Uruguay Central Bank Surprises With Quarter-Point Rate Cut

Bloomberg08-07-2025
Uruguay's central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to 9% and signaled it might further lower borrowing costs if inflation converges with the target.
'As long as inflation evolves as expected and agents' expectations continue to decline, the BCU believes there could be room to continue lowering the interest rate,' the central bank said in a statement.

Treasury Yields Rise in July as Fed Cut Seen Elusive

1538 ET – Treasury yields rise for the month as markets grow more concerned about the impact of tariffs and the Fed looks increasingly unlikely to cut interest rates soon. Economists surveyed by WSJ expect July's jobs report tomorrow to print 100,000, down from June's 147,000, with unemployment rising to 4.2% from 4.1%. August payrolls will also be published before the next Fed meeting. Markets are pricing another hold, according to CME. Inflation is expected to remain sticky. Nuveen forecasts July core CPI, due August 12, at 2.9%. The 10-year rises 0.133 percentage point in July, to 4.360%. The two-year adds 0.230 p.p. to 3.952%. ( @ptrevisani) 0909 ET – Fresh U.S. labor and inflation data support a longer Fed hold, but Treasury yields struggle to recover from an overnight decline. June's 12-month PCE inflation accelerates to 2.6% from 2.4% in May. Weekly jobless claims tick higher to 218,000 from 217,000. In other words, inflation remains above target and employment isn't collapsing. The Fed held rates unchanged yesterday, as expected, and Chair Powell said data will drive its next decision, in September. Another hold is priced at 61% odds, according to CME. The 10-year yield is at 4.347% and the two-year at 3.938%. ( @ptrevisani)
