Bharti Airtel aims to have 50% women in its workforce: Amrita Padda

Time of India16-05-2025
NEW DELHI:
Bharti Airtel
is committed to strengthening gender diversity across its workforce, with a long term vision of achieving a 50% women representation.
'We are currently at around 18.5% women which is still far from the 50% goal I envision, but it's a significant leap from the sub 10% figure we had not very long ago,'
Amrita Padda
, chief people officer, Bharti Airtel said during a keynote address on the occasion of World Telecommunications Day 2025 virtual event organised by ETTelecom.
'Our approach has been fairly simple and focused on just a few things. I would actually call them three. The first one is about matching supply to demand. The second one is about enabling a culture which arrests the leak. And the third one is what I call managing the four M's in a women's career life cycle,' she said.
We have revamped our campus hiring program, now engaging with nearly 100 institutions across 18 states and 30 cities. By targeting a broader range of campuses—including women-only and non-traditional institutions—Airtel has raised women representation in its campus intake to over 60%.
Recognising barriers faced by women due to life events such as marriage, maternity, mobility and medical needs, Airtel also launched a remote work program that empowers qualified women from smaller towns like Chhindwara and Solapur to contribute in tech-led roles from their homes.
The company has set up over 40–50 remote micro-offices using its own technology infrastructure. Additionally, the 'Step-In' returnship program helps women re-enter the workforce after career breaks by directly addressing hiring bias and proactively recruiting women with experience gaps, Padda said..
These targeted initiatives reflect Airtel's commitment to building a more inclusive and diverse workforce, while leveraging technology to unlock talent from across the country, she said.
While talking about retaining women workforce, she mentioned when Airtel sought to increase female participation in field network roles, it identified that a key limiting factor was the low percentage of women with driving licenses in India—a single-digit figure. Subsequently, Airtel introduced a support policy to help women employees obtain driving licenses, removing a practical barrier to entry.
Such targeted solutions help us in creating an inclusive environment not just through headline initiatives, but by embedding inclusivity into the operational fabric of our workforce strategy, Padda added. She also said that at entry levels, women representation is around 38% which drops to 26% in managerial roles and goes down further to around 15%.

Telecom earnings preview: Jio may lead in revenue growth; Airtel likely to top ARPU number, Vi steadies user base

Reliance Jio may have outpaced Bharti Airtel in both overall revenue and per-user revenue growth in the June quarter, aided by strong additions in its high-paying fixed wireless access (FWA) home broadband segment, analysts said ahead of the telecom sector's first-quarter earnings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Market leader Jio is expected to report a 1.8% sequential jump in average revenue per user (ARPU) to Rs 210, driven by the addition of 2 million FWA users—part of a likely net addition of 7.2 million subscribers, according to JM Financial. Airtel while likely to clock a higher ARPU at Rs 249, may see a lower sequential growth rate of 1.6%, the brokerage added, according to an ET report. Vodafone Idea (Vi), meanwhile, is projected to report an ARPU of Rs 167, up 1.6% from the previous quarter, buoyed by subscriber upgrades, improved user mix, and one extra day in the June quarter. Crucially, Vi is also expected to maintain its user base for the first time in recent memory, aided by an expanding 4G footprint and wider rollout of services. Revenue outlook diverges on network and strategy Jio's strong subscriber additions are set to translate into a 2.7% quarter-on-quarter rise in revenue to Rs 31,200 crore, JM Financial estimated. However, its standalone net profit may stay flat at Rs 6,640 crore, due to the full-quarter impact of higher depreciation and amortisation following 5G spectrum capitalisation and fixed asset additions in the March quarter. Airtel's wireless service revenues are forecast to grow 2.6% to Rs 27,305 crore, while its consolidated net profit could jump 47% sequentially to Rs 7,690 crore, on the back of robust mobile broadband growth. JM Financial expects Airtel to add 5.5 million mobile broadband users in Q1—down from 6.6 million in Q4 FY25—while its total subscriber addition is pegged at 2.3 million, the report said. According to BofA Securities, Airtel's enterprise revenues may remain under pressure due to its exit from low-margin commodity wholesale voice services. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now For Vodafone Idea, JM Financial expects a modest 1.1% sequential rise in revenue to Rs 11,100 crore, with net loss narrowing slightly to Rs 7,145 crore. Analysts say Vi's stabilising user base—after years of decline—is a result of its improving network and recent 5G expansion. 'We consider this trend to sustain going ahead, given a better network now,' BofA noted in a report. Tariff hike already priced in The impact of the recent tariff hikes by telcos has already played out, and analysts now anticipate the next round of price increases only by next year. 'We expect telcos to raise tariffs by around 12% in 2026,' BofA Securities said. Vi recently launched phase two of its 5G rollout across 23 cities, aiming to cover all 17 of its priority circles. However, the telco still lags nearly 2.5 years behind Jio and Airtel in the 5G race, having lost significant market share since the rollout began.

Airtel launches free anti-fraud shield for all Mumbai users, protects 2.1 million users from online fraud in 50 days

Bharti Airtel claims to have successfully safeguarded over 2.1 million users across Mumbai from online fraud within just 50 days of launching its AI-powered fraud detection system . The company says its advanced security solution automatically blocks malicious links and redirects users to safety warnings in under 100 milliseconds. The system, automatically enabled for all Airtel mobile and broadband customers, scans and filters suspicious links across multiple platforms including SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, email and web browsers. It examines over 1 billion URLs daily using real-time threat intelligence to identify and block harmful sites instantly. When users click on suspicious links, such as fake package tracking URLs like , Airtel's system immediately scans the destination and blocks access if flagged as dangerous. Users are then redirected to a warning message reading "Blocked! Airtel found this site dangerous!" "Customer safety is at the heart of everything we do," said Aditya Kankaria, CEO - Mumbai, Bharti Airtel. "This innovation is deeply embedded within our network, offering proactive protection without requiring any action from the customer's end." Mumbai, ranked among India's most digitally advanced cities, faces growing threats from fraudsters who increasingly target users through phishing links, fake delivery notifications, and spurious banking alerts. Airtel's solution serves as a digital shield protecting families, senior citizens, homemakers, students, and first-time smartphone users. The fraud detection system operates silently in the background, requires no installation, and is offered free of cost to all users. As digital adoption continues to expand across Mumbai, from online banking to government e-services, Airtel's initiative plays a critical role in creating a safer digital ecosystem for the city's millions of users.

Jio may outshine Airtel in June quarter revenue growth

Mumbai: Reliance Jio may have outdone Bharti Airtel on overall revenue and per-user revenue growth in the first quarter ended June, driven by a strong addition of higher paying fixed wireless access (FWA) home broadband users, analysts said. Market leader Jio's average revenue per user (ARPU) is expected to grow 1.8% quarter-on-quarter to '210 for the June quarter, boosted by the addition of 2 million FWA users out of a likely net addition of 7.2 million users, estimates by JM Financial showed. Airtel is set to report a higher ARPU of '249, but its growth rate would be lower at 1.6%, the brokerage said. Vodafone Idea (Vi) is also expected to see ARPU improvement of 1.6% for the first quarter to '167 due to upgrades and improved subscriber mix and aided by one more day in April-June quarter compared to the preceding three months. Analysts also expect the struggling telco to largely hold on to its user base on a net base - a first in a long time - backed mainly by a wider 4G network. Live Events To be sure, the flow through of price hikes made by telecom companies have been fully absorbed by now and the next round of increases can only be expected next year, equity research firm BofA Securities said in its report. The brokerage expects telcos to raise tariffs by around 12% then. REVENUE GROWTH Strong subscriber additions are also expected to translate to 2.7% sequential growth in Jio's revenue to '31,200 crore for the first quarter of FY26, JM Financial said. However, its standalone net profit is likely to remain flat at '6,640 crore "due to full quarter impact of higher depreciation and amortisation on account of capitalisation of 5G spectrum and net fixed asset towards end-4QFY25," it added. Airtel's wireless services revenues are expected to grow 2.6% on-quarter to '27,305 crore while its consolidated net profit is expected to jump 47% to '7,690 crore mainly due to strong mobile broadband additions. JM Financial expects the telco to post a strong mobile broadband subscriber addition of 5.5 million in the June quarter, down from 6.6 million in the March quarter, while its overall subs addition is pegged at 2.3 million. BofA in a report said, "We estimate (Airtel's) first quarter enterprise revenues again to be impacted as the company is exiting the low margin commodity wholesale voice business." Loss-making Vi is predicted to close the first quarter with flat numbers as it scales up 4G services and expands 5G roll outs. "With an improving network coverage, we expect VIL to report a largely flattish user base (versus declining net subscriber adds in the past). We consider this trend to sustain going ahead, given a better network now," BofA said. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
