Review: Kokandy Productions resurrects the dreamy 'Amélie the Musical'
What was ground zero for the manic pixie dream girl movie trope? Zooey Deschanel in '(500) Days of Summer?' Kirsten Dunst in 'Elizabethtown?' Winona Ryder in 'Autumn in New York?' It depends on the nature of your preferred definition and some go back as far as Katharine Hepburn. But a case surely could be made for the pointy-haired French star Audrey Tautou in 'Amélie,' the whimsical 2001 French fable from Jean-Pierre Jeunet about a melancholy but lovable Montmartre waitress who decides that the best cure for her own feelings of loneliness is throwing herself into improving the lives of the clutch of Parisian eccentrics who surround her. 'Amélie' was one of the most internationally successful French movies ever made, and those of us who fell under its witty, sweet, intermittently acerbic spell at the time surely recall it with great fondness. Ah, when quirkiness and whimsy still felt fresh and new. Until, that is, some of us walked into Broadway's Walter Kerr Theater in 2017 for the disastrous musical version. Not many folk had that dubious pleasure, given that 'Amélie,' which has a book by Craig Lucas and music by Daniel Messé, lasted only 57 regular performances. I hadn't seen it since before this weekend and was not sure I ever would before Kokandy Productions, the indisputable current leader in edgy, off-Loop musicals, announced its summer project. 'Amélie,' the musical yin to 'Lupin's' Netflix yang. Interesting, I thought. Everything gets licensed. I should first note why I think 'Amélie' had such a rough go of it on Broadway in 2017. Many reasons: The source movie was so organically and distinctly beautiful as to resist brand extension. A chilly vibe couldn't compete with the warmth and vulnerability of Tautou's film performance. The show struggled to translate so fundamental a cinematic narrative into the language of a Broadway musical. And, frankly, time had just . Daring originality had become a familiar trope. Kokandy's hugely inventive production, which is a must-see for anyone interested in the long Chicago tradition of fresh and intimate takes on failed Broadway musicals, goes a long way toward giving Amélie back her crucial sense of self and worth. You might say it de-tropifies her. Most specifically, that is achieved by the delightful Aurora Penepacker, who plays the central character here and makes Amélie entirely her own, even though she comes with a Tautou-like Parisian bob and a day-glo vivacity that put me most in mind of Jasmine Amy Rogers in 'Boop! The Musical.' The gifted director and choregrapher Derek Van Barham, who has been doing for musicals these last few summers what David Cromer once did for straight plays in the basement of the Chopin Theatre in Wicker Park, has created an eye-poppingly immersive production that draws on the cabaret-style implications of the material (Amélie is, after all, a waitress in a Parisian cafe) and features a cast that switches, 'Once'-style, back and forth between playing instruments (playing them well, too) and performing the show's wacky lost urban souls. The tone of the production is admirable diverse: Mizha Lee Overn, for example, brings warmth to her little clutch of characters while Quinn Rigg, between stints playing the violin, adds a delicious soupçon of cynicism to his denizens. I did think Joe Giovannetti, who plays Amélie's love interest, Nino, could warm up some more toward the end, but then the production's problems mostly are in the second act. Act 1 is pretty knockout but post-intermission (an intermission that did not exist on Broadway) the show gets less specific and it just pops off the boil a tad. Penepacker's vocals are simply fabulous all the way through to her big Act 2 number, 'Sister's Pickle' (I know; what a title for an 11 o'clock number) and then she suddenly seems less tonally assured. I suspect that the show ran out of rehearsal time, which is not uncommon. I also think the problems within the material finally start to overwhelm the plethora of creative staging ideas here, all shrewdly designed and lit by G. 'Max' Maxin IV. Caper-driven films invariably have too much plot for Act 2 and that's surely the case here, when all the audience really wants is to spend more time inside the head of the heroine. So I can't report that Kokandy solves about 'Amélie.' But the score is worth hearing, when this well sung. Indeed, I'll wager you won't regret going for a second, not with this much passion and creativity and sheer talent running around what long has been the most artistically satisfying basement in the city. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt just bought one of the largest mansions in LA — and it's bigger than the Taj Mahal
The former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, just secured the keys to the Spelling kingdom. Schmidt and his wife, Wendy, dropped a cool $110 million on Spelling Manor, the Wall Street Journal reported. The legendary property spans over 56,000 square feet, making it one of the largest homes in Los Angeles. Schmidt's recent acquisition is now tied for the second most expensive home sale of 2025. ASSOCIATED PRESS Construction on limestone-clad mansion was completed in 1988 by legendary TV producer Aaron Spelling — the mastermind behind such hits as 'Dynasty,' 'Charlie's Angels' and '90210.' For a time, it was recognized as the largest single-family home in Los Angeles County, and its successive sales repeatedly notched record prices. The mansion is famous for its grand size and outlandish amenities. Its over-the-top interiors during the Spelling era included a two-lane bowling alley, multiple gift-wrapping rooms, a dedicated doll collection room, a 20-seat cinema and 27 bathrooms. Candy Spelling, the widow of Aaron Spelling and mother of actress Tori Spelling, sold the home in for $85 million in 2011 to the Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone. The 22-year-old carried out a major redesign of the palatial home, reportedly opting for a more contemporary look. 7 The mansion can reportedly accommodate parking for 100-plus cars. The 70-year-old will carry out a major remodel and rebrand of the Manor, according to the Journal. In addition to simplifying the floor plan and making it more energy efficient, he reportedly intends to rechristen the home '594,' after its Mapleton Drive address. Despite the eye-watering price, Schmidt can congratulate himself on paying less that the previous owner. The Manor last changed hands when Ecclestone offloaded the property to an unidentified buyer — reportedly a Saudi national — for slightly less than $120 million in 2019, setting yet another California record. 7 Schmidt is planning to renovate the home for simplicity and energy efficiency. The pair own an impressive portfolio of other trophy homes across London, New York, California, DC, Florida and Massachusetts.

'Happy Gilmore 2' cast celebrates rapper Eminem's comic chops

Photo courtesy of Netflix NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Adam Sandler and the actors who play his sons in Happy Gilmore 2 are praising rapper Eminem for his surprise comic appearance in the long-awaited movie sequel. "Eminem is funny as hell," Sandler captioned a video of outtakes featuring the hip-hop star that he shared on social media Friday. In the sequel's final golf game, Eminem plays a bucket-hatted heckler, the son of a similar-looking trouble-maker played by the late comedian Joe Flaherty in the 1996 original. Happy (Sandler) ultimately wins, earning the $300,000 he needs to send his only daughter Vienna (Sunny Sandler) to a prestigious Parisian dance school. The actors who played Gilmore's rambunctious adult sons said getting to beat up Eminem and throw him into an alligator-infested pond was a highlight of the movie, which is now streaming on Netflix. "That was a nuts day," pro wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman, who plays Happy's eldest son Gordy, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "When I work out, Eminem is my go-to [music] over and over and over again. He has created some of the best pump-up music in the history of music ever, point blank," Friedman said. "So, I'm just standing there and I'm like: 'Wait, I'm beating up Eminem with my closest friends on this random day? OK, sign me up!'" Friedman said the hip-hop icon didn't just film is scene and make a quick exit. "Not only was he a good sport, he stayed way later and he was like, 'Let me try to do a different take and say something different there,' and he improvised so many different lines while he was in the water with the gators," Friedman added. "He's something else." Philip Fine Schneider, who plays Gordy's brother Bobby, chimed in: "He was, literally in the water, which is crazy. I didn't even think he was going to be in the water. I was like, 'Oh, it will be a body double or whatever.' But he was in there and wanted to be in there and wanted to stay. It was great." Friedman said the professional behavior of Eminem and the rest of the big stars who had cameos in the film was a great example for the younger members of the cast. "The big takeaway was the fact that, no matter who the person was that came on to set -- big or small -- everybody put in 110 percent and was just so amped to be a part of the project, so it was really inspiring stuff," Friedman added. Conor Sherry, who plays Terry, said he and the actors who played his siblings were all honored to help carry on the Happy Gilmore legacy. "it was everything," Sherry said. "We had high expectations, obviously. Adam's reputation is so great and he exceeded it in every way. To be able to do something and learn so much is such a joyous [experience,]" he added. "It was a full-fledged master class, more than you could ever learn in any classroom or college. I'm pro-college, but Adam Sandler taught us a lot." "To have such a chill environment and to be able to also learn so much at the same time and have it not feel forced was just really cool," Friedman said. The brothers' constantly fight and talk over each other, but they also are protective of and affectionate with their widower dad and little sister. "They're, basically, just the exact same copies in a certain way. I feel like we all have the same IQ," Ethan Cutkosky, who plays Wayne, said with a laugh. "When we're together, we can collectively solve some math equations." Schneider added, "We're bonded by love. We beat the [expletive] out of each other, but we love each other." "When Happy's down, it's on us to lift our father up," Schneider said. "There are a lot of moments I think will hit home with people, who have parents or parental figures who are struggling," Friedman said. "You get to watch the kids go through the same exact roller coaster that Happy is going through. When he's up, we're up," he added. "When he's down, we're down, but we're rooting for him the entire way through and I think it's such a beautiful thing as far as unconditional love goes."
