Sabah retain overall title

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah deaf athletes successfully defended their overall title in the National Deaf Athletics Championship held at the City Stadium in Penang over the weekend. They took home 11 gold, three silver and two bronze medals to top the medal table for the second time following their maiden victory last year where they collected eight golds, seven silvers and five bronzes. The gold medals winners were Steffy Stacy Lakim (100m, 200m, long jump), Daniel Allex Bobay Alex (200m, 400m, long jump), Elvinsoon Tiono Tinus (discus, shot put), men's 4x400m (Daniel Allex, Ali Uwais Redzuan, Azlan Kuste, Aidil Asyraff Juakim); 4x100m mixed (J. Walddren J. Oswald, Ali Uwais Redzuan, Steffy Stacy Lakim, Atasya Faqeha Juakim); 4x400m mixed (Azlan Kuster, Atasya Faqeha Juakim, Aidil Asyraff Juakim, Steffy Stacy Lakim). The silver medals were delivered by Elvinsoon Tiono Tinus (javelin), women's 4x100m team (Neovatte Jospely, Steffy Stacy Lakim, Atasya Faqeha Juakim, Elsie Elissa Noraimin) and the men's 4x100m team (Aidil Asyraff Juakim, J. Walddren J. Oswald, Azlan Kuste, Daniel Allex), while the bronze medals came from Atasya Faqeha Juakim (400m), women's 4x400m (Neovatte Jospely, Elsie Elissa Noraimin, Leona Simon, Pyster Yvone Rony). Sabah was represented by 12 athletes led by coach Mario Ocado Pajarillo with Juiren Elip and Fakhrul Nazri as officials. Sabah Deaf Sports Association president Spencer Soo Kok Heng when contacted on Tuesday congratulated the contingent for the success in defending their title. He urged the athletes to build on the momentum and focus on the coming Sopma XXII Sarawak in October this year. He added that following their impressive achievement, Azlan Kuste, Ali Uwais, Elvinsoon Tiono, Steffy Stacy, Aidil Asyraff and Atasya Faqeha have been selected to represent the country at the 2nd SEA Deaf Games to be held in Indonesia later this year. World Bicycle Day on MPS calendar

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) plans to include the World Bicycle Day Ride as part of its official annual calendar to promote inclusivity and a sustainable lifestyle. Its President Walter Kenson said cycling is a unifying activity that transcends age, background and ability. It is open to everyone, including local leaders and both state and federal civil servants in the District. 'This is the spirit we want to cultivate in Sandakan. Organising casual cycling events such as this is in line with MPS's aspiration to develop the District into an eco-friendly, healthy and sustainable city. 'Cycling is more than just a leisure activity. It is a lifestyle that benefits both physical and mental health, while also helping to reduce pollution and urban traffic congestion,' he said. Walter believes that such programmes can strengthen community ties, raise awareness on green mobility, and encourage a culture of active living among Sandakan residents. He said this when officiating the District-level World Bicycle Day 2025 programme at the Piazza, Harbour Mall on Saturday. His speech was delivered by his deputy, Wilson Thomas. Also present were Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, MPS Secretary and Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman Liau Fui Fui, and Sandakan Cycling Club (SCC) President Mohd Soffian Eting. MPS is among the first local authorities in Sabah to respond to the call and take the lead in initiating a World Bicycle Day ride in collaboration with Sandakan's cycling community. This year's event was held in partnership with SCC and several other agencies. Speaking to the media, Soffian welcomed the proposal to make the event a fixed item in MPS's annual calendar, saying the club is always ready to collaborate with the council on future programmes. 'Such events also help promote tourism in Sandakan through sports and recreation,' he said. A total of 180 participants from Sandakan, Felda Sahabat Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid took part in the 12km ride. Special recognition was given during the event to the oldest participant (64 years old), the youngest (12), and a participant in the disabled category. "I'm truly grateful for all the kind messages and concerns for my well-being. I promise to take better care of my body as I focus on healing and prepare for the next opportunity to represent Malaysia,' she posted on Facebook. The 32-year-old added that she would continue to cheer her fellow teammates on in Singapore. "Please join me in sending them our support, luck and prayers as they continue to compete for Malaysia,' she said. On Monday (July 28), Pandelela was competing with Lee Yiat Qing in the 10m platform synchronised event when she had to withdraw after two dives due to the same injury, which she sustained earlier this month. Meanwhile, Yiat Qing failed to advance to the 10m platform semi-finals after finishing outside the top 18 in the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre here today. The 17-year-old finished 29th with a total of 240.20 points after five dives. National swimmers Khiew Hoe Yean and Tan Khai Xin also failed to advance in their respective events. 120 students join football clinic led by Sabah legends

RANAU: A total of 120 students from all over the district participated in a two-day Basic Football Clinic under former Sabah State Players held here recently. The programme led by legendary Sabah striker, Datuk James Wong also lined up players who were very popular in the 90s such as Yap Wai Loon, Harun Laban, Henry Anjun, Gerald Mojilu, and several other former state players. The programme held at SMK Lohan involved 40 female students and 80 male students from four schools, namely SMK Ranau, SMK Mat Salleh, SMK Lohan, and SMK Kundasang. The Chairman of the Ranau Clasico Team who is also the Ranau Zone Programme Coordinator, Romzie @ Likad Muhamad said the Basic Football Clinic was held to unearth talents to be promoted to higher levels. 'We are always trying to find talented young boys and girls from the age of 13-15 who are seen to have high interest and talent in this sport. 'We hope that through organising this kind of event, it will open up opportunities for anyone who has dreams of becoming a good football player to come forward and showcase themselves. 'This program will also continue to be held in the future with more participation from the target group and at the same time identify potential players in this district,' he said. As a future plan, Romzie said that talented players will be called to participate in training in Kota Kinabalu and will then be developed to a higher level. He expressed his well wishes and congratulations, especially to all the students who have attended the programme, which is rarely held here, and hoped that they gained valuable experience through the programme.
