Outlander's Sam Heughan to play Macbeth in Royal Shakespeare Company debut
The British theatre company has announced its programme of events for 2025/2026, including a raft of plays that will be staged in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of famous playwright William Shakespeare.
In the RSC's latest version of Macbeth, Scottish actor Heughan, 45, known for playing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser in romance drama Outlander, will star opposite The Day Of The Jackal actress Lia Williams, as Lady Macbeth.
Heughan said: 'At age 18, standing on the main stage of the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh, playing 'spear-carrier number 2' (essentially a glorified extra) in a production of Macbeth, I could only dream of one day playing the infamous title character. 'It feels full circle to be returning to the stage, after over a decade working primarily in television and film.
'Not only is Macbeth my favourite Shakespeare play: intense, immediate and unsettling, it also happens to be famously Scottish.
'The RSC has always been at the pinnacle of my ambition and I feel deeply honoured and thankful to be working alongside some enormously talented and creative people.
'The Other Place is the perfect space to create an intense, intimate production and, like Lady M, we will be calling upon the spirits of the RSC's highly acclaimed past productions for their blessing.'
David Tennant, Sir Ian McKellen, and Ralph Fiennes are among the actors who have played the famous character who, consumed by greed and power, murders the king to take the Scottish throne for himself.
The new production will be shown at The Other Place theatre from October 9 to December 6. PA Media Adrian Lester is to play Cyrano de Bergerac (Ian West/PA).
Elsewhere, four of Shakespeare's most famous characters have their stories revisited across two performances, also being staged at The Other Place, from January 2026.
The first performance in All Is But Fantasy explores the story of Lady Macbeth, who is consumed by guilt after plotting to murder King Duncan, and Emilia, a character in tragedy play, Othello.
The second performance looks at the story of Juliet, from tragic romance story Romeo And Juliet, and Richard III, who uses manipulation to become king in the eponymous play.
Olivier award-winning actor Adrian Lester will play the title role of Cyrano de Bergerac in a new version of Edmond Rostand's play about the novelist and playwright, showing at the Swan Theatre from September 27 to November 15.
Over at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Harry Potter star Alfred Enoch will star as Henry V in a play running from March 14 to April 25 2026.
Other highlights include an 80-minute staging of King Lear and a two-part adaptation of John Galsworthy's novels, The Forsyte Saga, both playing at the Swan Theatre later in the year, with the former also going on tour. PA Media Ncuti Gatwa will feature in the West End premiere of a play that re-imagines the relationship between rival playwrights Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare (Ian West/PA).
The RSC is also staging plays in the West End and recently announced the UK premiere of Liz Duffy Adams's Born With Teeth, which will play at Wyndham's Theatre, previewing on August 13 with a final performance on November 1.
The production follows rival playwrights Christopher Marlowe, played by Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa, and Shakespeare, played by Killing Eve's Edward Bluemel.
Over in North America, Lolita Chakrabarti's acclaimed stage adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's award-winning novel Hamnet embarks on a three-date tour of the US in Spring 2026.

Glastonbury stars to headline Milngavie Street Party 2025
Drum and bass duo Fabio and Grooverider, DJ Craig Charles, and Mercury Music Prize nominees Corto Alto will headline this year's Milngavie Street Party. The stars are set to perform at the two-day event taking place on August 29 and 30. "It's crazy to think that some of these guys were on the stage at Glastonbury just a few weeks ago." Other acts scheduled to perform at this year's festival include The View star Kyle Falconer, Belle and Sebastian's Chris Geddes, and The Beatles Dub Club. The event, now in its third year, will also host family-friendly activities, food and drink stalls, and a street parade. Billy said: "It's events like this which really help put Milngavie on the map. "The street party is a great reason to come into the town and discover more about what we have here. "Geographically, we're ideally placed for an event like this, bringing people here to visit and stay. "I don't think there will be another town of Milngavie's size anywhere else in Scotland putting on an event with such a superb line-up this summer." The Milngavie Street Party will be centred around Stewart Street Car Park, with performances at nearby Charlie's Loft and Fullbacks. Events on the Friday will take place from 4pm, while the party will start at 12pm on the Saturday. Open-air bars, street market, and food court are set to entertain festival-goers during the day, with ticketed shows kicking off in the evening. The festival, backed by Milngavie BID, is expected to boost local businesses and promote the "choose local" message of the Scotland Loves Local Week. Outlander star to play Hercule Poirot at Glasgow theatre
Mark Hadfield will play the iconic detective in Lucy Bailey's new production of Death on the Nile, coming to the Theatre Royal, Glasgow from February 24 to 28. The new production marks the European premiere of Ken Ludwig's adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic. It follows sell-out tours of And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express. He has also starred in several productions for the RSC, including Cymbeline and Tamburlaine. Karen Pirie star Emer Kenny married to huge TV presenter with toddler son
Karen Pirie is back and she's set for a whirlwind - but off-screen, things were just as intense for series creator Emer Kenny, who couldn't rely on her famous (and busy) husband. Karen Pirie's second season is packed with intense drama and explosive bombshells - but things were just as intense behind the scenes. Series creator Emer Kenny juggled triple duties as writer, executive producer and cast member as Karen's best friend River… while also being a new mum. 'Filming was hectic,' she says, 'My baby was 12 weeks old when I started writing the season and he was 18 months old when we were shooting. He came to Glasgow with me for three months.' Emer had a secret weapon, but it wasn't her husband, presenter Rick Edwards. 'I wouldn't have been able to do it without my mum,' she says. 'My husband was away working in Germany at the Euros because he's a presenter, so I had my mum with me at all times.' Kylie Minogue helped too, making a daunting experience a delight: 'Kylie has her own brand of rose that we drank the whole way through. It was absolutely crazy but I never feel more alive than when we're making stuff. It just feels thrilling.' Lauren Lyle returns to the ITV crime drama as the sharp, scrappy Scottish detective in the second season of Karen Pirie, and DI Karen's ready to ruffle a few feathers. Freshly promoted - albeit reluctantly - she's still got everything to prove. 'She's determined to prove herself,' Lauren says. 'Even though she's been promoted, she's still doubted. It's a reluctant promotion. Where her boss says, 'You're difficult but you're great so you deserve it.' That's what drives her. There's a general frustration with men being in her way and having to listen to them.' So it's no surprise that Emer also felt the pressure. 'It was a little daunting,' she says, 'Season one was my first time writing a show. Coming back, you really hope you can match the energy and bring another good story. So I was a little daunted but the book has a really exciting story.' Based on A Darker Domain, the second novel in the Karen Pirie series, the new season dives into a case that's haunted the nation for decades: the 1984 disappearance of heiress Catriona Grant and her toddler son, Adam. 'She's kidnapped at gunpoint, and then a ransom note arrives at her family home with a polaroid of her, and she is never seen again,' teases Emer. 'There's never a handover. No other ransom note was received.' Until now. When a body is found in a remote quarry, it blows the case wide open. But it's not Catriona. 'It's a man,' says Emer, 'But her car key is in his pocket.' As the investigation unfolds, so do the secrets - including Catriona's steamy, hidden affair with Mick, played by The Last Kingdom 's Mark Rowley. 'Julia (Brown) and Mark were amazing together,' Emer says, 'When I got their auditions in, I knew it would work. It was really important that their love story felt romantic and real.' But Catriona isn't the only one getting her heart tangled this season. Karen's own love life heats up with DS Phil Parhatka, played by Zach Wyatt, but she's keeping it strictly under wraps. 'Karen's under the impression a woman can only have one of the other - a career or a home life,' Lauren says. 'Phil's a good, smart man who's willing to support her, but Karen thinks she has to choose her career to keep getting ahead. Her career gives her a sense of worth, but it can damage her love life.' But the cold case earns her more attention and Karen struggles to keep the balance. 'No one at work knows they're together and she wants to keep it that way,' Emer says. 'But there's a whole new level of public interest. This is an even bigger case than the first one so she has a lot of eyes on her.' If the stakes are higher, the humour's sharper too - something inspired by Miss Congeniality. 'Lauren and I always talk about Sandra Bullock 's character in that film as a big touchstone. We love her humour and her no-nonsense personality,' Emer says. Other icons helped shape Karen's DNA: Helen Mirren 's steely Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect, Kate Winslet 's bruised brilliance in Mare of Easttown and Toni Collette 's grit in Unbelievable. Season two took the cast from gritty Glasgow streets to the sun-drenched chaos of Malta. 'We had to move the shoot to September because it was too hot in Malta to shoot,' Emer remembers. 'We had tons of running scenes through the streets of Malta in 40 degree heat. But I think they loved it. I think they loved having their inner James Bond moments.' Audiences clearly love it too and with eight novels in the series (and counting), there's no shortage of source material. 'There is potential for another season and ITV are really supportive,' Emer says. 'It just depends on whether the audience wants more.' But for now, Karen is here to stay - and she's fiercer than ever.
