
Perseid Meteor Shower Begins Next Week — When To Get The Best View

Under a moonless dark sky away from light pollution, the Perseids can produce up to 75 meteors per hour on the peak night — more than one meteor per minute.
This year, an 84%-lit moon will rise shortly after it gets dark on Aug.12 and remain in the night sky all night. The moonlight will significantly reduce the number of meteors visible, though the moon will remain rather low on the southern horizon.
Although rates are likely to be vastly reduced, the Perseids do produce some bright 'fireballs' that ought to still be visible, if skies are clear. There will be a short window of opportunity in the evening of Aug. 15 to watch for Perseids in moonless night skies, though since the Perseids have a steep peak and trough, don't expect to see more than a handful of shooting stars.
Perseid meteors move very fast, striking Earth's upper atmosphere at around 133,000 mph. That can sometimes cause a bright flash and a long trail that's visible for a split second.
The Perseids are caused by dust particles from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which last visited the inner solar system in 1992. It takes 133 years to orbit the sun.
Seeing a 'shooting star' requires patience — and for the Persieds in 2025, perhaps even more than usual. The best way to watch a meteor shower is to get out of the city, away from urban light pollution, according to NASA, such as a Dark Sky Place or somewhere found by using a light pollution map. Once in-situ, allow at least 20-30 minutes for your eyes to adjust before you start to wonder where the meteors are. Tuesday, Aug. 12, is marked in the calendars of skywatchers for something other than the peak of the Perseid meteor shower this year. Rise an hour before sunrise and look to the east-northeast to see Venus and Jupiter less than a degree apart — the width of a finger held at arm's length against the sky.
The Perseids are the most popular meteor shower of the year in the Northern Hemisphere because they peak during August, when camping trips are popular and practical. However, the strongest meteor shower of the year is December's Gemini meteor shower. Running from Dec. 7 through Dec. 17 and peaking overnight on Dec. 13-14 this year, the Geminids can produce up to 120 meteors per hour at their peak. This year, that peak will occur in a moonless night sky, with only a slim waning crescent moon rising in the early hours of Dec. 14. NASA's four Artemis II astronauts are continuing to train hard for the adventure of a lifetime, which is set to take place in a little over six months from now. The American space agency this week shared on update on the crewmembers' progress toward the launch of a voyage that will take them around the moon before returning to Earth. Recommended Videos NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, recently participated in a crew equipment interface test that involved performing launch day and simulated orbital activities inside Orion while wearing their spacesuits. The special training session took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, from where NASA's SLS rocket will power the Orion spacecraft and the crew toward the moon next year, possibly in April. 'Once in Orion, the crew performed several launch day activities, including communications checkouts and suit leak checks,' NASA said. 'For the first time, the crew was connected to the spacecraft and its communications and life control systems, and all umbilicals were connected while the spacecraft operated on full power.' To give the astronauts a feel of what to expect during their 10-day mission, they experienced various simulated ground and flight conditions. Some of the activities also included scenarios where the crew had to deal with potential issues while in space such as leaks and the failure of the air revitalization system fan, a vital mechanism for providing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the astronauts' cabin. 'Getting this hands-on experience and learning how to act fast to overcome potential challenges during flight helps ensure the crew is ready for any scenario,' NASA said. The crew was officially selected and announced in April 2023. At the time, the Artemis mission was set for launch in September 2025, but the date slipped due to technical and safety issues that required more time to resolve. The Artemis II voyage will follow the path of Artemis I. The uncrewed test flight launched in November 2022 and sent Orion within just 80 miles (about 130 km) of the lunar surface. 'In about six months, Artemis II astronauts will journey around the moon for the first time in 53 years,' acting NASA chief Sean Duffy said. 'America rallied behind Apollo because it represented the best of us — now it's Artemis' turn. They're not just carrying a flag — they're carrying the pride, power, and promise of the United States of America.' Duffy added: 'Every milestone in the Artemis campaign brings us closer to landing Americans back on the moon and pushing onward to Mars.' The Artemis III mission, which is currently set for no earlier than mid-2027, will put the first astronauts on the lunar surface since 1972.

Officials stunned by drastic transformation in Great Salt Lake over summer months: 'We're sitting at … a scary low level' Utah's Great Salt Lake has alarmingly low water levels amid drought conditions, The Salt Lake Tribune reports, and it's not the first time in recent years that officials have raised alarms. What's happening? According to the Tribune, Great Salt Lake water levels are currently approaching a "record-low" elevation last recorded back in 2022. That reporting cited a November 2022 article about the saltwater lake's imminent "ecological collapse." Biology professor Bonnie Baxter of Westminster College's Great Salt Lake Institute spoke to the outlet about conditions at the lake. "We don't have clouds of flies around our ankles anymore. The flies don't look right. They're small. They're behaving funny," Baxter said at the time. In 2023, researchers at Brigham Young University called for "emergency measures" to prevent the lake's ecosystem from inevitable collapse. Their predictions were startling — without intervention, they estimated the Great Salt Lake would dry up by 2028. Statewide, Utah has endured drought and hot, dry weather, exacerbating the ongoing issue. On July 29, Great Salt Lake Commissioner Brian Steed was blunt about the implications of low water levels. "In truth, we're sitting at, really, a scary low level," Steed admitted. Why are low water levels so 'scary'? Back in 2022, Baxter explained a bit about how low water levels had already adversely impacted the Great Salt Lake ecosystem and affected some of its key native species, brine shrimp and brine flies. Back in 2023, NPR reported that environmental conditions and poor air quality had begun to affect residents living near the lake, where higher rates of cardiovascular disease and asthma were observed. What's being done about it? One bright spot in years of reporting on the rapid evaporation of Utah's Great Salt Lake is that officials and state lawmakers remain in bipartisan agreement about the need to act. On Thursday, Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz signaled that a special session to address the crisis would likely occur in the fall. Schultz alluded to introducing "some additional tools to the toolbox to help the ecosystem on the south arm." Conservation measures are in effect in the area, and Newsweek contacted Steed's office for information on how locals can act to preserve the Great Salt Lake. A representative said cutting down on outdoor watering remains the "single biggest opportunity for conservation." Residents were also advised to monitor indoor water use and to consider "water-efficient appliances" when possible. Sadly, NASA's Lunar Trailblazer failed to do what it said on the tin
NASA has given up trying to reestablish contact with a small spacecraft that launched in February to map lunar water. The Lunar Trailblazer hitched a ride on the second Intuitive Machines robotic lunar lander mission, IM-2, which launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on February 26, 2025. Recommended Videos The spacecraft separated as planned from the rocket about 48 minutes after launch, and the mission team established communications with it about 10 minutes later. But contact was lost the following day and was never reestablished, preventing them team from performing the necessary thruster operations to keep the spacecraft on its flight trajectory toward the moon. And on Monday, NASA said the mission was officially over. The space agency added that from the limited data it had received, it appeared that the spacecraft's solar arrays had failed to properly orient toward the sun, causing its batteries to lose power. 'While it was not the outcome we had hoped for, mission experiences like Lunar Trailblazer help us to learn and reduce the risk for future, low-cost small satellites to do innovative science as we prepare for a sustained human presence on the moon,' Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said in a release, adding: 'Thank you to the Lunar Trailblazer team for their dedication in working on and learning from this mission through to the end.' The goal of the mission was to create high-resolution maps of water on the moon's surface. It could also have revealed what form the water is in, the amount present, and how it changes over time. NASA said the the maps built by the Lunar Trailblazer would also have supported future robotic missions and human exploration of the moon. More broadly, the endeavor could have helped scientists to better understand water cycles on airless bodies in our solar system. In an effort to save the spacecraft, a number of organizations around the world had been listening for the the Lunar Trailblazer's radio signal while also tracking its position. But data from ground radar and optical observations indicated that Lunar Trailblazer was in a slow spin and heading deeper into space. While the team had been hoping that the solar panels might receive sunlight and charge the batteries with enough power to turn on the radio and give it a chance of making contact, it never happened, and the Lunar Spacecraft is now too distant to save.
