Halifax Wanderers to host Wrexham AFC in under-21 series in Atlantic Canada in July
The series will kick off July 5 at the Wanderers Grounds in Halifax before moving to Charlottetown on July 9 and Saint John, N.B., on July 12.
Wrexham, co-owned by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and American actor/producer Rob McElhenney, has won fame for its celebrity ownership and rise up the ranks captured in the documentary series 'Welcome to Wrexham.'
The Welsh side is headed to England's second-tier Championship, becoming the first team in England's top five tiers to win promotion three years in a row.
Founded in 1864, Wrexham bills itself as Wales' oldest professional football club and the third-oldest in the world.
This marks the third edition of the Wanderers' International Summer Series, which pits a Wanderers development team against pro sides from overseas.
'Wrexham AFC has become a truly global brand and is one of the fastest rising clubs in world football so we are thrilled to welcome them to the Maritimes this summer,' Halifax Wanderers president Derek Martin said in a statement. 'Our goal is to help grow this beautiful game across our region, so we are excited to be visiting Saint John for the first time and to bring a little bit of Hollywood to the Wanderers Grounds.'
In 2023, a Halifax Wanderers U23 team played Germany's Holstein Kiel in a three-game series in Moncton, Charlottetown, and Halifax. In 2024, the series expanded to five cities, with the Wanderers under-21 side facing U-21 teams from England's Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough.
'This is a fantastic opportunity for our young players and staff to experience soccer outside of the U.K. and Europe, providing much-needed development opportunities not just in soccer, but life skills too for our young professionals,' said Wrexham academy manager Andy Lowe. 'It also provides us with a great opportunity to build relationships with the local community, universities and professional clubs to develop future pathways and opportunities for young players.'
The Charlottetown game will be at UPEI Turf Field, while the Saint John stop is at the Canada Games Stadium.

Wimbledon: Taylor Fritz reaches the quarterfinals when Jordan Thompson quits with an injury
Associated Press LONDON (AP) — U.S. Open runner-up Taylor Fritz moved into the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the third time in four years on Sunday, advancing when his injured opponent, Jordan Thompson, quit while trailing 6-1, 3-0 after 41 minutes. The unseeded Thompson's movement and power were clearly compromised. The Australian entered the match with back and leg issues and left the court for a medical timeout in the second set Sunday, then stopped after trying to play for three more points. 'It's obviously not the way that I want to go through,' the No. 5-seeded Fritz said. 'It's just sad. ... Respect to him for coming out. His body's not right.' For Fritz, it was a shorter workday after playing a pair of five-setters and one four-setter earlier in the tournament. Now the American will meet No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia on Tuesday for a berth in the semifinals — a round neither has reached at the All England Club. Khachanov beat Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 Sunday. 'To be honest, today was a really great performance — at least from my side,' said Khachanov, who finished with more than twice as many winners as unforced errors, 44-21. The 109th-ranked Majchrzak was playing in a fourth-round match at a major for the first time. He was on a six-match Grand Slam losing streak before Wimbledon. Khachanov has been a Grand Slam semifinalist twice, at the U.S. Open in 2022 and the Australian Open in 2023. Fritz made it that far for the first time when he got to the final at Flushing Meadows in September before losing to No. 1 Jannik Sinner. What else happened at Wimbledon on Sunday? Other men's matches later were two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz vs. No. 14 Andrey Rublev, and Nicolas Jarry vs. Cam Norrie. The women's fourth-rounders on the Sunday schedule were No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. No. 24 Elise Mertens, No. 13 Amanda Anisimova vs. No. 30 Linda Noskova, Sonay Kartal vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and lucky loser Solana Sierra vs. Laura Siegemund. Who plays at the All England Club on Monday? The quarterfinals will be set after Monday's play, which leads off at Centre Court with 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic against No. 11 Alex de Minaur at 1:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. ET). They were supposed to face each other in last year's quarterfinals at Wimbledon, but de Minaur was forced to withdraw before the match with a hip injury. That's to be followed by No. 7 Mirra Andreeva vs. No. 10 Emma Navarro, who eliminated 2024 champion Barbora Krejcikova in the third round, and then No. 1 Jannik Sinner vs. No. 19 Grigor Dimitrov. Others in action: Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Marin Cilic. ___ More AP tennis:

‘Couldn't afford him' - Why Paul Mullin left Wrexham on loan as Wigan fended off interest from ‘a lot of other clubs' to land Red Dragons legend
WHAT HAPPENED? With a history-making run of three successive promotions helping Mullin to become a club legend in North Wales, a new challenge is being taken on in 2025 after slipping down the pecking order under Phil Parkinson. Advertisement THE BIGGER PICTURE Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are among those to have wished Mullin well as he steps back into League One and attempts to earn fan favourite status at a new club. There are still two years left to run on the 30-year-old striker's contract at SToK Racecourse. WHAT LOWE SAID Quizzed on why the Latics did not part with a fee for Mullin, Lowe told Wigan Today: 'We couldn't afford him! Listen, I don't know what else to simple fact is we couldn't afford a permanent deal. 'I spoke to Mulls at the back end of last season, we were given permission from Wrexham, to see whether he would be available on a loan. Although he only lives about three miles away from me, I didn't actually know him, but he's always been on my radar. I tried to take him to Plymouth when I was down there, because he's not only a fantastic footballer, he's also a fantastic lad. Advertisement 'He actually said to his agent he didn't want to go anywhere else if he was leaving Wrexham, he only wanted to come here, which reflects well not just on me but also the football club. There were a lot of other clubs who would have loved to have signed him, and it's great that he's seen the project here and wants to be a part of it.' DID YOU KNOW? Lowe added on adding Mullin's many qualities to his ranks: 'One of the attributes Paul would bring, as well as on the pitch, is off the pitch as a leader, and he's showed that already. Paul is 30 years of age but he looks like a 21-year-old in terms of his body and his condition. And he's definitely got a big part to play on and off the pitch.' Paul Mullin Wrexham 2024-25 WHAT NEXT FOR MULLIN? Mullin was one of the first marquee transfers completed by Reynolds and McElhenney following their stunning takeover at Wrexham in 2021. Severing ties with the Red Dragons was a tough call, but the Merseyside native has been able to remain in the North West of England with his young family.

Wimbledon: Ben Shelton pleaded for extra time off for his sister at Morgan Stanley. It worked
LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — Ben Shelton launched a public plea for his sister to get some extra time off from her job at investment bank Morgan Stanley so she could remain at Wimbledon to cheer for him. It worked. After advancing to face Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Monday in the fourth round, Shelton spoke in an on-court interview in front of a crowd that included his sister, Emma, and his girlfriend, U.S. national soccer team star Trinity Rodman. 'I've been playing well this week. It's not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My grildfriend's here. Also, my sister's here. She's been here for every match that I've played this tournament so far. She's been the lucky charm,' said the 10th-seeded Shelton, a 22-year-old American who has appeared in two Grand Slam semifinals. 'But she has work back in the U.S., starting on Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley.' That drew some boos from spectators as Emma covered her face with her hands. 'If any of you all have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay and) we can keep this rolling,' Shelton continued after his 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Marton Fucsovics of Hungary on Saturday, 'that'd be great.' Sure enough, hours later, Emma posted a short video on Instagram in which Ben is heard asking her, 'You got the week off or what?' She jumps up and down with her arms raised and a wide smile, and Ben says, 'Shoutout, Morgan Stanley.' The caption reads 'thank you MS' with three blue heart emojis and 'return flight: cancelled.' beat Sonego in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January.
