5 Useful iPadOS 26 Features That Transform Apple's Tablet Into A Mini Computer
Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC for short, has come and gone, with the 2025 iteration shifting its focus to one of the key foundations that power product experiences – user interface (UI) design. The company's Liquid Glass update, its first major visual overhaul in 10 years, continues in the same vein of sleek minimalism, eschewing the old frosted glass look for a see-through, more fluid look for app widgets, menus, buttons, and the like.
Hailing from a blend of different influences, from the operating system (OS) in the Vision Pro headset to real-time Gaussian blurring in iOS 7, the new design language is set to roll out across all Apple devices, including the iPad, iMac, iPhone, and more. The change isn't purely for aesthetic reasons, however, as Liquid Glass also forms the basis for unifying its entire OS under a new numbering convention based on the year after their debut: iOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, and iPadOS 26, alongside macOS Tahoe, the only outlier of the lot.
To that end, the lineup of software brings new capabilities and quality-of-life improvements – some shared, and others, platform-exclusive – into the mix. Here are five iPadOS 26 features that blur the line between tablet and laptop, turning the former into a mini computer (of sorts).
Say goodbye to Split View and Slide Over, as Apple presents a revamped, more intuitive windowing system for multitasking. Where the process is currently confined to toggling between two open windows at once, iPadOS 26 allows users to view all their open windows
simultaneously, switch to the one they need, and place them anywhere on the screen, or arrange and resize them with the flick of a finger, making it possible to run tasks side-by-side, or several at a time in the same window.
Apps that were previously resized will also open in the exact size and position as before, while tiling locks a window screen to the left or right side of the display. For those who favour grouping their windows into distinct stages, iPadOS 26 is compatible with Stage Manager and supports external displays on the side.
Managing files and navigating menus is easier than ever with iPadOS 26. An updated List view, taking after its Mac counterpart, displays more details about a document in resizable columns and collapsible folders, and folders can be pinned or dragged from Files to the dock. Customisation options, such as custom colours and icons, will make them more easily identifiable, with users able to choose default apps for specific file types.
Separately, the addition of Mac's menu bar simplifies the process of locating specific commands or features within an app or window through tabs like File, Edit, View, Format, and more. Specific to developers, the menu bar in their own apps can be customised as well.
Previously only available on iOS, the Journal app unlocks the ability to track day-to-day activities and experiences with images, videos, and audio recordings on the iPad. Drawings and handwriting can be incorporated through Apple Pencil or touch, which is a natural fit for the tablet's larger canvas. Apart from greater viewing comfort, the extra screen real estate should evoke a feel that aligns closer to traditional hand-to-paper journaling – a welcome invitation for illustrators and writers who prefer to do things the old-fashioned way.
Additionally, users can keep multiple journals for various aspects of life, with access to a map view that sorts entries by location.
iPadOS 26 offers a dedicated app for editing and viewing PDFs in the form of Preview, where documents and images can be marked up via Apple Pencil or touch, eliminating the need for third-party software. Alongside AutoFill, used to quickly fill out forms, the iPad will make it possible to create an empty page or pull up saved files directly from the Files app.
Here's one for the content creators, podcasters, video editors, and multimedia professionals. With iPadOS 26 comes an audio input selector, allowing different microphones to be selected for each app and individual websites, and better audio clarity, enhanced through Voice Isolation that blocks ambient noise.
Local Capture, meanwhile, touts high-quality recordings with any video conferencing app. Powered by echo cancellation, it keeps the user's voice front and centre, and enables the sharing of both audio and video files once the call is over.
The first iPadOS 26 developer beta is now live, with public betas following in July. The final version is slated to launch this fall, likely after the next big iPhone reveal event, which typically takes place in September. When it eventually arrives, iPadOS 26 will be available on the following models: iPad Pro (M4)
11' iPad Pro (1st gen and later)
12.9' iPad Pro (3rd gen and later)
iPad Air (M2 and later)
iPad Air (3rd gen and later)
iPad (A16, 8th gen and later)
iPad Mini (A17 Pro, 5th gen and later)
The iPad may still fall short of the utility that a MacBook brings, but the software update promises added versatility that pushes productivity to greater heights. Between that and inherited accompaniments like Apple Intelligence and Continuity features, tablet multitasking is inching closer to becoming a total game-changer.

Expanded Apple Parental Controls Offer More Granular Controls, Including Permissions To Text New Numbers
With the dangers of unfiltered content targeting minors and teenagers, Apple is rolling out a new suite of parental control features aimed at protecting the young, including expanding age brackets to five categories – 4+, 9+, 13+, 16+, and 18+, up from 17 from before. As part of the new Communication Limits, which are part of Apple's Child Accounts created when setting up a new device for a child, parents can have tighter management over who their children communicate with across Messages, FaceTime, calling and iCloud contacts, as children must now send a request when they want to connect with a new phone number. With the new update, children must now seek parental approval whenever they contact a new phone number, and parents must either approve or decline a request. These new features will be made available to developers, who can choose to introduce a similar feature into their apps, allowing the young to chat, follow, or friend users through third-party apps. Introduced earlier this month at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the updated features will be part of the upcoming rollout of updated operating systems across Apple's host of hardware devices – iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, visionOS 26, and tvOS 26. Apple's parental controls and Child Accounts, managed via linked devices through Screen Time and Family Sharing, allow parents to monitor and limit their child's device by managing screen time through app limits, restrict access to content and app access, limit inappropriate content, control app purchases, and manage communication settings. Child Accounts are required for children under 16, and available for children up to 18. In a slightly more proactive mode, Apple's Communication Safety tool will also be updated to 'intervene' when it detects nudity in FaceTime calls, and also blur nudity in shared albums in the Photos app. The company has been constantly updating its parental controls to meet the increasing dangers posed by technology, most recently updating the way parents can access these controls via a PIN code. To prevent children from discovering and using their parents PIN code, parents will now be alerted whenever the PIN code is used on their child's devices, thereby warning parents of any unauthorised access. With the expansion of age ranges, parents can also protect their child's privacy by applying their child's age range within the apps used, in a manner that does not disclose a minor's birth date while accessing age-appropriate content and apps. And to better protect families, Apple App Store will now reflect when developers indicate that their apps offer user-generated content, messaging, or use advertising models. Apps that exceed the age-appropriate range will also not appear anywhere on the App Store. ‘Stellar Blade' On PC Is The Definitive Way To Experience Eve's Journey
Fan service is a beautiful thing. The mere notion of giving an audience exactly what they want is simple, yet wholly effective in drawing attention to a game, regardless of its quality. And while most titles of this nature offer nothing more than a visual treat, with no substantial accompanying gameplay systems to back it up, Shift Up's 2024 hack-and-slash jaunt Stellar Blade goes above and beyond. Alongside glorious fan service in the form of gorgeous character designs and eye-popping cosmetics to collect, its slick visuals are held together by a solid gameplay and combat foundation, becoming a testament to what a game can achieve when a studio understands its target audience. Since its release in April 2024, the game has seen constant post-launch support, not only fixing many of the gameplay issues listed in our review, but also a multitude of bonus free and paid content like a New Game+ mode, additional costumes, seasonal events, and crossovers with other IPs like PlatinumGames' 2017 action hit Nier Automata . Now that Stellar Blade is available on PC, those who were unable to play it on the first day of release due to PlayStation 5 launch exclusivity can finally hop on the hype train, joining a whole new player base in experiencing Eve's adventure the definitive way, complete with a suite of PC-specific features and improvements. Even on the base PS5, the performance of Stellar Blade was, well… stellar upon launch. The game had no problems hitting the coveted 60 frames per second (fps) on Performance Mode, even offering three different graphics modes, a feature not often seen on the platform: Performance Mode, which ran at 1440p upscaled to 4K at a practically locked 60fps; Balanced Mode, which ran at a dynamic 1080p to 1440p with temporal reconstruction up to 4K for cleaner image fidelity and also mostly stuck to 60fps; and a Quality Mode which targeted a native 4K image at a locked 30fps. The PC port removes these frame rate limitations, unlocking the game's maximum potential with possible frame rates well above 60fps, which is extremely important considering the timing-based nature of its combat. With the added fluidity, perfect parries and dodges are now much easier to pull off than before, making combat more satisfying as a result. To further improve performance, Stellar Blade also includes support for modern AI-assisted upscaling tools, such as NVIDIA DLSS 4 and AMD FSR 3, for ramping up performance with the least impact on visual quality. Frame generation technologies are also supported, such as NVIDIA's latest multi-frame generation, which boosts frame rates even further on GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards. On a gaming laptop powered by an RTX 5070 Ti mobile GPU, Stellar Blade achieved an average frame rate of between 180 and 200fps on maximum graphical settings, including DLSS 4 on Quality and with Multi-Frame generation turned on – an impressive feat for a laptop graphics card. Even without all the performance bells and whistles, the game's optimisation remains impressive. When tested on a lower-end Intel Arc A750 GPU (comparable to an RTX 4060) with an Intel Core i5-12400F processor, the game managed to maintain a mostly locked 60fps at a 3440×1440-pixel widescreen resolution with all settings at High, only dropping to the mid-50s during intensive cutscenes. Apart from performance, Stellar Blade 's PC port also includes various features exclusive to the platform, such as the 21:9 and 32:9 ultrawide and super ultrawide aspect ratios, alongside additional 4K background textures. Controller users can expect full support for the PlayStation DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive trigger features, with the ability to fully customise key layouts for gamepads, keyboards and mice for added flexibility. Additionally, a host of new content has been added across PC and PS5, including a new boss fight with Mann, the leader of the Sentinels, 25 additional Nano Suits, as well as Simplified Chinese and Japanese voiceovers with matching facial animations. A new paid crossover DLC with Goddess of Victory: Nikke has also been released for both platforms, bringing new game-inspired costumes and bonus missions featuring Nikke 's cover-shooting mechanics. With the PC release of Stellar Blade , there's no better time to hop in and witness Eve's journey for both newcomers and returning players. For more, check out our gameplay video above showcasing 45 minutes of the game running on an RTX 4090 gaming rig at max settings at an ultra-wide 3440×1440 resolution.
