3D printing: A new horizon for local economy

In year 2006, the movie 'Mission: Impossible III' featured a 3D printed mask fabricated based on a 3D scan of Phillip Hoffman's character for Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt to wear. The three-dimensional (3D) printing has leapt from science fiction to factory floors and even into our homes during the last decades. This transformative technology has enabled people from students to surgeons, to produce objects with unprecedented ease and customization.
From Bones to Buildings: Real-World Wonders
One of the most impactful applications of 3D printing is in the medical field. Doctors today use 3D-printed titanium plates and polymer-based splints for complex fractures such as skull and hip, improving recovery and comfort. The field of organ printing is pushing scientific boundaries even further. Researchers have successfully printed human tissues like liver and skin using bio-inks made from living cells experimentally, paving the way for future on-demand organ replacements.
In aerospace, companies like General Electric (GE) have been printing fuel nozzles for jet engine that are 25% lighter and five times more durable than conventionally manufactured ones. In space exploration, an American aerospace startup, has successfully launched a rocket made almost entirely from 3D-printed components in 2023, cutting down production time from years to weeks.
In the culinary world, 3D-printed food is transforming how meals are made. Machines can now print chocolate, pasta and plant-based meats. In Bristol, scientists have developed 3D-printed meals with customized textures and nutrition for patients with dysphagia, a medical condition that makes swallowing difficult.
On the larger scale, construction firms in the Netherlands, China and Dubai have completed full-scale buildings using giant 3D concrete printers. This technology offers potential solutions to housing shortages by reducing labour and material costs significantly.
Accessible Technology for All
The widespread availability of 3D printers today is largely thanks to the expiration of two major patents: fused deposition modeling (FDM) and stereolithography apparatus (SLA). These advancements have driven down the cost of printers and opened the doors to schools, universities and hobbyists.
Technically known as 'additive manufacturing', 3D printing works by adding material layer by layer to build a 3D object directly from a digital file. This stands in contrast to traditional subtractive and formative manufacturing, which relies on cutting, drilling, molding and forging materials into shape. There are seven distinct additive manufacturing processes defined by the ISO standard.
FDM is the most affordable form of 3D printing. It works by melting a thermoplastic filament and extruding it through a heated nozzle. The printer lays down the material layer by layer on a build platform, where it cools and solidifies.
Meanwhile, SLA uses a laser or ultraviolet (UV) light to cure liquid resin at high precision and result in smooth finishes, making them ideal for dental models, jewellery and intricate figurines.
The future of 3D printing lies beyond basic plastic. High-performance materials such as PEKK, ULTEM, ceramics, metal powders and carbon-fiber composites are now being used for functional industrial parts, from aerospace components to surgical tools. These materials opening new frontiers in engineering by offering greater strength, heat resistance, and biocompatibility.

Unlike conventional manufacturing, which often wastes materials through cutting and shaping, 3D printing uses only the amount of material needed. Additionally, it allows manufacturing on demand, eliminating the need for large inventories or overseas shipping. This has enabled many home business startups during the Covid-19.
From the perspective of engineering, the design freedom given by the 3D printing is unmatched. Complex geometries and custom features designed by engineers can be printed directly without special tools or molds.
Malaysia's Growing 3D Printing Economy

In Malaysia, innovative individuals and startups are already turning 3D printing into profitable ventures. For instance, a Penang-based entrepreneur produces custom-fit insoles and orthotics using foot scans and 3D printers. In Kuala Lumpur, a company creates architectural models for developers. Besides, a company in Selangor designs and prints 3D implants for hospitals. Several companies offer design and printing services for production jigs, inspection fixtures, and prototypes.
Meanwhile, small home-bound businesses offer personalized 3D-printed home decors and gifts, such as designers' lamps, photo frames, nameplates and toys, through online platforms.
Can Sabah Benefits from the 3D Printing Revolution?
Sabah's economy traditionally relies on tourism, agriculture, oil and gas, and manufacturing. The 3D printing can help to complement the existing economic sector by providing diversified options and modernization of the local industry.
Entrepreneurs can make products with local motifs. Tourists may soon bring home personalized souvenirs with native designs, unique pots and sculptures using sustainable plastic. Moving forward, it can be marketed worldwide via online platforms.
Local artisans and film studios can make fantastical art pieces and iconic mask using 3D printing technology to support the creative industry, just like Marvel did for Black Panther, Deadpool and Iron Man.
Local workshops can reproduce rare or discontinued machine parts for factories and plantations. The development of 3D printing industry in Sabah will help to support the regional needs of critical components. For example, Shell Jurong Island, a dedicated chemical manufacturing facility in Singapore is able to replace their critical heat exchanger parts by engaging 3D metal printing technology that delivers within two weeks manufacturing lead time.
Besides, 3D printed molds, jigs and fixtures can support the needs of local manufacturers. Engineers can innovate new tools, components and customized machines for agricultural industries, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Several examples include 3D printed fruit pluckers, impellers and small machineries.
Talents for the Transformation
To drive this digital transformation, we need a new generation of entrepreneurs and problem-solvers who can creatively apply 3D printing. They will spearhead Malaysia's future innovations.
Equally vital are 3D part designers, who must be adept in computer-aided design (CAD), finite element simulation, and structural optimization. They, with mechanical engineering background, will translate ideas and concepts into printable reality. Design strategies and production planning are needed for large quantity and quality production. Material engineers play a key role in developing and refining printable materials that meet various industrial standards, in term of strength, safety, or sustainability.
Finally, mechanical and manufacturing engineers are needed to integrate 3D printing innovations into traditional production lines for improving quality control, efficiency and productivity. They are responsible from material selections to the in-house 3D printed product qualification to ensure the printed components are suitable.
Conclusion
With internet access and open-source platforms, all parts of Malaysia shall be able to participate in the global digital manufacturing movement. By embracing 3D printing, states like Sabah can bridge the technological divide with industrial states and create a uniquely local version of Industry 4.0.

Asset management firm Blackstone plans a $25 billion investment in data centers and energy infrastructure in Pennsylvania, its President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Gray told a panel at the summit. On Monday Meta Platforms Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said his company would spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centers, including a multi-gigawatt data center dubbed Prometheus, which is planned for Ohio. Cloud infrastructure technology company CoreWeave plans to spend up to $6 billion on building a new artificial intelligence data center in Pennsylvania, the company said on Tuesday. The pledges come amid a surge in investments for AI startups, a sign that the field continues to thrive even as venture capital firms are struggling to raise money, a report from PitchBook on Tuesday showed. Chinese firms rush to buy Nvidia AI chips as sales set to resume

BEIJING/HONG KONG: Chinese firms are scrambling to buy Nvidia's H20 artificial intelligence chips, two sources told Reuters, as the company said it planned to resume sales to the mainland days after its CEO met U.S. President Donald Trump. Nvidia's AI chips have been a key focus of U.S. export controls designed to keep the most advanced chips out of Chinese hands over national security concerns. The U.S.-listed company has said the curbs would cut its revenue by $15 billion. The world's most valuable firm is filing applications with the U.S. government to resume sales to China of the H20 graphics processing unit (GPU), and expects to get the licences soon, Nvidia said in a statement. "The U.S. government has assured Nvidia that licences will be granted, and Nvidia hopes to start deliveries soon," said the company, whose chief executive, Jensen Huang, is visiting Beijing and set to speak at an event on Wednesday. Rival AI chipmaker AMD also said it was informed by the U.S. Department of Commerce that licence applications to export its MI308 chips to China will be moving forward for review. AMD, which has forecast a $1.5 billion revenue hit this year due to the U.S. export curbs, plans to resume shipments of these chips when licences are approved, it said in an emailed statement. Shares of both Nvidia and AMD jumped about 5% in premarket trading. "This is a major catalyst for Nvidia shares, as many had written off the chance of any meaningful revenue coming from China," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst, Hargreaves Lansdown. The White House, which has previously expressed concern that the Chinese military could use AI chips to develop weapons, did not respond to a request for comment. Chinese companies have scrambled to place orders for the chips, which Nvidia would then need to send to the U.S. government for approval, the sources familiar with the matter said. They added that internet giants ByteDance and Tencent are in the process of submitting applications. Central to the process is a approved list put together by Nvidia for Chinese companies to register for potential purchases, one of the sources said. ByteDance and Tencent did not respond to a request for comment. Nvidia declined to comment on the approved list system. Nvidia, which has criticised the export curbs the Trump administration imposed in April that stopped it from selling its H20 chip in China, also said it has introduced a new model tailored to meet regulatory rules in the Chinese market. Huang is set for a media briefing in Beijing on Wednesday when he attends a supply chain expo. The Nvidia CEO also visited China in April and stressed the importance of the Chinese market. "The Chinese market is massive, dynamic, and highly innovative, and it's also home to many AI researchers," Huang told Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on Tuesday. "Therefore, it is indeed crucial for American companies to establish roots in the Chinese market." Asked at a regular foreign ministry briefing in Beijing about Nvidia's plans to resume AI chip sales, a spokesperson said, "China is opposed to the politicisation, instrumentalisation and weaponisation of science, technology and economic and trade issues to maliciously blockade and suppress China." SUPPLY CHAIN Nvidia has faced increased competition from Chinese tech giant Huawei and other makers of GPUs - the chips used to train artificial intelligence. But Chinese companies, including big tech firms, still crave Nvidia chips for its computing platform known as CUDA. Huang's visit is being closely watched in both China and the United States, where a bipartisan pair of senators last week sent the CEO a letter asking him to abstain from meeting companies working with military or intelligence bodies. The senators also asked Huang to refrain from meeting with entities named on the United States' restricted export list. The move to resume sales of the H20 chips comes amid easing tensions between Washington and Beijing, with China relaxing controls on rare earth exports and the United States allowing chip design software services to restart in China. "The uncertainties between the U.S. and China remain high and despite a pause in H20's ban, Chinese companies will continue to diversify their options to better protect their supply chain integrity," said He Hui, research director of semiconductors at Omdia. The H20 chip was developed specifically for the Chinese market after U.S. export curbs imposed on national security grounds in late 2023. The AI chip was Nvidia's most powerful legally available product in China until it was effectively banned by Washington in April. The H20 ban forced Nvidia to write off $5.5 billion in inventories, and Huang told the Stratechery podcast that the company also had to walk away from $15 billion in sales. But now, the possibility of new licences could represent about $15 billion to $20 billion in additional revenue this year, depending on when the approval is granted and how quick the deliveries can ramp back up, said Hargreaves' Britzman. "There's also a chance Nvidia can reverse some, or all, of the $5.5 billion impairment charge taken in the first quarter, providing a double boost for earnings." Nvidia also announced the development of a new AI chip designed specifically for China, called the RTX Pro GPU. The company described it as "fully compliant" with U.S. export controls and suitable for digital twin AI applications in sectors, such as smart factories and logistics. In May, Reuters reported Nvidia was preparing to launch in China a new AI chip, based on the RTX Pro 6000D, at a significantly lower price point than the H20. The graphics processing unit would be part of Nvidia's latest generation Blackwell-architecture AI processors and was expected to be priced well below the H20 for its weaker specifications and simpler manufacturing requirements, sources said. China generated $17 billion in revenue for Nvidia in the fiscal year ending January 26, or 13% of total sales, based on its latest annual report. Huang has consistently highlighted China as a critical market for Nvidia's growth. - Reuters

Under the agreement, Geely will acquire the remaining stake it does not already own for $2.687 per share, or $26.87 per American depositary share, the companies said in separate statements on Tuesday. The offer, which comes just over a year after Geely took the EV brand public in the U.S., represents an 18.9% premium to Zeekr's last close on May 6. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Geely already owns about 62.8% of Zeekr and initially offered $2.2 billion in May. It has now raised that to around $2.4 billion. Zeekr's U.S. IPO in May 2024 - which valued the company at $6.8 billion - marked the first major Chinese listing in the U.S. since 2021. Founded in 2021, Zeekr was launched as Geely's premium electric vehicle brand, showcasing the group's flagship in-house technologies-from EV architecture to battery systems.
