Penang factory manager falls for fake US businessman, loses RM300,000 in Facebook romance scam
GEORGE TOWN, June 27 — An analysis manager at a factory in Bayan Baru, here, lost RM300,000 after falling victim to a love scam through social media.
Penang Police deputy chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the incident began when the 45-year-old woman became acquainted with a man claiming to be an American citizen via Facebook in November last year.
He said not long after, they started communicating via WhatsApp after the man allegedly expressed a desire to pursue a serious relationship with the victim.
'The suspect introduced himself as a businessman in the field of information technology (IT), claiming to be operating a business in a foreign country.
'After a month of getting to know one another, the suspect told the victim that his bank account had been frozen in that country and asked for her help to make payments for the delivery of important stock related to his business,' he said in a statement today.
Mohd Alwi said the suspect promised to repay the money and even offered additional payment as a token of appreciation to convince the victim.
Lured by the online romance and trusting the suspect, the woman then made 16 transactions to five different bank accounts between December 12 and 14, 2024.
However, the victim realised that she had been scammed when the suspect asked for more money, allegedly to cover his travel expenses to visit her in Malaysia. He also sent her a tampered photo of a passport.
Mohd Alwi said the woman lodged a police report at the Barat Daya police headquarters yesterday.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama

The collision on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding, involved a total of 48 victims, 13 of whom died at the scene and two others at the hospital. On June 20, road transport department (JPJ) director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said JPJ is finalising investigation papers for possible legal action against the bus operator and company. He said the papers will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for a decision on potential charges.

Melaka boy, 11, suffers head injury after father allegedly throws chair over lukewarm ‘kopi O'
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Authorities have confirmed that an 11-year-old boy sustained a head injury after he was allegedly struck by a chair thrown by his father after the child served coffee that was deemed not hot enough. According to MalaysiaGazette, Melaka state executive councillor for women, family and community development, Datuk Kalsom Noordin, said the incident occurred when the boy was home alone with his father. His mother was at work at the time. 'The father asked the child to prepare a cup of hot kopi O. When the drink was not hot enough, he became angry after the boy insisted he had already heated it. 'Frustrated and disbelieving, the father threw a chair, which hit the boy's head,' she reportedly said. Kalsom added the man later cleaned the wound, and the boy only told his mother what had happened when she returned home. The child was first taken to a clinic in Cheng but was referred to Melaka Hospital due to the clinic's lack of X-ray and CT scan facilities. 'Scans at the hospital showed no serious injuries,' she added. She also said officers from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) would visit the family's home on Monday to record statements and assess the next course of action.

New Zealand woman injured after 6m fall at Kanching Waterfall
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — A 52-year-old New Zealand woman was injured after falling from a height of about six metres at Kanching Waterfall in Rawang today. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said an emergency call was received at 11.52am. 'A team from the Rawang Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene,' he said in a statement. 'The victim, a New Zealand national, had fallen from the waterfall from a height of approximately six metres.' He said initial checks found that the woman sustained injuries to her left leg, left arm and spine. The victim was conscious and taken to hospital for further treatment.
