Phillies draft Gage Wood, other college pitchers on Day 1 of 2025 MLB Draft

Gage Wood delivered one of the College World Series' strongest pitching performances ever when he threw a 119-pitch no-hitter on June 16.
He was part of a different kind of history when the Phillies selected him 26th during Sunday's 2025 MLB Draft — the first of three pitchers the club took, marking the first time Philadelphia has selected three pitchers with its first three draft picks since 1994.

'We saw a strong-bodied competitor that goes out there with big stuff, dominates with his fastball and curveball,' Brian Barber, assistant general manager for amateur scouting, said. 'It's quality stuff. It's a quality pitcher. It's a guy that can just dominate hitters through the lineup with two pitches.'
Wood and the Phillies' two other selections, Iowa left-handed pitcher Cade Obermueller (second round, 63) and Vanderbilt right-handed pitcher Cody Bowker (third round, 100), mark a departure from Barber's first five drafts leading Philadelphia's scouting department. The Phillies selected high school players in the first round from 2020-2024 and high school position players over the past three drafts, leaning into a demographic that can be risky but that the organization felt had serious upside.
So why go college-heavy on Sunday?
'Obviously, you pick 26, there were a lot of high school players that we liked in this draft as well,' Barber said. 'The board just happened to not fall that way for us this year. When Gage got there, he was the highest player on our board and we went ahead and took him. I told you guys, I'm not sure if you ever believe me, but in past years we liked college guys as well. Sometimes, when you're picking later in the draft like that, it's the way it lines up.'
The Phillies last used a first-round pick on a college pitcher in 2014 on Aaron Nola, who reached the big leagues in just over a year. Barber said Wood's strike-throwing and low walk rate give him the potential to move quickly through the system, though it is difficult to predict how fast anyone will advance.
Wood's fastball reached 98 mph this season, typically sitting at 95-96 mph with strong depth and drop. It pairs well with his curveball, which sits around 83-85 mph. Barber said he also likes his split-change and slider for a four-pitch mix.

The Phillies envision him as a starter, Barber added, though he pitched in relief until this season in college.
'The stuff just stayed throughout (the no-hitter),' Barber said. 'It was 119 pitches in that game, and it was quality stuff from pitch one to pitch 119. Especially with the ability to throw strikes at such a high level that he's done with the dominating pitchers. We're not planning to move him to the bullpen long-term anytime soon.'
Wood will likely slot as the organization's second-best pitching prospect behind righty Andrew Painter.
Wood first caught the Phillies' eye playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League last summer, Barber said, and his stuff took a jump in his first few starts this season. Then came a shoulder injury that sidelined him for more than a month. The Phillies continued to scout him upon his return from injury in April, still seeing quality strikes, stuff and delivery. The organization was not concerned by the injury, Barber said, though they will likely have to 'play it smart' throughout the rest of 2025 based on Wood's progression.
The Phillies' second and third round picks are 'low-slot, low release height guys who give a hitter a little bit of a different look than the normal pitcher does,' Barber said.
Obermueller, the second-rounder, was drafted 19th by the Rangers in 2024 and chose to return to college. He made some improvements, most notably cutting his walk rate this season. And the third-round pick, Cody Bowker, owns a fastball with strong ride along with a cutter and changeup.
'When you're taking a college pitcher up high, they should be doing more than one thing,' Barber said. 'They should be doing multiple things, so they should have more than one pitch. For each of the guys we drafted today: Gage it's his fastball (and) curveball, Obermueller it's his fastball (slider) , Cody Bowker — it's his fastball, slider and sweeper, really… Anytime you're taking a college pitcher, they should have a few of the qualities that allow a guy to advance at a faster than normal rate.'

Real Madrid star scoops Club World Cup Golden Boot award

Real Madrid youngster Gonzalo García has secured for himself a prestigious individual piece of silverware. This comes owing to his exploits at this summer's Club World Cup. The newly-formatted CWC was of course brought to a close on Sunday evening, as Chelsea beat out Paris Saint-Germain to lift the title. Advertisement The aforementioned Real Madrid managed to battle their way to the tournament's semi-finals, but were sent packing in comprehensive fashion by PSG. Youngster Gonzalo, meanwhile, enjoyed something of a breakout summer, on his way to four goals in six appearances in the USA. And as alluded to above, such exploits have proven enough to see the Spanish frontman crowned Club World Cup top scorer. Whilst four players (Serhou Guirassy, Marcos Leonardo, Ángel Di María) finished the competition with four goals to their name, Gonzalo also added an assist, enough to see him take home the Golden Boot award. What is the NFL's best division in 2025?

A few years ago, the NFC East had three teams in the playoffs. Last season, the division had both teams in the NFC championship game. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders to win the NFC championship and would go on to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. All four divisional teams have made the playoffs at least once in the last three years. The NFC East must be the best division, or, at the very least, one of the top two divisions in the NFL. Right? Not, according to Eric Edholm of who ranked all eight divisions, with the NFC East coming in at No. 4. The Super Bowl champion Eagles will try to defend their title with the vast majority of last year's offense back in place and enough defensive reinforcements to match the unit's 2024 success. Their biggest threat could come from within the division, with the rising Commanders giving the East arguably the best 1-2 punch of any division. Last year's Eagles were only truly outplayed one time all season -- a 33-16 defeat at Tampa Bay in Week 4 -- and they have enough talent to replace their free-agent losses on defenses. After a few early stumbles last September, the defense emerged as an elite unit -- and a repeat wouldn't be shocking. Here's what Edholm said about the rest of the division. The Commanders took the league by storm, with Jayden Daniels stealing the key to the city in a brilliant rookie season. Daniels is a special talent, and Washington added two big offensive pieces (LT Laremy Tunsil and WR Deebo Samuel), but concerns remain on defense. The Cowboys are a tricky team to handicap with Brian Schottenheimer taking over. Dallas' new head man needs to revitalize the run game and get the best from Dak Prescott. But the defense also looms as an area of worry after last season's troubles stopping the run. The Giants have added more talent to a solid defense and completely refreshed the QB room, offering hope for better results. But a daunting schedule and major pressure on head coach Brian Daboll won't make it the easiest turnaround this season without major improvement on both sides of the ball. New York remains a bottom-eight team until it proves otherwise. Opinions are mixed about which team will finish second in the division. Some believe the Cowboys will give the Eagles a fight with quarterback Dak Prescott back and healthy. However, even more believe that Washington is here to stay. Jayden Daniels is already the best quarterback in the division, and that always gives you a chance. Advertisement The 2025 season is now or never for New York GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. The Giants brought in a pair of veteran quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and drafted one in the first round, Jaxson Dart. Here's Edholm's full rankings: 1. NFC North 2. AFC North 3. AFC West 4. NFC East 5. NFC West 6. AFC East 7. NFC South 8. AFC South Is the NFC North really better than the AFC West? The Chiefs, Chargers, and Broncos are all playoff teams, and the Raiders should be much better immediately under Pete Carroll. While the NFC North also had three playoff teams, questions remain about the top two — the Lions and Vikings — and whether they can repeat their success. Detroit lost both coordinators and the Vikings are counting on quarterback J.J. McCaffrey to replace Sam Darnold. A mix of youth and chemistry has Red Sox rolling into All-Star break on 10-game winning streak

BOSTON — Many of the Boston Red Sox players started wearing T-shirts during batting practice and in the clubhouse the past week with a quote from teammate Romy Gonzalez written across the front. It says: 'Tremendously locked in.' They certainly look that way heading into the All-Star break. On Sunday, Ceddanne Rafaela hit a two-run homer and the Red Sox (53-45) posted their 10th straight victory with a 4-1, series-sweeping win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.
