Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey to be honoured at Cannes Film Festival despite new sexual misconduct claims

West Australian19-05-2025
Controversial actor Kevin Spacey is set to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival despite being hit with new sexual misconduct claims.
Spacey, who is also visiting the world's biggest film festival to help find buyers for his new film The Awakening, will be recognised for his 'artistic brilliance' and 'impact on cinema and arts.'
The disgraced actor will receive the Award for Excellence in Film and Television by the Better World Fund on Tuesday at the Fund's 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner.
While the event is not directly associated with the film festival, the celebrations will take place at the Carlton Hotel, which is one of the main sites of festival activity.
'We are truly privileged to welcome Kevin Spacey as our Guest of Honour and Honouree at the Better World Fund Gala,' President & Founder of the Better World Fund, Manuel Collas De La Roche, said in a statement.
'Kevin's extraordinary contributions to the art of cinema have left a mark on audiences and filmmakers alike. His talent, depth, and commitment to storytelling exemplify the transformative power of film. It is with great excitement that we celebrate his legacy and presence at this meaningful gathering.'
The Awakening will be one of Spacey's first projects since his career collapsed in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.
Last year in the UK, the scandal-plagued actor was acquitted of nine cases of alleged sexual offences. He was also previously cleared of sexual assault charges in a 2022 civil lawsuit in New York. However, the actor still remains a controversial figure linked with the #MeToo movement.
Earlier this month, new claims of inappropriate sexual behaviour emerged in a British documentary, Spacey Unmasked.
10 men who were not involved in the 2024 UK court case accused Spacey of behaving inappropriately towards them.
But the House of Cards actor denied any wrongdoing.
There's been speculation that Spacey could make an appearance on the red carpet at Cannes, however the festival is yet to confirm this.

Sharon Stone claims she had a heated 'argument' with Michael Douglas before Basic Instinct

Sharon Stone had an "argument" with Michael Douglas before they starred in Basic Instinct together. The pair featured as the leads in the 1992 erotic thriller but she recalled that they had previously got into a row at the Cannes Film Festival which meant they didn't do a screen test together. In an interview with Business Insider, Sharon said: "(He) did not want to put his bare a** out on the screen with an unknown - and I understood that. "He wouldn't even test with me, but that was also for a different reason: We had an argument prior to that." The 67-year-old actress continued: "A bunch of us were all sitting, and he was talking about someone and their kids. I really, really knew this person he was talking about. "So I said something and he responded to me, saying, 'What the f*** do you know?' It was in regard to a father-child relationship. "Clearly, it triggered him. So he screams this at me across a whole group of people. And I'm not the person who goes, 'Oh, excuse me, superstar.' I pushed back my chair and said to him, 'Let's step outside.' That's how we first met. "I explained to him what the f*** I knew about this family he was speaking about, and that I was best friends with the children and the parent. And then we parted, I wouldn't say as best friends, but amicably. "So, fast forward to casting Basic Instinct, I don't think he wanted me to be his co-star." However, Michael's representative Allen Burry claims that the Wall Street star, 80, is "very surprised" by Sharon's claims as "he doesn't remember any argument in that timeframe" between the pair. Burry told People: "He actually only remembers seeing and meeting Sharon for the first time when he saw (director) Paul Verhoeven's screen test of her for Basic Instinct and (Michael) said, 'Absolutely, she's the one.'" He added that Douglas "definitely spent time" with Stone at Cannes but that was when they were promoting Basic Instinct. Burry said: "And by the time they'd done the movie, they were friends." Sharon added that the previously fraught dynamic between the duo "worked great" once they got on set as she was "not rattled" by his fiery temper. The Casino star said: "That was interesting for the character because Michael has a temper, and I didn't care. That worked well in our dynamic." Sharon stressed that the argument is in the past and that the pair are now good pals. She said: "Eventually, we became the greatest of friends, to this day. "I admire him tremendously."

Brian Cox bemoans cancel culture

Brian Cox is "so against cancel culture". The 79-year-old actor has voiced his support for his "old friend" Kevin Spacey, who was exiled from the showbiz world in 2017 after he was accused of sexual misconduct and before he was acquitted at a trial in the UK in 2023. Brian told Sky News: "I am so against cancel culture. Kevin has made a lot of mistakes, but there is a sort of viciousness about it which is unwarranted. "Everybody is stupid as everybody else. Everybody is capable of the same mistakes and the same sins as everybody else." Spacey previously confessed to having been "too handsy" at times. But Brian thinks he could revive his acting career in the coming years. Asked if he could see a return to showbiz for Spacey, he replied: "I would think so eventually, but it's very tough for him. "He was tricky, but he has learnt a big lesson. He should be allowed to go on because he is a very fine actor. I just think we should be forgiving." Brian can't understand people who take joy in other people's misery. The veteran actor said: "What is the joy you get out of kicking somebody in the balls when they are down? That is what I cannot stand." Spacey previously opened up about his mistakes, confessing to being "too handsy" at times. During an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Spacey said: "[I was] pushing the boundaries ... being too handsy, you know. Touching someone sexually, in a way that I didn't know at the time that they didn't want." Asked if his behaviour amounted to groping, Spacey replied: "Yeah." The 66-year-old actor - who has enjoyed huge success on stage and screen - added: "I agree that the word grope is a very odd word. I personally ... I have caressed people. I have been gentle with people. That is the way that I am. "You're making a pass at someone, you don't want to be aggressive - you want to be gentle. You want to see if they're going to respond positively. So, I think the word itself is not a word that I associate with my experience."
