GCC to construct new bus shelters, refurbish existing ones in 3 zones
In Tondiarpet, a new bus shelter is to be constructed at a Corporation-owned vacant site near R.K. Nagar. According to the GCC, the identified location spans 16,000 sq.ft. Of this, 11,677 sq.ft. will be covered with tensile roofing by a private agency, which will be roped in through a tender for ₹76.5 lakh. A total of ₹1.79 crore has been allotted for the project, which received administrative sanction on June 28, 2025.
The bus terminus on Jones Road, adjacent to Jawaharlal Street in West Saidapet, was damaged and in dire need of a revamp. The structure, covering 184.80 sq.m., is set to be refurbished with tensile roofing at a sanctioned amount of ₹10.5 lakh. Orders for the work were issued on July 7, 2025.
In Adyar, two damaged bus shelters, located near Easwaran Koil and Gokhale Road, are to be reconstructed with tensile-roofed structures. Administrative sanction for this work was issued on July 23, 2025.

Sanitation staff seek rollback of privatization
Chennai: For the fourth consecutive day, sanitation workers under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) from Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, and Ambattur zones staged a protest in front of Ripon Buildings, demanding the withdrawal of Greater Chennai Corporation's (GCC) move to privatize solid waste management in their areas. With more than 300 workers off duty, garbage clearance in these zones has been hit, forcing staff from neighbouring areas to work double shifts to clear backlog. Refusing to accept the outsourcing move beginning Aug 1, the conservancy staff said the decision was taken despite their continuous service in these roles for more than a decade. "We have been working for 15 years, hoping that our jobs would be made permanent. In 2021, the chief minister promised to do this. However, now they have privatized waste management in our zones. After handing over the contract to a private player, we were relieved of our duties. It has been four days since we commenced protest. "If solid waste management is outsourced, the sanitary workers' salary will be reduced from 23,000 to 15,000. He also outlined Telangana's ambitious economic goals of emerging as a $1 trillion economy in the next decade and contributing 10% to India's projected $30 trillion economy by 2047.
