During its participation in the official side event of the COSP18 conference in New York, the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO) highlighted inspiring stories, innovative solutions, and called for inclusive and comprehensive partnerships.
The Organisation reaffirmed its leadership in bringing the UAE's experience in empowering and integrating People of Determination to global forums, through its active participation in the official side event at the 18th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP18), held at the United Nations headquarters in New York under the theme: 'Empowering Inclusive Development through Disability-Inclusive Action and Effective Partnerships.'
During the session, organised by the ZHO in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations and Rehabilitation International, a distinguished group of decision-makers, experts, and activists from around the world gathered.
The Organisation delivered a global call to action for joint work, continued collaboration, transcending borders, and fostering inclusion and empowerment for People of Determination in every aspect.
It also conveyed a clear message to the world: empowerment only happens through partnership, and the future cannot be truly inclusive unless all people, in all their diversity, are at the centre of policies and programmes.
During the session, the ZHO announced the launch of the International Journal of Disability and Rehabilitation Studies, a specialised research platform that enhances the scientific impact to serve People of Determination globally. Established in partnership with Rehabilitation International, the journal aims to promote impactful scientific research that makes a difference in the lives of People of Determination worldwide.
In his recorded opening remarks, Abdullah Al Humaidan, Secretary-General of the ZHO and Vice President of Rehabilitation International for the MENA Region, emphasised the importance of collective action to enhance inclusion across borders from the UAE to the world.
He stated, 'Our participation in this event reflects the UAE's unwavering commitment to making inclusion and integration a sustainable approach that guarantees equal opportunities for People of Determination to participate, excel, and lead. At the ZHO, we believe that inclusion is not optional, it is essential to build a more just and sustainable future.'

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): New initiative to eliminate Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in children ‘a beacon of hope'

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has launched a bold new national initiative aimed at eliminating AIDS among children by 2030 – a move hailed by the United Nations as 'a beacon of hope' amid growing global funding constraints. 'Our country can no longer tolerate children being born and growing up with HIV, when tools exist to prevent, detect and effectively treat this infection,' President Félix Tshisekedi declared at a recent government conference in the south-eastern Lualaba province, as he launched the five-year initiative. Backed by an initial commitment of $18 million in national funds, the Presidential Initiative to End Pediatric AIDS will focus on political leadership, systems strengthening and inclusive healthcare access particularly for children, adolescents, and pregnant women. It also aligns well with DRC's global commitments under the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. Children lagging behind The initiative marks a renewed commitment by the DRC to address children's extremely limited access to HIV prevention and treatment services. While the DRC has made notable strides in adult HIV response – 91 per cent of adults living with HIV now have access to antiretroviral treatment – children continue to lag far behind. Only 44 per cent of children living with HIV in the country currently receive lifesaving treatment, a figure that has remained unchanged for over a decade. Every year, thousands of Congolese children are still infected, often due to a lack of screening among pregnant women, depriving the health system of a crucial opportunity to prevent mother-to-child transmission as well as saving the mother's live. 'The eradication of paediatric AIDS is a moral imperative, an imperative of social justice and an indicator of dignity,' Mr. Tshisekedi said. Four core priorities The Presidential Initiative targets four core areas: Improving early detection and treatment of HIV for children, adolescents and pregnant women Preventing new infections in children, adolescents and mothers Guarantee systematic and immediate treatment for those diagnosed Remove structural barriers hindering young people's access to health services A breath of fresh air The UN Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) praised the initiative as an example of the national leadership needed to close critical gaps in global HIV response. Susan Kasedde, UNAIDS Country Director in the DRC, commended the initiative as 'a breath of fresh air' at a time when global development financing is under strain. 'At a time when development financing is experiencing turbulence and risk jeopardizing the systems that support the most vulnerable, President Tshisekedi's leadership initiative is a beacon of hope,' she said. According to UNAIDS, recent funding cuts are threatening critical HIV services, with stock of medication and condoms feared to run out within months. Key areas like antenatal testing, paediatric treatment and data quality monitoring have also been impacted. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of UN News.

More than 71 killed in Gaza by Israeli strikes, including 50 waiting for aid

The death toll from Israeli strikes on Gaza this morning continues to rise dramatically. Gaza hospital sources told Al Jazeera Arabic that Israeli forces have killed 71 Palestinians since dawn Tuesday, including 50 who were waiting to receive aid. Separately, 25 Palestinians died after Israeli fire struck near aid centres north of Rafah, according to ambulance and emergency officials. Earlier today we reported that the United Nations strongly condemned the 'weaponisation of food' in Gaza, warning that such actions by Israel's military amount to a war crime.

Abu Dhabi hosts 2-day oncology conference

The third edition of the Best of ASCO UAE Conference opened on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. Organised by SEHA, part of the PureHealth Group, in collaboration with Tawam Hospital, the event is taking place at Dusit Thani Hotel and continues until Sunday June 23, bringing together a distinguished line-up of oncology experts from around the world. Held under licence from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the conference features more than 70 international, regional and local speakers, including oncology leaders from across the Gulf Cooperation Council and the UAE. The programme includes over 70 scientific papers that have significantly influenced oncology treatment strategies this year. Professor Julie Gralow, Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of ASCO, told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the annual ASCO meeting highlighted key developments, including the use of circulating tumour DNA for diagnosis and the role of artificial intelligence in supporting pathologists with more accurate tumour assessments. Gralow emphasised the importance of healthy lifestyle habits in improving patient outcomes, citing a recent randomised study that found regular exercise following a colon cancer diagnosis led to reduced recurrence and mortality rates. She underscored the benefits of combining physical activity with a balanced diet and weight loss to enhance treatment effectiveness. She also highlighted rapid advances in immunotherapy, particularly in antibody-drug conjugates and immune checkpoint inhibitors, which are now being used in new therapeutic indications and earlier stages of cancer. On the subject of precision medicine, Gralow explained that the approach aims to identify molecular mutations that transform cells into cancerous forms and to develop treatments that precisely target those mutations. Many such targeted therapies have demonstrated efficacy in treating abnormal cancer-causing cells. Dr. Khalid Saeed Balaraj, Chair of the Oncology Centre at Tawam Hospital, and Vice-Chair of the Conference, said the event includes more than seven specialist scientific workshops designed for junior doctors. These sessions aim to equip them for future roles in cancer care and provide valuable opportunities for direct engagement with leading international oncology researchers. WAM
