A man was arrested for setting fire to a Melbourne synagogue during Shabbat dinner. Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack.
A man suspected of setting fire to an Australian synagogue as worshippers ate dinner inside has been arrested and charged, police said Sunday.
The 34-year-old allegedly set the front door of a busy Melbourne synagogue ablaze on Friday night as around 20 people ate dinner in observance of Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest.
The attack has drawn strong condemnation from the prime ministers of both Australia and Israel.
Victoria state police charged the man with a string of offences, including reckless conduct endangering life.
'Detectives will continue to examine the intent and ideology of the person charged to determine if the incident is in fact terrorism," police said in a statement.
The worshippers escaped unscathed through the back of the synagogue before firefighters doused the blaze.
Police said they were yet to find a link between the two other incidents targeting Jewish residents in Melbourne on Friday night.
A group of about 20 protesters swarmed an Israeli-owned restaurant, interrupting the dinner service as they chanted at patrons.
The protesters allegedly flipped over tables and smashed a window, according to local media.
Cars were set on fire and daubed with antisemitic graffiti in a third incident in another part of the city.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday condemned the synagogue attack as a 'cowardly" act of violence.
'And the fact that people were having a peaceful dinner, and (were) disrupted by this act of violence could have had catastrophic consequences," he said in a statement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was 'reprehensible", while decrying the restaurant incident as a 'violent assault" by 'pro-Palestinian rioters".
'We demand that the Australian government take all action to deal with the rioters to the fullest extent of the law and prevent similar attacks in the future," he said.
Jewish neighbourhoods in Melbourne and Sydney have in recent months been hit by a wave of antisemitic vandalism.
Masked arsonists firebombed a different Melbourne synagogue in December, prompting the government to create a federal task force targeting antisemitism.

Israel kills Hamas naval commander in Gaza airstrike amid stalled ceasefire talks

Israel killed Ramzi Saleh, Hamas' top naval commander in northern Gaza, in an airstrike, according to latest reports. The attack happened in Gaza City and also killed two other Hamas fighters: Hisham Mansour (deputy mortar chief) and Nissim Abu Sabha (mortar unit operative). Israel called Saleh a "big source of knowledge" who was planning sea attacks against Israeli forces. This comes as Israel keeps targeting Hamas leaders. Israel's defense forces took to X to write, 'ELIMINATED: Commander of Hamas' Naval Force in northern Gaza and additional terrorists. The terrorist Ramzi Ramadan Abd Ali Saleh was eliminated by the IDF in Gaza City. Saleh was a significant source of knowledge within Hamas and in recent weeks, was involved in planning and advancing maritime terrorist attacks against IDF troops operating in Gaza.' Recently, they confirmed the killing of Mohammed Deif, Hamas' top military chief, and Mohammed Sinwar, a key commander and brother of Hamas' former leader. These strikes aim to weaken Hamas' ability to fight. Hamas is losing its top wartime leaders fast. The group's secret 'War Council', five men who planned the October 7 attack on Israel, is now gone. Israel killed Mohammed Deif in July 2024, Marwan Issa in March 2024, and Yahya Sinwar in October 2024. Mohammed Sinwar was killed in May. These losses leave Hamas without its most experienced commanders. However, not all Israeli claims succeed. In one case, a Hamas commander named Hussein Fayyad reappeared after Israel said he was dead, showing Hamas can still surprise people. Despite this, experts say Hamas is weaker than ever. The war has been devastating for Gaza. Since fighting restarted on March 18, over 6,860 Palestinians have died and 24,220 have been hurt. The total Palestinian deaths since October 2023 now stand at 57,418, with 136,261 injured. Israel says its strikes try to avoid civilians, but the damage is huge. Nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people are homeless. While a shaky ceasefire recently allowed some aid in and prisoner swaps, fighting continues. Hamas still runs parts of Gaza, even with its leaders being killed. The group vows to fight on despite its losses. As the war grinds on, diplomatic efforts continue. Prime Minister Netanyahu visited Washington on July 7 to meet President Trump and other US leaders. They discussed a possible 60-day ceasefire deal to free 10 living hostages and 18 bodies held by Hamas, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. But major disagreements remain: Hamas wants the war to end forever, while Israel only accepts a temporary pause. Talks are stuck. Netanyahu also planned to discuss Iran, Syria relations, and trade with US officials. Meanwhile, Hamas insists it won't quit, with one leader declaring victory despite Israel's attacks.

X withholds public access to Reuters and Reuters World accounts in India

X, formerly Twitter, withheld public access to official handles of Reuters and Reuters World in India on Sunday morning despite the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) saying there's no requirement from the Government of India to withhold the two handles were withheld in India by X 'in response to a legal demand,' said a notification on the platform. On May 9, X had withheld its own Global Government Affairs (@GlobalAffairs) account within India. This occurred hours after X, through this account, had tweeted on the night of May 8 that the Indian government had directed X to block over 8,000 accounts in India. Later, X unblocked the Global Government Affairs account. 'There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters handle. We are continuously working with X to resolve the problem,' an official spokesperson for MeitY said in a statement.X and MeitY did not respond to ET's requests for comment on the reason for withholding these accounts in the Elon Musk-owned microblogging platform has sued the Indian government in the Karnataka High Court over previous blocking orders sent by the government under a section of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 without adequate safeguards. The final hearing in the case is scheduled July 8. X has made a plea to amend its petition filed in the Karnataka High Court four months ago, making an additional demand to scrap Rule 3(1)(d) of the Information Technology Rules that empowers government agencies to order intermediaries to remove content from their platforms. The original petition, filed in March, had sought the court to declare that Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, 2000 does not authorise the government to issue information blocking orders to intermediaries, or social media platforms, like X. Section 79(3)(b) provides for authorities to remove immunity from liability accorded to intermediaries if they failed to comply with orders to take down unlawful content. In conjunction with Rule 3(1)(d) of the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, it also allows them to issue takedown orders.

Melania Trump's Texas floods post sparks outrage as she offers just two things to victims; ‘You and your husband…'

Melania Trump has come under fire for expressing her 'thoughts' and "prayers to the people affected by the catastrophic Texas flash floods. Melania Trump faces backlash for offering thoughts and prayers after deadly Texas floods that claimed 51 lives.(AFP) On Friday, devastating, swift-moving floods on the Guadalupe River swelled 26 feet (8 meters), killing at least 51 people and leaving 27 girls who were living at a summer camp in Kerr County missing. In a statement on Saturday, Melania addressed the natural tragedy on X, writing: 'My heart goes out to the parents in Texas during this difficult time. I am holding you in my thoughts and sending prayers for strength, comfort, and resilience.' Trump critics quickly blasted Melania over her post, claiming that thought and prayers are not enough in wake of her husband's massive budget cuts, which have affected federal forecasters and disaster response agencies. Before the deafly floods hit Texas, five former National Weather Service directors wrote a letter to US President Donald Trump, warning that further funding cuts would cause fatalities. 'Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life,' they warned. Additionally, a Florida weatherman informed viewers during his usual broadcast that he would no longer be able to continue forecasting local weather due to budget constraints. Surprising 'Royal' details revealed Melania Trump's faces backlash amid Texas floods Reacting to Melania's post on X, one person asked, 'When is the President of the United States going to say something? I understand it's not all about him this time, but seriously????' 'Why aren't you deported yet?' another questioned. 'Instead of Support, when you send some of that money that you and your husband scammed out of the US citizens,' a third user wrote. 'Are you going to apologize for Trump's gutting of NOAA and the NWS, which clearly put people in Texas at greater risk? How many lives could have been saved by timely warnings - or would that be 'socialism'?' the fourth user chimed in. 'How about telling Donny to give back the money to FEMA and NOAA? Thoughts and prayers don't do a whole lot!' one more stated. Meanwhile, some ridiculed the first lady for dancing with Trump on White House balcony during Fourth of July celebrations.
