'I'm a viral author but I can't quit my job'

BBC News19-04-2025
A former teacher said she remained a long way off being able to make a living as an author despite going viral on social media and her novel becoming an online bestseller.Vicky Ball's post on X about proudly selling two books at an event in December was viewed 25 million times and received more than 740,000 likes. It helped propel the 48-year-old's thriller novel, Powerless, to the top of Amazon's teen and young adult fiction chart.Mrs Ball, who lives in Colchester, said the attention had been "wonderful" but the industry remained "very difficult" for small authors to become established in.
"People do come up to me and ask if I am going to give up my job now and I'm like 'Well no, not really'," said Mrs Ball, who previously taught in Suffolk and now works at the University of Essex."It is still very difficult for a small author to get out there. "Obviously, if you look at the 25 million views on the post, if everyone had bought a book then that would have been amazing."I've sent emails to some book shops [asking them to stock my books] but I still haven't got anywhere."
She said the attention had helped her sell "a few hundred" books, with some going to countries around the world.Among them was an American fan who requested signed copies, said Mrs Ball."It's really encouraged me to keep going with the writing and I have almost finished my third book," she said."Going viral has helped to get me out there, so maybe it will help have an impact in the future and I can get bigger and maybe sell more books."Quite a few smaller authors have told me that I have inspired them to keep going, so that was really nice."
Mrs Ball said not all of the social media reaction had been positive."You do get the odd sort of negative comment, but I think they're probably just trolls, so I don't take that seriously," Mrs Ball said."There was one comment on Instagram, where someone said my book sucked but then on the positive side loads of people defended me, which was really sweet."

Fifty Cent trolls Diddy with AI-generated baby oil video

50 Cent has hit out at his old rival Sean 'Diddy' Combs with an AI-generated video referencing Combs' recent legal troubles. Those keeping up to date with showbiz feuds will be aware that 'Fiddy', real name Curtis James Jackson III, doesn't have a lot of time for Combs, who's recently been on trial for several sex-related felonies. Yet despite Combs being acquitted of the most serious charges against him (sex trafficking and racketeering), that hasn't stopped the In Da Club singer from trolling the disgraced music mogul. In a recent Instagram post, the 50-year-old shared an AI-generated video of Combs walking down a catwalk while wearing a 'baby oil costume'. The video is set to the Jody2Good's song Baby Oil Freak Off Party, a track about the allegations against the I'll Be Missing You singer that was released last year after his arrest. Fifty captioned the video, 'I didn't know Diddy walked in the Michael Amiri show, when did he make Bond!' The post is a clear reference to the more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant that law enforcement seized from Combs' homes in Miami and Los Angeles. While the majority of those commenting on Fiddy's video seem to find the post funny, there are several who've taken issue with it. 'Don't you have anything better to do?? What an example for your sons,' wrote grentzcolleen. Meanwhile, misssunshine_c3 added, 'Now we believe Diddy is living rent free in your big head'. This is hardly the first time Fiddy's taken aim at Combs and those associated with him. Last month, he lashed out at Bianca Censori, Kanye West's wife, following West's appearance at Combs' trial. On Instagram, the rapper slammed both West and Censori, referencing her headline-making see-through outfit from the Grammy Awards earlier this year. 'We are wearing white in honour of the freak offs,' he wrote. 'Damn Ye, you should have brought your dirty little wife with that Grammys outfit! @50centaction.' More Trending Combs is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York, while he awaits sentencing in October. On July 2, a jury convicted the 55-year-old on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution of his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, and another woman known as Jane. He was found not guilty of racketeering conspiracy, nor was he found guilty of two charges of sex trafficking in relation to Cassie and Jane. Combs has pleaded not guilty and denied all allegations against him. Got a story? 'I'm helping Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon but I only earned £27 at recent tournament'

'I'm helping Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon but I only earned £27 at recent tournament' Adam Jones is a professional tennis player ranked 1,513th in the world - but he has a unique side job that sees him trade blows with some of the game's biggest names Adam Jones has been helping Carlos Alcaraz practice ahead of the Wimbledon final (Image: Instagram/adam_jonesyyy123 ) Carlos Alcaraz is on the cusp of securing his third consecutive Wimbledon title and etching his name amongs the gods of tennis, as he faces Jannik Sinner on Sunday. Yet, Alcaraz's practice partner is a little known Englishman who has one of professional tennis' most fascinating jobs. Adam Jones, 27, has the distinctive job of emulating the playing styles of the top players' upcoming opponents, offering them a chance to fine-tune their game before stepping onto the court for their next match. ‌ Jones, who hails from Birkenhead, Merseyside and competes on the ITF Futures Tour— the entry level for professional tennis— has been seen exchanging shots with tennis greats such as Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, 2025 women's finalist Amanda Anisimova, and Emma Raducanu. ‌ Despite his world ranking sitting at 1,513th in singles and 619th in doubles, Jones relishes his behind-the-scenes role that keeps him away from the spotlight of venues like Centre Court. Speaking to BBC Sport, Jones said: "It's a great gig and a fun way to earn some money. Whoever they're playing you try to copy their style. "With Carlos, before he played Jan-Lennard Struff, who has a massive serve, I was standing a metre inside the baseline nuking serves." Article continues below Jones as also hit with the likes of Novak Djokovic (Image: Instagram/adam_jonesyyy123 ) Jones shared the arduous path that led him to backhand with the best, recounting times when he had to sleep in a small tent on a Portuguese golf course or stay in dorms because hotel costs were out of reach, given the meagre prize money he earned. "The Futures tour is a rat race - the finances are absolutely brutal," Jones revealed. "If you lose in qualifying you get no money. A couple of weeks ago I won £27 ($37) after losing in singles quallies and then lost first round doubles - the minimum for a hotel was £110 ($150) a night. ‌ "You're losing money every single week. When people see you're a tennis player and see you're at Wimbledon, they think you have loads of money and live a luxurious life. You don't - it's the complete opposite." Wimbledon typically employs around a dozen hitting partners, who are reportedly paid a daily rate of £120 plus perks like a food allowance and access to the club's stringers and physio services. Adam Jones practiced with Emma Radcanu at this year's Wimbledon (Image: Getty Images ) ‌ Jones entered this role in 2022 and was so taken by the experience that he came back the next year. By 2024, he became the full-time practice partner for Croatia's Donna Vekic, even witnessing her charge to the semi-finals that very year. Despite his proximity to the game's heavyweights, Jones confessed to often reminiscing about his days on the Futures Tour. "It's funny," Jones said. "Because when I was travelling the world with a top star, staying in the nicest hotels and using the best facilities, I actually missed the Futures. Article continues below "I wanted to go back to the jungle and the hellholes. You've got to remember where you came from. Remember the grind." Residing in California with his girlfriend, Jones is gearing up to return stateside for a three-week stint in a Futures event in Illinois. However, he has unfinished business at the All England Club. "Next year I want to be back at Wimbledon - playing doubles. That's the goal," he said.

Swansea City owners drop huge hint over Snoop Dogg investment after shock shirt reveal The rapper was part of the club's kit launch over the weekend in a move that's got plenty of people talking Swansea City have suggested Snoop Dogg could be set for further involvement with the club (Image: Swansea City ) Swansea City's ownership group have suggested American rapper Snoop Dogg could well be set for further involvement in the club, after helping to launch their new home shirt this weekend. The Swans put social media into a frenzy by posting a picture of Snoop wearing the kit for the new season, along with a short video, with some rather predictably left speculating whether he might well be about to invest in the club. ‌ Swansea have refused to confirm whether the 53-year-old is about to buy a stake in the club, but have since hinted that he could well be involved once again in the near future. ‌ 'We appreciate the considerable interest and enthusiasm generated by Snoop Dogg's appearance in a Swansea City shirt,' Swansea City's ownership group said in a statement. 'While we are not in a position to share specifics with you all just yet, we will be able to provide more details soon and we're excited about what's to come.' It's understood the opportunity came about through a mutual connection between the ownership group and Snoop Dogg himself, who's believed to be a massive sports and football fan. Article continues below The plans to get him involved in the kit launch then gathered pace earlier this week when the schedules of the two parties allowed for a short photo and video session in Los Angeles. "Nuthin' But A Wales Thang, the Jacks are ready," the club posted on social media. "We're the Pride of Wales." ‌ Content cannot be displayed without consent In a video posted a little later on in the evening, Snoop said: "Hail to Wales and to Swansea City. It's your boy big Snoop Dogg. "Coming to a hood near you. Oh yeah, these are the new jerseys." Article continues below Swansea's new owners have been keen on raising the profile of the club in recent months, having already brought Real Madrid legend Luka Modric on board earlier this year. It's understood Modric has already had a big impact since his arrival, having even made contact with potential signings in a bid to bring them on board for the new season. What sort of role Snoop Dogg would have should he come on board remains to be seen. But his involvement in this latest episode is very much part of the same overall effort to raise Swansea's profile on the world stage.
