Inside the fizzy world of Europe's fastest-growing car brand
Remarkably, the fizzy drink didn't spring from Cupra's marketing minds, but from the department that decides things like colour and engine options.
'That was someone from the product management team saying 'I wanna work on the taste of Cupra',' Cecilia Taieb, Cupra's global director of communications, told The Business Times. 'And then he developed this. It's actually super funny because now you can buy it in any supermarket, and we sold more than we expected, you know?'
Barcelona-based Cupra isn't trying to muscle in on Red Bull's turf, but to broaden its cultural relevance. Likewise, it has partnerships with FC Barcelona and the America's Cup, and launched Cupra Design House in April.
More creative side project than business unit, it gives its car designers a chance to team up with stylists from other fields. Coming up: a collaboration with Harper Collective, the luggage firm co-founded by Jaden Smith.
Head of design Jorge Diez told BT that Cupra's desire to be different means shunning the car industry. 'I always tell my team, don't look at what the other car companies are doing,' he said. 'Do your own thing.'

Diez even sees seven-year-old Cupra's lack of history as a plus. 'We don't have heritage and sometimes for design this could be an advantage, because you can think freely about the future, you can create actually what you feel is the best for the product.'
Cupra has a startup mentality because it is the only one of Volkswagen Group's 10 brands that it actually created itself. It started life as the go-faster division of Seat, a chronically underperforming Spanish subsidiary that VW acquired in 1986. The name itself comes from 'cup racing', and for years it appeared as a badge on souped-up Seat models.
But VW spun off Cupra just as the broader car industry was mulling over the idea of trimming brands. So far, the gamble has paid off.
It sold 14,400 cars in its first year, and sales have since grown by 17 times, giving it bragging rights as Europe's fastest-growing car brand, and powering Seat to a record 633 million euros in operating profit last year. Along the way, it has also managed to woo more youthful drivers. Cupra's customers are typically 10 to 12 years younger than the average new car buyer in Europe.
'I'm lucky, because I don't have anything to protect. We've only been in the world for seven years,' Taieb said. 'Say if suddenly I do a sex toy of Cupra, there won't be all these people that say, 'Oh, my God, you're killing the brand!' No. We can fail, wake up again, and go.'
While Taieb likes to play up Cupra's rebellious spirit, she admits that VW's financial, manufacturing and technical clout, plus its extensive dealer network, made its rapid growth possible. Yet, she sees an upper limit on Cupra's size – 500,000 cars a year, or double its current volume, at which point the brand would be too mainstream.
'If you have a big family and you want to go from A to Z with a car, don't buy a Cupra,' Taieb said. 'Cupra is not for everybody to like, but for some people to love.'
Much like its gingery drink, Cupra is meant to be an acquired taste.

Life atop China's car market is starting to look shaky for BYD
LIFE at the top is proving complex for China's leading automaker, and there are fresh challenges on the horizon. BYD's monthly sales have stagnated of late and with the summer months being a traditionally slower time for consumer purchases, that trajectory isn't expected to reverse any time soon. Discounting is also now being looked sternly upon by Beijing, with China last week pledging to rein in 'irrational competition' in the electric vehicle sector, reflecting authorities' wish to tackle the deflationary price wars that are threatening economic and industrial growth. Some of BYD's international forays are also proving more challenging than expected, raising the question, is China's No. 1 automaker on shaky ground? The Shenzhen-based behemoth currently looks like it will undershoot its annual sales target for 2025, in what would be a rare miss after a multi-year bull run. The number of electric and hybrid vehicles BYD needs to sell each month through December has hit 560,000 units, in excess of levels it could hope to achieve typically in a single month. The most vehicles BYD has ever sold in a month was just shy of 515,000, in December last year. Sign Up Sign Up Analysts are now doubting whether BYD can hit 5.5 million units in 2025. Consensus estimates continue to be downgraded. Morgan Stanley last month lowered its projection to 5.3 million, pointing to a smaller number of new models, while Bloomberg Intelligence's Joanne Chen says BYD will need to sacrifice some profit and maintain its hefty discounting in the second half if it wants to stay on track. 'Regulatory scrutiny will temper direct cuts to vehicle sticker prices but competition isn't going away and retail promotions are still needed to sustain sales momentum,' she said. 'New model roll outs and steady tech upgrade are also crucial.' Bing Yuan, a fund manager at Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, said many market watchers now realistically expect sales of around 5 million. 'My sense is that is the consensus,' she said. Stripping out overseas and commercial sales, BYD's core car deliveries in China are shrinking. In June, they slipped 8 per cent year-on-year as vehicles from brands like Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, Xpeng and Xiaomi won over buyers. HSBC Holdings data show that Geely was the largest gainer of market share in the first half, while BYD was among the biggest losers. Overseas sales are faring better and those are looking on target to reach BYD's forecast of 800,000. Indeed, BYD is already almost 60 per cent of the way there. But while higher margin international sales will help BYD offset aggressive domestic discounting, some foreign markets are presenting new difficulties. BYD has grand plans for Saudi Arabia, for example, hoping to triple its footprint after Tesla entered the country. But EVs account for just over 1 per cent of total car sales in the kingdom, with high costs, sparse charging infrastructure and extreme temperatures challenging EV adoption. India, a potentially huge market, has meanwhile consistently blocked BYD's efforts to expand and despite rapid growth from a low base in Europe, there are substantial tariff headwinds and increasing competition from legacy automakers that already have consumers' trust, not to mention more extensive after-sales networks. At home, regulatory scrutiny has also intensified around BYD as it continues to be at the fore of an EV price war. In late May, it slashed prices by as much as 34 per cent, triggering renewed sector-wide discounts. Its moves were later discouraged in a veiled warning by the Chinese Communist Party's mouthpiece the People's Daily, which slammed the 'rat-race competition.' Whether Beijing can actually stop price discounting by a privately held company is a point of debate. Tianlei Huang, a China program coordinator at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said authorities may resort to administrative tools such as price reviews or cost investigations to establish a de facto price floor, or coordinate a concerted capacity reduction among leading EV makers, although he acknowledged those measures won't be easy. Regardless, BYD must be careful. As the company gears up to release first-half results later next month and July sales data within weeks, analysts will have their spreadsheets at the ready, waiting to see whether those 2025 targets look even further in the distance. With IPO in the bag, Sheffield Green plots training and listing spinoff for wind energy sector
[SINGAPORE] Getting its training centres off the ground took time and resources, but Sheffield Green is going all in on what it calls a 'new product line', with five to six centres set to be running by end-2025 – plus a potential spinoff and listing on the horizon. Sheffield Green – itself a spinoff of oil and gas recruiter Sheffield Energy – supplies manpower for the renewable energy sector, particularly in offshore wind. After its 2023 Catalist debut, the company looked to diversify and realised that it was spending heavily on third-party training for its workers. The Global Wind Organisation (GWO), a non-profit industry body, requires industry workers to be certified in basic training courses, with a mandatory refresher every two years. Having its own training centre meant Sheffield Green's manpower arm could become a client of its training arm, allowing revenue to be recognised within the group, said chief executive officer Bryan Kee. Running a centre solely for its own staff would not make financial sense, but Kee saw an opportunity. The company's existing manpower clients also needed to train their other workers, and could become paying customers of the training business. The group teamed up with a UK-based training solutions provider as a technical consultant to launch its first centre in October 2024 in Taiwan, where most of its business is based. Sign Up Sign Up Seeing firsthand the strong margins in training, Kee realised this could be a lucrative new line. Sheffield Green thus set about exploring acquisitions, snapping up a business in Spain this June; it also hired a CEO, who came on board two months ago, to run the training arm. One-stop training shop Kee explained that, because GWO-accredited training is standardised, providers have to differentiate on price or delivery. Sheffield Green's offering, while 'not the cheapest out there', was developed with a consultant that 'sets the standard' in the field, and is aimed at large corporate clients that prioritise quality over cost savings. In Taiwan, the company currently runs three courses: GWO's Basic Safety Training, Advanced Rescue Training and Basic Technical Training. Kee is looking to introduce more course types, and is in talks with one of the world's largest turbine manufacturers to add product training to the centre's list of offerings. Citing a 2024 report by the GWO and Global Wind Energy Council, he pointed out the expected global shortage of skilled technicians to support the onshore and offshore wind sector. The report noted that, by 2028, more than 532,000 new wind technicians will be needed, with 40 per cent of these roles to be filled by new entrants. 'We do not want just to be a supplier to our clients,' said Kee. 'We want to be a long-term partner.' Over in Spain, Sheffield Green's training centre already offers more than 10 courses; this expertise could be shared with its other centres. Its existing training customers could also be potential clients for Sheffield Green's recruitment business. The decision to use acquisitions to expand Sheffield Green's training facilities was also financially driven. With an already-operational centre such as the one in Spain, 'straight away, you bring in the revenue', said Kee. In contrast, it took a year of preparation before the Taiwan centre commenced operations in late January and began to generate revenue in February, though it has now broken even. In the meantime, startup costs, including for rentals and instructor training, contributed to administrative expenses and finance costs, including in the first half of the 2025 financial year. This is why the training business involves a mix of greenfield projects and acquisitions. 'We can afford it,' said Kee. In Taiwan, Sheffield Green has a term loan which will be fully repaid by March next year; in Singapore, the company has 'cash sitting in the bank', the chief executive added. For H1 FY2025 ended Dec 31, 2024, Sheffield Green's revenue slipped marginally by 2.3 per cent to US$9 million, from US$9.2 million in the same period a year earlier. Kee attributed the dip to the completion of two major projects, as payments for its manpower services are made on a recurring, 30-to-60-day basis. He noted, however, that these clients are expected to continue engaging Sheffield Green's services. Meanwhile, the cost of services grew US$0.4 million or 6.5 per cent in that half-year, in line with the general increase in labour costs, as well as accounting for one-off tax-related costs for mobilising staff across borders. While Sheffield Green had at that time borne the cost of its client in Taiwan taking the recruiter's employees across jurisdictions to service other projects, it has since engaged tax consultants to familiarise itself with different regimes and renegotiated contracts to pass on such costs. For the period, the group recorded a net profit after tax of US$101,344, down from US$474,840 in H1 FY2024. Adding more facilities Based on May data, training now contributes up to 10 per cent of the group's revenue, Kee said. 'For a training business, the Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) can go as high as 40 per cent, depending on how you manage the training centre.' He added that the premises and equipment are a one-time investment. While funds are needed for things such as maintaining equipment, rental and utility bills, instructor costs and support roles, these are not too costly. Beyond the two training centres in Taiwan and Germany, Sheffield Green is also exploring the acquisition of UK-based training solutions provider Advanced Blade Repair Services, which Kee hopes to be finalised by end-August. In February this year, it entered into a joint venture (JV) in Malaysia to set up and run a centre in Sarawak. The JV partner has bought the land for the development, and they target to have the centre operational in about 10 months, Kee noted. Whether Sheffield Green builds from scratch or buys depends on several factors, including market maturity and the availability of acquisition targets. In the UK, a mature market, there are a hundred big and small players already, Kee pointed out. 'Why should I be number 101?' But in Sarawak, where options are limited, he added that there is 'still room for me to play'. Deciding where to base the training centres is not solely about where labour is needed, but also takes into account where international companies source their hires. Kee said that Malaysia, the Philippines and India are key labour export markets, thanks to their lower cost. In addition to the centres already in the works, Sheffield Green is considering acquiring two more from a training solutions provider in the Baltics. 'By the end of this year easily, we will have at least five to six training centres that will be generating revenue,' said Kee. Once that is all in place, the group plans to explore spinning off the training business and taking it public. 'If you ask me what's the long-term plan, this (training) business will be standalone,' he continued. While Sheffield Green would remain its biggest shareholder, it would also be able to service its competitors as an independent training partner, said Kee. The group is also considering two further greenfield projects in South Korea and Saudi Arabia, though these may not happen this year, as it plans to wait until the Malaysian greenfield centre is up and running. Industry headwinds While the offshore wind industry is still expected to grow significantly, it has seen recent setbacks. US President Donald Trump's administration is attempting to stymie support for renewable energy sources, disrupting progress in offshore wind. While Sheffield Green supplies manpower for several US-based offshore wind projects, it had held off on previously announced plans for a US office when a second Trump term seemed possible. 'There are plenty of other places I can focus (on),' Kee said. 'The capital (leaving the US) will go somewhere else for investment,' he noted, naming Australia as one potential beneficiary. 'So we are looking seriously at Australia as a market itself.' And although macroeconomic challenges and underdeveloped infrastructure have led to several high-profile offshore wind project cancellations in various countries, Kee believes that there are 'still very good markets'. In the UK, for example, oil and gas companies 'are all dying' despite there being abundant oil in the North Sea, as the government is 'pushing everything into offshore wind'. So whether individual countries' governments are supportive of the renewables shift is an important factor that can help the industry weather the storm, he said. In the close to two years since its listing, Sheffield Green's share price has not been able to reach its initial public offering (IPO) price of S$0.25 per share. Asked what he would say to potential shareholders, Kee replied: 'Definitely, I think, with the diversification that we have with training… gradually that will contribute to the group, that will push up the profitability of the company.' The company has remained profitable since going public, and has continued to pay dividends, he added. 'We will still continue to do that.'

Money in, promises out: Red flags in Vietnam's PE and VC dealmaking
[HO CHI MINH CITY] A planned stake sale by shareholders of EQuest Education, one of Vietnam's biggest private education groups, is facing setbacks after a school acquisition in Hanoi collapsed, in a case highlighting the broader risks of doing business in the country's fast-growing, but often unpredictable, business sector. KKR, the largest shareholder with a 54.8 per cent stake in EQuest, held through its Singapore-based vehicle Equinox II, invested more than US$200 million into the Vietnamese group in two funding rounds in 2021 and 2023. The PE juggernaut and other shareholders of EQuest were eyeing a stake sale this year, in hopes of raising funds and paving the way for KKR's exit four to five years since its investment in EQuest, sources familiar with the matter told The Business Times. That plan now hangs in limbo. The dispute has delayed negotiations and the due diligence process, causing uncertainties, particularly over valuation-related matters, a source noted. KKR did not respond to BT's queries. In 2021, a member company of EQuest signed deals worth one trillion dong (S$49 million) to acquire 80 per cent stakes in two schools in Hanoi. At the time, EQuest had already consolidated some 20 education institutions in Vietnam. Sign Up Sign Up The schools were part of the Ngoi Sao school system, a prominent private education network co-founded by Pham Bich Nga, a 66-year-old educator. The transaction for the second school, which was established in 2023, hit a deadlock. In a statement issued on Wednesday (Jul 16), EQuest alleged that Nga and her team withdrew funds from the first school and declined to transfer the agreed stake and management control of the second school. EQuest said it has lodged a police report on the matter, alleging embezzlement, misappropriation and fraud. In a Facebook post on Jul 16, Nguyen Quoc Toan, co-founder, chairman and chief executive of EQuest Education, alleged that the former partners claimed they 'did not understand' or had a 'different interpretation' of the contract, while retaining all the investor's funds over the past few years to develop the schools. A day earlier on Jul 15, Nga wrote on Facebook that she had proactively ended the partnership, citing major differences in educational direction and operational culture during their 2022 collaboration. 'Trying to forcibly maintain a partnership when the other party no longer wishes to continue – or attempting to claim what doesn't belong to them – cannot lead to a positive outcome for either side,' she wrote. Familiar red flags The case underscores the travails of doing business in Vietnam, which experts warn could weigh on investor confidence and undermine dealmaking in the long term. In fact, observers say disputes after deal closure between investors and Vietnamese target firms are fairly common, especially in PE and VC circles; legal experts cite mismatched expectations and poor mutual understanding as key sources of friction. David Harrison, a partner for global law firm Hogan Lovells in Ho Chi Minh City, said: 'We do a lot of transactions with Vietnamese targets – family businesses in many cases – where there's no law firm on the other side to help them understand what they're signing.' They may be eager to close the deal and secure cash for their business by taking a pragmatic view, which, in the long run, may not serve their best interests, he added. Tran Duy Canh, managing partner at Dentons LuatViet in Ho Chi Minh City, said post-deal disputes often arise when critical conditions in sale agreements are not met. These do not always arise out of bad faith; more often, it comes from 'overconfidence' or misunderstanding, he said, adding that some local firms assume they can sort things out later or renegotiate if the deal veers off course. One notable case involved Vietnamese plastics firm Rang Dong and Japanese investor Sojitz Pla-Net, over a 2017 deal in which Sojitz bought five million shares in Rang Dong's Long An Plastic unit for more than 174 billion dong. Sojitz later alleged that Rang Dong failed to meet post-closing obligations. On its part, the Vietnamese firm claimed that there were 'unreasonable' terms in the contract, such as requiring it to sign employment contracts with 700 people that Sojitz appointed. Their conflict lasted about three years, from 2020 to 2023, including arbitration at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre in 2022 and subsequent onshore court proceedings in Vietnam. The ruling ultimately went Sojitz's way. However, it remains uncertain whether Rang Dong can fulfil its financial obligations to Sojitz, because the Vietnamese company is now facing bankruptcy proceedings. Lessons from soured deals Such cases worry investors, who often bear the bulk of financial losses and face lengthy investigations and legal battles. Legal counsel typically recommend mediation over taking the matter to court, especially when both sides genuinely want to resolve the misunderstanding. Another high-profile case was VinaCapital's Vietnam Opportunity Fund (VOF) investing US$32.5 million for a 34 per cent stake in Vietnamese egg and poultry giant Ba Huan in early 2018. The deal quickly unravelled after founder Pham Thi Huan publicly sought to cancel it, claiming the investor's terms risked eroding family control. She claimed VinaCapital imposed a 22 per cent annual return rate without consent, and that the Vietnamese contract included clauses missing from the English version, such as penalties for missed targets and a possible transfer of at least 51 per cent of the company's shares. VinaCapital maintained that all terms were lawful and in line with market norms, but later agreed to an amicable exit from the deal. Vu Nguyen Khanh, managing director and lead portfolio manager at VinaCapital's VOF, told BT: 'We may have a very clear view of what those terms mean, but at the same time, we want to make sure that the person on the other side of the table also understands that.' Founded in 2003 and managed by VinaCapital, VOF is a closed-ended investment trust listed on the London Stock Exchange with net assets exceeding US$970 million as at the end of June; it invests in listed equities and private companies in Vietnam. Khanh said the fund has invested in more than 200 companies in Vietnam over the past two decades. Harrison from Hogan Lovells stressed the importance of robust financial, legal and technical due diligence and forging direct ties with local partners, rather than relying on 30- to 40-page term sheets drafted for deals in other markets. He also highlighted the value of including downside protection mechanisms for investors – in the form of put rights, redemption rights, pull-back clauses, or earn-outs, for example – in case deals do not go as expected. 'The diligence, monitoring and the engagement process throughout the investment should pick up a lot of the flags,' VOF's Khanh added. He said if a situation calls for renegotiation, the first step should be to revisit the original agreements, which ought to include an avenue to resolve the issues before turning to the court. 'At the end of the day, our objective as investors is to create value and exit at a return. Disputes rarely create that kind of return,' he noted. Cultural gaps Hoang Minh Duc, special counsel at Duane Morris Vietnam, said investors are usually open to dialogue if founders stay transparent and actively work towards the best solutions for the businesses when obligations become difficult to meet. Drawing on his experience advising deals between foreign VCs and Vietnamese startups, he said many disputes stem from cultural gaps between Vietnamese business norms and those in more developed markets. He noted that Vietnamese startup founders often sign agreements without fully grasping the terms, sometimes without legal counsel or under guidance by inexperienced advisors. And when problems arise, some try to sidestep the investors. 'Vietnamese founders often value flexibility, while most venture capital investors, many of whom are from Singapore, prioritise transparency and an agreed structure,' he said, adding: 'This cultural gap can lead to painful partings, which may ultimately undermine dealmaking in Vietnam over the long term.'
