Granit Xhaka explains Sunderland transfer as ex-Arsenal star makes Premier League return
Granit Xhaka felt the opportunity to establish Sunderland in the Premier League made returning to England too good an opportunity to turn down following his move from Bayer Leverkusen.
The former Arsenal star, 32, left the English top-flight two years ago for the Bundesliga, which he won with Leverkusen in his maiden campaign. However, rumblings of another transfer have persisted in recent months and Sunderland have now brought the midfielder back to the Premier League.
Sunderland won promotion to the top-flight via the play-offs last year and their capture of Xhaka - a key figure previously at Arsenal - is a major coup.
The Switzerland international says he was 'excited' following discussions over a switch to the Stadium of Light and hopes his experience can help the Black Cats avoid an instant return to the Championship.
'I'm very proud to be here,' Xhaka told the club's official website after completing his move.
'When I spoke to the Club, I was excited and I felt the energy, and the mentality that all the people and players have. It's exactly what I wanted, and I have a very good feeling. We are back to where this Club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history.
'I feel that I'm ready to help the team with my experience but with quality as well. We need to find ourselves on the pitch, but I don't think this will be a big problem. It's been a long time to wait, but I'm here now and I'm looking forward to it.'
Xhaka made 297 appearances during his time at Arsenal, where he also captained the side on occasions. He won two FA Cups and was part of the side that came close to winning the title before moving on.
Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland's sporting director, feels that landing Xhaka is a sign of the club's ambition upon their return to the top-flight after an eight-year absence.
He added: 'We're delighted to welcome Granit and his family to Sunderland. His arrival is a significant endorsement of our ambition and our desire to build a team our supporters can be proud of in the Premier League. His accomplishments and quality need little introduction – he's a player of the highest calibre on and off the field, who we feel is the perfect match to the profile required in our team.

Reuell Walters finally had Luton's first shot on target after 63 minutes, drawing an outstanding one-handed save from Bishop with a drilled half-volley from range. Wimbledon looked to have done enough to earn a point, but then came Johnson's unfortunate wayward header to gift the Hatters victory.

England and Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating has been fined after being found guilty of driving without the correct tax just days after celebrating the Lionesses' Euro 2025 win Lionesses star Khiara Keating has been fined just days after she lifted the Euro 2025 title with England. Keating was part of the England squad that retained the Euros on Sunday by beating Spain on penalties in the final. However, just days after lifting the trophy in Basel, Keating was fined for not paying her car tax. On Wednesday, magistrates fined Keating £440 and ordered her to pay back duty of £79.17 and costs of £20 after she had been stopped for driving a Volkswagen Polo without the correct tax back in December. The 21-year-old did not attend Tameside Magistrates' court and the case was heard in her absence. Just a few weeks before the Euros began, Keating was cleared of drugs charges after Greater Manchester Police dropped them. Keating and her mother, Nicola, were charged last June with possession of the Class C drug nitrous oxide. They both pleaded not guilty and the charges were dropped in June. "I'm relieved the charges have been dropped — as I've always said, I did nothing wrong," Keating told the BBC. "It's been a difficult time, but I've always known the truth. Now I'm just looking forward to focusing fully on the Euros and spending time with my family." Keating did not play at the Euros with Hannah Hampton starring as first-choice goalkeeper, but she was an important part of the squad and was part of the jubilant celebrations that took place after they returned to the UK. A victory parade took place on Wednesday in front of more than 50,000 fans, with England captain Leah Williamson stating: "I'm holding back tears. I've been crying all down The Mall. "This is unbelievable, this is probably one of the best [things] we have ever been a part of, so thank you for coming out. "There are many ways to win a football match. And we repeatedly did it the hard way, but you can see how much we care about playing for England and how much we love it." Chloe Kelly added: "It feels so good to stand side by side with each and every one of these girls. It's so ******* special.
