Former England and Northamptonshire batsman Wayne Larkins has died after a short illness, aged 71, according to a report on the Northamptonshire website. The batsman passed away on June 28. Between 1979 and 1991, Larkins, well known as "Ned", participated in 13 Tests and 25 One Day Internationals. His second appearance for England was at the 1979 World Cup final, where he batted at No. 7 and bowled two overs. However, his greatest moment came when he scored the winning runs at Sabina Park, giving England a surprise 1-0 lead on the 1989-90 tour of the West Indies.
That was Larkins' seventh Test, coming more than eight years after his sixth. He might have played more in between had he not been banned for three years for involvement on the 1982 rebel tour of South Africa.
Larkins played for Northamptonshire for the majority of his career, amassing over 700 games for the team, and was well-known for both his strokeplay and his vibrant demeanour off the field. After that, he relocated to Durham, where he eventually retired after a career that saw him score 40,000 runs and 85 centuries.
Larkins passed 1,000 first-class runs in every season between 1978 and 1985, and his magnificent purple patch in 1983 - hitting 236 against Derbyshire at Derby and 252 off Glamorgan's attack at Swansea in the space of seven weeks - might well have earned a Test recall, had he not been banned at the time for joining the unofficial tour to South Africa in 1982.

New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): In the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI Rankings, two-time champions West Indies have slipped out of the automatic qualification spots for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, risking another absence from the marquee tournament. The latest ICC rankings update came following Bangladesh's victory in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, where they managed to defend 248 runs at Colombo thanks to a brilliant five-wicket haul from Taijul Islam, levelling the three-match series 1-1. This win took Bangladesh a spot above to number nine in the men's ODI team rankings, as per Wisden. However, Windies could rise back to the required rankings before the cutoff date for World Cup qualification. The West Indies have now dropped to 10th spot and sit outside the automatic qualification spots for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. The 2027 edition of the tournament will witness participation from 14 teams, from which South Africa and Zimbabwe will automatically qualify as hosts. While the third host, Namibia, will not get the same privilege as they are not a full-time ICC member playing Test cricket. The top-eight teams (excluding the hosts), will qualify on basis of their ODI Rankings on March 31, 2027. The remaining four spots will be determined by a qualifier tournament consisting of 10 teams. The Men in Maroon will be aiming to avoid playing the Qualifiers, as they did the same for the 2023 edition and missed out their first World Cup since its inception in 1975, beaten by Netherlands and Sri Lanka for those two coveted spots. Elsewhere in the latest ICC ODI Rankings, Sri Lanka dropped to fifth spot after their loss, while Pakistan moved up to fourth. The ICC Champions Trophy holders India are at the top with 124 points. Mumbai: Amid the buzz of activity that will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from Tuesday, a certain Cristiano Ronaldo will be expected to make an appearance. (AFP) The 40-year-old from Portugal, however, will not be the only icon present at the SEF Arena where the best competitors from the realm of esports will gather. Also present will be a certain Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura and Arjun Erigaisi as chess makes its debut as an event. 'There was a little bit of surprise,' said Mike McCabe, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Esports World Cup Foundation, the event organisers, in an interview with HT. 'The overwhelming response has been incredibly positive. And now it's gone from that positive sentiment to a lot of excitement as to seeing something different and being able to engage with it.' To be played in the rapid format, chess will be contested between 16 teams represented by one player each. The turnout from the chess community has been enthusiastic, with four of the world's top five taking part. The prize pool for the chess event alone is a whopping $1.5 million. Overall, the 25 tournaments across the 24 different games – such as Valorant, DOTA 2, League of Legends, Street Fighter and more – have an aggregate prize purse of $70 million at the World Cup that starts on Monday and continues for seven weeks. The online version though, which enjoyed a boom during the pandemic, gives it a footing in Esports. 'There was a digital renaissance and more and more people engaging with chess online during the lockdown. And we saw that more broadly across the entire sector,' said McCabe. 'Those really intense 10-minute games (rapid) is something that's really there. I think, coupled with Grandmasters as superstar influencers now has also helped us because there's been more than just the matches which has drawn people into the community.' The inclusion of chess also marries the new world of gaming with an ancient craft. But McCabe asserted that for all of Esports' popularity, chess adds a great deal of value to the upcoming World Cup. 'Honestly, it's us catching up with chess and the chess community and really Esports being part of that and the gaming community,' he said. Already, India is a growing market for gaming. But chess being a part of the Esports World Cup can open another avenue for Indian players. 'I understand five of the best chess players in the world are from India,' said McCabe. 'And so, there's a really strong representation there, that the best athletes in the world for that particular sport are already from India. That gives India a head start from this discipline. 'As for other games, we're starting to see other sports, other games really gather pace in India as well. I think it's only a matter of time before we start to see some other top Esports athletes coming out of India.'
