Land routes barred for Arbaeen pilgrims amid security concerns
The Pakistani government has imposed a ban on overland travel to Iran and Iraq for Arbaeen pilgrims, citing national security and public safety concerns.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced that pilgrims will now only be allowed to travel to the holy sites in Iran and Iraq by air. 'Pilgrims will not be permitted to use road routes to Iraq and Iran,' he said in a message shared on social media.
'This decision has been made in view of public safety and national security,' the minister added, stating that the ban was finalised after consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Balochistan government, and security agencies.

To accommodate the change, the federal government has decided to increase the number of flights. 'Under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's directive, more flights will be arranged for Arbaeen pilgrims,' Naqvi said, noting that maximum possible flight capacity will be ensured.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced a special flight operation for Arbaeen starting August 8. Outbound flights from Pakistan to Najaf will operate from August 8 to 11, while return flights from Najaf to Pakistan are scheduled for August 18 to 23.

PIA has set the fare at USD 675 per passenger for the special Arbaeen operation. However, many intending pilgrims have urged PIA to reduce the fare and introduce additional flights to meet high demand during the religious occasion.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Pakistani pilgrims travel overland to Najaf via Iran. The sudden ban on road travel is expected to significantly affect travel logistics, especially for those unable to afford air travel.

Govt bars pilgrims from traveling to Iran, Iraq by road this Arbaeen
Pakistani pilgrims will not be allowed to travel to Iran and Iraq by road for the Arbaeen pilgrimage due to public and national security, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Sunday. 'After extensive consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, [the] Balochistan Government, and security agencies, it has been decided that zaireen (pilgrims) will not be allowed to travel to Iraq and Iran by road for Arbaeen this year,' Naqvi said on X. The minister said that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and national security. He added that the intending pilgrims will be able to travel by air. Naqvi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the authorities concerned to arrange maximum flights in the coming days to facilitate pilgrims travelling for Arbaeen. PM Shehbaz directs assistance for protection of Pakistani pilgrims in Iran His remarks followed a briefing to the prime minister earlier in the day on the new pilgrimage management policy, according to a report by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP). As part of broader reforms, the government plans to implement a new travel management system effective January 1, 2026. Visa-free entry begins for diplomatic, official passport holders between Pakistan, UAE
Citizens of Pakistan and the UAE — holding a diplomatic or official passport — no longer need a visa to travel to each other's country and this new policy has now officially started. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced that a visa waiver agreement between Pakistan and the UAE is now in effect. The agreement, which waives visa requirements for diplomatic and official passport holders from both countries, was signed with his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on June 24, he said. The agreement has come into effect 30 days later, on July 25, and is now being implemented at all airports in both the UAE and Pakistan. In a post on X, FM Dar said: 'In my meeting at Abu Dhabi on 24th June 2025 with my brother Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of UAE, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, we agreed mutual visa waivers on diplomatic and official passports between our two brotherly countries and we both signed a Memorandum of Understanding to make this arrangement effective and operative after 30days of the signing of the said MoU.
