KSRTC clears 104 tonnes legacy waste

Time of India3 days ago
Thiruvananthapuram: As part of the state govt's waste-free Nava Keralam people's campaign, KSRTC is promoting waste-free operations across all its units in collaboration with the Haritha Keralam Mission.
So far, 86 depots have received recognition and certification from the Haritha Keralam Mission for their waste management practices.
KSRTC has handed over 104 tonnes of accumulated waste—including rexine, plastic, and e-waste—from its depots and workshops to the Clean Kerala Company. To ensure accountability and transparency in waste removal, a gate pass system has been introduced.
In addition to waste management, beautification efforts are also underway at bus stations.
To monitor the type and volume of waste removed and to check for any remaining waste, KSRTC has developed and implemented an online data entry system. Awareness posters and training sessions have been organized for employees and the public in coordination with the Haritha Keralam Mission.
To curb littering at bus stations, KSRTC has launched the 'Depot Security 360' project, which involves the installation of comprehensive CCTV surveillance systems—including coverage of blind spots—across all depots in the state.

Waste bins are also being installed to encourage proper disposal of waste. Around 600 bins have been placed at various bus stations, and an additional 2,000 bins are being installed on KSRTC buses. This initiative is being implemented with the support of a private financial institution. The waste collected from these bins will be segregated and processed at bus stations before being handed over to the Haritha Karma Sena for disposal.
KSRTC authorities said the waste-free drive—conducted in partnership with Haritha Keralam Mission, Sanitation Mission, Clean Kerala Company, and local self-government bodies—has received strong support from both employees and passengers.

Ashada Friday: Separate queue for devotees climbing steps

The district administration and the Chamundeshwari Temple Development Authority have made elaborate arrangements for the second Ashada Friday rituals atop the Chamundi Hill to facilitate smooth darshan for devotees who will throng the hill from the early hours. Based on feedback from the devotees last Friday, the authorities have arranged a separate queue for devotees climbing the hill via steps. This queue will subsequently merge with the 'dharma darshan' queue near the temple. Anticipating an equally large turnout this Friday, special measures have been planned to ensure an orderly visit for all devotees. According to the police, devotees who wish to climb the hill using the steps this Friday can do so only between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., and they have been asked to assemble around 5 a.m. Those arriving earlier will not be allowed to begin the climb. The window to climb the steps will close at 6 a.m. Even vehicles near the steps will not be permitted. Last week, many devotees had gathered as early as 1 a.m. to climb the steps. The district administration said that around 15,000 devotees can stand in different queues outside the temple at one stretch, and all will be allowed to enter the temple premises for darshan when their turn comes. Therefore, considering the space available inside and outside the temple complex, devotees have been urged to cooperate and follow guidelines to ensure a safe and hassle-free darshan. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will provide a free bus service from the foothill to the temple from early morning. Police personnel, staff, and volunteers have been deployed to manage the crowd.

T Nagar flyover delayed again; deadline now Sept

Chennai: Despite earlier promises, the 1.2-km-long T Nagar flyover project missed yet another deadline, pushing completion to Sept. The latest holdup is that Greater Chennai Corporation says it is unable to procure "interblocks" pre-cast concrete units used to link sections of bridges and ensure uniform surface continuity to connect the old Usman Road bridge with the newly built CIT Nagar structure. Originally slated for completion in Dec 2024, the 131-crore project was later promised for May 2025 by municipal administration minister K N Nehru in the state budget. Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar now, however, says it will be ready by Aug, while the contractor claims a more realistic timeline is the end of September. On Wednesday, the corporation released drone images of the flyover, claiming that only blacktopping, streetlight installation, and median work remain. But a ground visit by TOI showed otherwise. Key structural work particularly connecting the old and new flyovers near Ranganathan Street was not yet carried out. Downramps at that end are also missing. A contractor at the site cited a shortage of interblocks as the reason for the delay. With no exit via Usman Road, ambulances and residents are forced to use the Duraisamy subway. "The subway is congested even during normal hours. With additional diverted traffic, it's become worse," a resident of Rameshwaram Street said. "We're pushing the contractor to speed up," said Sudhakar, superintending engineer of GCC's bridges department. "We aim to complete it by Aug, subject to material availability." A local, S Manikandan, said, "With all the technical advancements, it's baffling how GCC has taken nearly 10 months to raise just nine pillars." The flyover, which spans major junctions South Usman Road-Burkit Road and Madley Road, South Usman Road-South West Boag Road and New Boag Road, and the CIT Nagar North Road T-junction is designed as a two-lane structure with a width of 8.4m. It includes a 140-metre up-ramp at CIT Nagar Main Road, a 120-metre up-ramp at Usman Road, and a 100-metre down-ramp. Once completed, it aims to allow motorists from Anna Salai to bypass Panagal Park junction within minutes.
