Hawaii Disney resort tourists 'panicking' over tsunami as 'everything shuts down'
Tourists in Hawaii have had their dream holiday turned on its head as they've been forced to take shelter and await a tsunami hitting the shores of the island following an explosive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Russia.
Nearly two million people have been evacuated across Japan with warnings also issued for Hawaii and the entirety of the US west coast after the most powerful earthquake anywhere since 2011.
Jared and Kelly Newcomer are holidaying on the island of Oahu at Disney's Aulani resort, where prices start at $544 (£406) a night. They shared an update on social media as they prepared to "wait out" the natural disaster. It comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain.
Jared wrote on Facebook: "Well this is wild. We're sheltered in place on the 10th floor of the Disney Aulani hotel in Hawaii waiting for the tsunami.
"Supposed to hit in half an hour. Praying it's not too bad. Everything is shut down, people are panicking. I was able to find some chips, ice cream, and bottled water to hold us over."
Finding a silver lining, Jared added: "I actually found the last Coors Light in the hotel haha! I feel good about it, just gonna wait it out and watch from our balcony."
The National Weather Service says that 'a tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii. A tsunami warning remains in effect for the entire state of Hawaii.
Tsunami waves have already struck parts of Russia, Hawaii, California and Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, with dramatic footage showing walls of water crashing against shores.
One person has died so far, and tsunami flooding has damaged the port at Severo-Kurilsk on Russia's Kuril Islands. Flights to Hawaii have been suspended.
An earthquake and tsunami warning for the US reads: "An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 has struck the eastern coast of Russia in the Kamchatka Peninsula region."
"A tsunami threat message has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. If you are in the affected areas potentially affected by the earthquake or tsunami you should follow the advice of the local authorities."
Russia's earthquake is one of the strongest ever recorded in the region. Horror four metre high tsunami waves left buildings in pieces and caused severe flooding in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
It had a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 when it initially struck, but the US Geological Survey later updated its measurement to 8.8 magnitude.
The shallow quake has caused injuries for several people while on Japan's eastern coast an order was made to evacuate. A nursery was damaged but most buildings were able to stand firm, Russian authorities said.
Nearly two million individuals have been given evacuation advisories in over 220 municipalities along Japan's Pacific coast, according to the country's Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

Sri Lanka visa: Brits soon won't have to pay to visit beautiful south Asian country
We all love a holiday, but we're also all on a budget at the moment, so any options to save money whilst on a getaway are very welcomed. And, if you're a Brit, one of the planet's most beautiful destinations just got a bit cheaper to visit. Sri Lanka has just announced plans to scrap visa fees for visitors from 33 countries – including the UK – in a bid to boost its tourism industry. At present, any Brit has to pay $50 (roughly £37.50), to gain entry to the south Asian country, but that fee is soon set to be waived. This is an extension of an ongoing Sri Lankan scheme which offers a free 'tourist visa', valid for 30 days at a time, to travellers from India, China, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan. On July 25, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced that the government had approved the move to increase the list of countries eligible for this type of visa, and Britain made the cut. The hope is that this will make Sri Lanka a more appealing destination for tourists and travellers, and that all the extra people visiting will more than make up for the near £50 million of losses in revenue that will come from the change. In a press release, Herath explained that this move is all part of a wider plan, saying: 'We have stabilised the economy, and through policy changes in tourism, we aim to ensure steady growth in arrivals'. He added that the tourism industry is 'progressing day by day' and that it could become a 'key contributor' to the country's economy. When the tourism visa does come into effect for British travellers, you'll still need to apply for electronic travel authorisation, but this should be a quick and easy process. And it will definitely be a free one. We don't know the exact date that the e-visa will be opened to British travellers, but it will likely be fairly soon. Just make sure to double check the current regulations before you travel. If you do head over to the island nation anytime soon, you'll be amongst some two million annual visitors, many from the UK. It's especially popular with those on a budget as you can get a great deal on food and accommodation for not too much money, and it is full of gorgeous beaches and scenery. Here's our guide to Sri Lanka for anyone planning a trip. Travel with Time Out There's a lot to consider when it comes to planning a holiday. For instance, did you know that the British passport has gone down in the global rankings? Or that the best family-friendly attraction on Earth is in the UK? If you're wondering where to go for a late summer vay-cay, try out one of the best places to travel to this August.

'We turned up a year early for our holiday and were stuck in a hotel lobby'
Nicole Collings and her three sisters jetted off to Italy to celebrate her 40th birthday in style - but were dealt with quite a shock when they finally arrived at the hotel reception in Florence Four sisters were dealt an embarrassing blow after a holiday booking blunder caused them to turn up to their hotel an entire year early. Nicole Collings and her three siblings were left in stitches in the lobby of the Hotel Royal in Florence, Italy, when they realised their mistake. The group had flown over to celebrate Nicole's 40th birthday, but after they arrived at the hotel reception, they were dealt with quite a shock. Mum-of-three Nicole was told the booking was actually made for 2026. One of the sisters, Rachel, nicknamed "CEO" by the others for being the most organised, was in charge of the flights and accommodation at the time of the clumsy booking. It comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. The group were forced to stay in a two-bedroom basement room with no air conditioning because their original four-person suite was not available. The four flew over to Florence from Southend, Essex, and were hoping for the larger suite at the Hotel Royal, which costs around £77 a night. Wanting to make the most of the birthday bash, the girls dropped their bags in the cramped room and left to explore the city. The stay, from Friday, July 25 to Monday, July 28, was still 'wonderful,' despite the blunder, the sisters said. 'We all looked at each other in panic but then burst out laughing,' Nicole from Essex told Luxury Travel Daily. 'We were informed that there wasn't a reservation for us. Rachel, who we call the CEO, showed the confirmation email to the receptionist, who then pointed out that the booking was actually for 2026. It was a real mix of panic and humour, we decided to just go with it and make the best of the bad situation. 'The substitute room was really small, with a double bed and a single bed brought in. It had no hot water and no air con despite the boiling weather. We even had to manage getting ready with four girls using one tiny mirror,' Nicole added. 'The hotel staff were really amused by it, but they were also quite supportive, understanding the humorous side of the situation. 'We didn't spend much time in the room due to its size and conditions. Despite the initial hiccup, we had a wonderful time together, and it was hilarious. "We bring the vibes, we are extremely close and always have fun, our energy is electric. We haven't made any decisions about returning in 2026 yet.'
