'Floating village' to house thousands of Asian Games athletes
The plan will see 4,600 athletes and officials accommodated on the ship for the duration of the Games, which will take place in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from 19 September to 4 October 2026.
Organisers will lease a luxury cruise liner that will be docked at Nagoya's port.
A further 2,400 people will be housed in temporary shelters made from shipping containers a short bus ride away. The two locations will collectively accommodate about half of the 15,000 athletes and officials expected to attend the Games.
The remainder will stay in alternative accommodation, including in Tokyo, where the swimming competitions will be held.
Local organisers were keen to avoid the cost of constructing a traditional athletes' village, but Asian Olympic officials warned that any alternative must still enable athletes to meet and interact with one another.
Kazuhiro Yagi, Vice-Secretary General of the Aichi-Nagoya Games Organising Committee, told AFP that they had taken athletes' opinions into consideration and aimed to "provide a service that satisfies them."
"The cruise ship and container housing are in different locations, but they're only about 10 minutes apart by shuttle bus," he said.
"I don't think it will be a problem at all in terms of being able to interact with other athletes.
"There's an aquarium and various other entertainment facilities in the area. I think they'll be able to unwind, relax, and come together."
The 2023 Games in Hangzhou, China, featured around 12,000 athletes, making it the largest Asian Games in history, with more competitors than the Olympics.
The Asian Games return to Japan for the first time since Hiroshima hosted them in 1994. The country has since staged several major sporting events, including the pandemic-delayed Olympics in 2021, the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Yagi admits that there "still isn't enough awareness" of the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Games and says more needs to be done to raise the profile of the event.
"I don't think there's anyone in Japan who hasn't heard of the Olympics or Paralympics, but my personal feeling is that perhaps only half the population knows about the Asian Games," he said.
"Young people weren't even born the last time it was held here 32 years ago, so I'd like them to discover that it's a fantastic event."
The Asian Games feature an eclectic mix of events, with bridge, kabaddi, and dragon boat racing sharing the stage with traditional Olympic sports such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics, and football.
The Aichi-Nagoya Games have added mixed martial arts to the programme, and Yagi hopes its debut will showcase Asia's diverse martial arts traditions and attract new fans.
"We want to appeal to the interests of young people, so including new events is essential," he said.
"We want to include mixed martial arts to engage the younger generation in sport."
Esports proved a huge hit at its full Asian Games debut in Hangzhou, with fans filling the futuristic 4,500-seat arena to watch star gamers such as South Korea's Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok.
Aichi-Nagoya will be the first time Japan hosts an eSports competition on such a large scale, and Yagi believes its benefits extend beyond just the youth.
"Esports can help elderly people who don't have many opportunities to exercise," he said.
"You use your fingers and make intricate movements, which I've heard is good for combatting dementia.

Arteta backs Arsenal's handling of Partey departure
SINGAPORE: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Monday defended the club's handling of Thomas Partey's departure after the Ghana international midfielder was arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault. Arsenal did not offer the 32-year-old a new contract at the end of last season and days later he was charged by British police with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault between 2021 and 2022. Partey is due to appear before magistrates in London on August 5. In a statement released on July 4, the day Partey was arrested, Arsenal said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case." Arteta was asked during Arsenal's pre-season tour of Singapore whether the allegations against Partey were the deciding factor in him being released. The Spaniard said he was "100 per cent" convinced that Arsenal had followed the correct procedure, adding: "The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that." Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 35 times in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals, and 12 times in the Champions League. - AFP

Boxing-Former undisputed world champion Taylor forced to retire over eye issue
FILE PHOTO: Boxing - Josh Taylor & Jack Catterall Press Conference - Leeds, Britain - February 19, 2024 Josh Taylor during the press conference Action Images via Reuters/Lee Smith (Reuters) -Former undisputed light-welterweight world champion Josh Taylor has retired from boxing on medical advice over a recurring eye issue that could risk him losing his eyesight, the 34-year-old said on Monday. Taylor, the only British male boxer to win all four belts in a single division, became the undisputed champion in the 140-pound weight class with a win over Jose Ramirez in 2021. Undefeated Taylor successfully defended his undisputed title against Jack Catterall the next year, his 19th professional win in a row, before losing three fights by decision, most recently against Ekbow Essuman in May. "This isn't an easy post for me to write, but on the advice of my doctors, it's sadly a necessary one," Taylor wrote on Instagram. "As has been publicised before, I've had a recurring issue with my eye that unfortunately means I now have to call time on my career or risk losing my eyesight." Taylor represented Britain at the 2012 Olympics and won gold at the next year's Commonwealth Games before turning professional in 2015. "I am just a kid from the Pans who scaled the very top of the sport but I could not have done it without those who have supported me through thick and thin," Taylor added. DHAKA: Fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman rocked Pakistan for 110 before opener Parvez Hossain hit an unbeaten 50 as Bangladesh won the first Twenty20 international by seven wickets in Dhaka yesterday. Taskin finished with 3-22 while Rahman grabbed 2-6 in his four economical overs to dismiss the visitors in 19.3 overs for Pakistan's lowest total against Bangladesh in all T20Is. Parvez smashed five sixes and three boundaries in his 39-ball 56 not out to help the home team chase down the target in 15.3 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Debutant Pakistan pacer Salman Mirza (2-23) jolted Bangladesh with wickets of Tanzid Hasan (one) and Litton Das (one) but Parvez and Towhid Hridoy (36) added 73 for the third wicket to ease up the chase. This becomes Bangladesh's fourth win over Pakistan in 23 T20Is. For Pakistan, opener Fakhar Zaman top-scored with a 34-ball 44, which included six boundaries and a six, while Abbas Afridi scored 22 and Khushdil Shah 17. Pakistan's previous lowest T20I total against Bangladesh was 127-5 at the same venue in 2021. Sent into bat, Pakistan had a disastrous start, with half the side dismissed for 46 in the eighth over with Saim Ayub (six), Mohammad Haris (four) and skipper Salman Agha (three) falling cheaply. Hasan Nawaz fell without scoring and Mohammad Nawaz made just three. Zaman, dropped on four and 30, added 24 for the sixth wicket before he was run out after being sent back by Khushdil Shah but was caught out of his crease. Shah and Abbas took Pakistan past the 100-mark during their 33-run stand for the seventh wicket. The remaining matches are on Tuesday and Thursday, also in Dhaka. — AFP
