Verizon wins private 5G contract for UK's Thames Freeport
Verizon Business has won a contract to build multiple private 5G networks at Thames Freeport, one of Britain's busiest shipping and logistics centers, the U.S. telecom giant said on Wednesday.
The deal, in partnership with Finland's Nokia, will see Verizon deploy private 5G networks across multiple industrial sites along the River Thames Estuary, including major ports and Ford's largest London manufacturing facility.
Private 5G networks provide dedicated connectivity that avoids the congestion and speed variations of public networks shared by multiple users, enabling advanced industrial applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI).
5G adoption in European ports is still at an early stage. The technology allows ports to handle larger volumes of data needed to run or track cargoes, cranes, drones and industrial sensors.
The companies did not disclose financial details of the agreement, only describing it as supporting a "multibillion-dollar operational transformation" of the region.
Thames Freeport is a 34 km-wide economic corridor established in 2021 as a designated UK "Free Trade Zone", offering a range of tax incentives and reliefs to businesses as part of efforts to revive the Thames Estuary region.
Verizon has been working with Nokia to develop private networks for manufacturing and logistics companies in international markets where it lacks its own public network infrastructure.
Nokia will serve as the sole hardware and software provider.
The networks will serve DP World London Gateway and DP World Logistics Park - Britain's largest deep-sea container port handling over 3 million units annually -, the Port of Tilbury and Ford's Dagenham plant.
Use cases will include AI-driven data analytics, predictive maintenance, process automation, autonomous vehicle control, safety monitoring and real-time logistics orchestration, Verizon said.

LONDON :Former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has joined the board of historic rival McLaren, a move that would have been unimaginable not so long ago. A filing with Companies House by Abu Dhabi-owned McLaren Group Holdings, which controls Woking-based sportscar maker McLaren Automotive, registered Montezemolo as a director on June 27. The 77-year-old Italian joined Ferrari in 1973 as founder Enzo Ferrari's assistant and became team manager in 1974, a year before the late Austrian triple champion Niki Lauda secured his first title. He also presided over the Formula One team during a golden era when Michael Schumacher won five of his career seven titles between 2000-2004 and served as chairman of both Ferrari and parent FIAT. Both Ferrari and McLaren are under different management now, with Montezemolo resigning his roles at the Italian luxury sportscar maker in 2014 and focusing on other business interests. CYVN, majority-owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, created McLaren Group Holdings in April after completing its acquisition of McLaren Automotive. The group includes a non-controlling stake in McLaren Racing, the Formula One team whose majority shareholder is Bahrain's Mumtalakat and which operates completely independently. Paul Walsh, executive chairman of McLaren Racing, is also one of the nine directors of McLaren Group Holdings, while McLaren team principal Andrea Stella previously worked for Ferrari. McLaren are the reigning Formula One constructors' world champions while Ferrari last won a title in 2008. Seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, who took his first title for McLaren in 2008, is now driving for Ferrari. News of Montezemolo's new role was greeted with some amazement in Italy. Trump wants EchoStar, FCC to reach 'amicable' deal over wireless licenses, company says
WASHINGTON :President Donald Trump prodded Dish TV parent EchoStar Corp and Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr earlier this month to reach an amicable deal over the fate of the company's wireless spectrum licenses, the company said in a filing on Friday. In May, the FCC told EchoStar it was investigating the company's compliance obligations to provide 5G service in the United States, questioning EchoStar's buildout extension and mobile-satellite service. Bloomberg News first reported that Trump met on June 12 with EchoStar Chair Charlie Ergen and later called Carr to take part in the meeting. EchoStar has been trying to shield its cache of wireless spectrum licenses from the threat of revocation by the FCC. The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on Friday and had previously declined to confirm the meeting took place. Carr did not immediately comment on the report on Friday but at a monthly FCC press conference on Thursday he told reporters, regarding EchoStar, that the "status quo needs to change" and added there was a "narrow window of opportunity here." EchoStar said in a filing on Friday that Trump "encouraged the parties involved to reach an amicable resolution." Ergen told Carr this month any reconsideration of the construction deadline extensions or revision to the 2 GHz band's sharing rules "would threaten the viability of EchoStar's current operations and future plans." U.S. satellite TV provider DirecTV terminated its agreement to acquire EchoStar's satellite television business last year, which includes rival Dish TV, over a failed debt-exchange offer. EchoStar said the FCC review was "harming EchoStar's ongoing deployment and threaten its viability as a wireless provider as well as endanger the video and broadband satellite services upon which millions of consumers rely." EchoStar previously disclosed that it missed roughly $500 million in interest payments, citing uncertainty around the ongoing FCC review but said on Friday that based on current discussions with the commission it was making interest payments to "further extend the timeline for EchoStar to explore an acceptable resolution of the FCC's stated concerns."
