One of the city's early ramen restaurants has closed in the East Village.Minca's final service was Monday night after first opening in 2004. The restaurant at 536 East Fifth Street between Avenues A and B served Tokyo-style ramen – thick noodles, a spicy miso broth, and a selection of toppings. 'This long-running East Village ramen parlor established itself way before Ippudo,' former critic Robert Sietsema wrote, 'and it takes its ramen every bit as seriously — with a jazz soundtrack.' While it remained low-key, it had its share of neighborhood regulars. EV Grieve reports the owner, Shigeto Kamada, wants to retire.
Momofuku switches up brunch
After 20 years, Momofuku Noodle Bar (171 First Avenue, between 10th and 11th streets) in the East Village has switched up its brunch menu along with expanding hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Look for items like egg buns, double-stack shrimp burger, bluefin tuna toast with a $70 fancy caviar add-on, and crispy rice with kimchi, pork belly, and bok choy.
Two New York chains expand
Two New York chains are opening in high-traffic locations. First, there's Van Leeuwen that is now open at 1 Penn Plaza, one of many locations around the city. It joins Anita Gelato and Davey's Ice Cream for scoop options in the neighborhood that has transformed over the past year, with openings from Roberta's first Manhattan spot, a Los Tacos location, a Blue Ribbon restaurant, pickleball courts, and more.
Another homegrown chain, Shake Shack, will open in Rockefeller Center on Thursday, July 17 at 10 a.m. as part of the collection of places at the lower-rink level now called Under 30 Rock; it joins another Danny Meyer offshoot there, Daily Provisions. On opening day, the restaurant will donate $1 for every sandwich sold at this location to City Harvest.

Matcha Prices Set to Double--And One Japanese Stock Could Benefit Big

Ito En (ITONF), Japan's largest tea company, is raising prices on its premium matcha productsby up to 100%starting September 1. This move comes as global demand continues to outpace supply, with tourists and influencers fueling a matcha craze that's leaving shelves empty. More than a dozen of Ito En's high-grade matcha items are already sold out online, underscoring the intensity of the surge. The company says it's facing a widening gap between surging demand and shrinking domestic output. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 1 Warning Sign with ITONF. That imbalance is showing up in the numbers. In 2024, Japan's green tea exports hit a record 36.4 billion ($244 million), marking a 25% jump from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Matcha is leading the charge, thanks to its rising popularity in wellness circles and specialty cafes worldwide. For investors, that trend could translate into sustained pricing power and premium brand tailwinds for Ito Enespecially as global consumers snap up ceremonial-grade products that are becoming harder to source. But the real bottleneck might not be in the marketit's on the farms. Ito En points to an aging farmer population and lack of generational handover as key headwinds. The average age of farmers in Japan reached 69.2 this year, making long-term supply growth a serious question mark. As output tightens and costs rise, Ito En's pricing moves may not just reflect opportunismbut necessity. That could make the stock a unique inflation hedge in a niche category with both scarcity value and global cultural momentum. This article first appeared on GuruFocus.

Metaplanet Plans $3.7B Stock Raise to Fuel Massive Bitcoin Buying Spree

Metaplanet announced Friday it has filed to raise $3.7 billion (¥555 billion) through a massive stock offering to fund one of Asia's largest corporate Bitcoin accumulation strategies. The Tokyo-listed investment firm filed a shelf registration effective from August 9, 2025 until August 8, 2027, allowing it to issue securities in portions when market conditions align. The proposed raise represents approximately 75% of Metaplanet's current market capitalization of $4.9 billion (729.45 billion yen). "The Company intends to actively pursue equity financing as part of its 'Bitcoin Strategy,'" Metaplanet said in the filing. "We believe that introducing Bitcoin-backed preferred shares represents a pioneering effort to fill this gap." This capital-raising effort supports Metaplanet's previously announced goal of accumulating 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027, a target that would require the company to increase its current holdings more than twelvefold. The company currently holds 17,132 BTC worth over $1.97 billion at a price of $114,396, following its most recent purchase of 780 BTC on July 28. The proposal involves establishing two new classes of perpetual preferred shares, Class A and Class B, each with potential issuance values of $1.9 billion (277.5 billion yen). These shares would offer dividend payouts up to 6% annually, taking priority over common shareholders, with all proceeds earmarked specifically for Bitcoin acquisitions. However, the company cautioned that "no specific plan for the issuance of the Preferred Shares is currently in progress, and it is uncertain whether such issuance will take place." The proposal also requires increasing authorized shares from 1.61 billion to 2.723 billion, which shareholders will vote on at an Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for September 1. The Bitcoin treasury strategy Metaplanet's approach follows that of Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury, which earlier this week secured $2.5 billion by issuing STRC, a perpetual preferred stock designed to pay a floating monthly dividend starting at 9%. Bitcoin is trading at a price of $115,869, down 2% in the last 24 hours, according to CoinGecko. Despite current market conditions, QCP Capital shared in its latest report that "ongoing accumulation efforts" by companies like Startegy demonstrate 'long-term conviction.' However, the firm cautioned that price action failing to respond to positive headlines represents "textbook late-cycle behaviour."
