on siblings Bart and Lisa Simpson as they slowly grow apart after they stop watching 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show' together. 5 Selman slammed the backlash and claimed that it was 'ridiculous.' 20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection After a 35-year time jump, the audience learns that Marge has died, Bart and Lisa are estranged, and Homer Simpson, the family's dad, is living in a retirement home. A short scene from Marge's funeral shows Homer in tears while the rest of the Simpsons family stands around him. At the end of the Season 36 finale, Marge watches from Heaven as Bart and Lisa save their dad from the retirement home and reconnect over a reboot of 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show.' 5 A short scene from Marge's funeral shows Homer in tears while the rest of the Simpsons family stands around him. The Simpsons/Disney+ 'I'm so happy my kids are close again,' the Simpsons family matriarch says. It is then revealed that Marge met and married Beatles superstar Ringo Starr while in Heaven. But viewers were not happy to learn that the show's creators 'killed off' Marge Simpson, and many took to social media to express their shock and outrage. 'I haven't even watched The Simpsons in 10+ years but they really killed MARGE?!' one person wrote on X after the episode aired. 5 At the end of the Season 36 finale, Marge watches from Heaven as Bart and Lisa reconnect over a reboot of 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show.' The Simpsons/Disney+ 'What's this I'm hearing they killed Marge Simpson off?' another fan added. 'Marge Simpson is dead?' a third critic commented. 'Utter woke nonsense!' Surprisingly, Selman welcomed the backlash and claimed that it was further proof that 'The Simpsons' and its beloved characters are still relevant after 36 years on TV. 5 Selman welcomed the backlash and claimed that it was further proof that 'The Simpsons' is still relevant after 36 years on TV.
