'Peter will be involved in all areas of hockey operations including player evaluation, player recruitment and strategic planning,' Conroy said in a press release. 'Together with Assistant General Managers Dave Nonis and Brad Pascall, Peter will help us pursue our goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Calgary.'
Hanlon has worked in the hockey world for over 30 years, beginning his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate, who were playing in St. John's, Nfld, at the time. He was then recruited to work at the AHL head office before joining the Flames.
He has considerable experience at the international level, too, having been a part of Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics, multiple world championships and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
That's experience the Flames clearly put a lot of stock in.
'Peter has worked in professional hockey for over 30 years,' Maloney said. 'His knowledge and experience are a welcomed addition to our staff.'

Sabres avoid arbitration with Bowen Byram by signing him to a 2-year, $12.5M contract

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres avoided arbitration with Bowen Byram late Monday night by re-signing the restricted free agent defenseman to a two-year contract worth $12.5 million. Byram will count $6.25 million against the salary cap through the 2026-27 NHL season. He was considered a candidate for a trade or an offer sheet from another team before the Sabres elected salary arbitration with him earlier this month. The 24-year-old is coming off setting career highs with 31 assists, 38 points and 116 blocked shots while playing all 82 games in his first full season with Buffalo. The team acquired him from Colorado in exchange for center Casey Mittelstadt at the 2024 trade deadline. Byram had nine points on the Avalanche's 2022 Stanley Cup run. He has 33 goals and 89 assists in 273 regular-season and playoff games since debuting in the league in 2021. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP NHL:

World Championships open water swimming postponed due to poor water quality

SINGAPORE (AP) — Open water swimming at the World Championships in Singapore has been postponed because of 'water quality levels exceeding acceptable thresholds,' the governing body World Aquatics said in a statement. The women's 10-kilometer event was to have opened the program Tuesday but was pushed back to Wednesday. It will be held the same day as the men's 10-kilometer event. Other open water events are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Open water swimming was an issue in last year's Olympics in Paris with concerns about water quality in the Seine River. It was also an issue at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Water polo competition at the worlds is underway at an indoor venue. The main even of the championships is eight days of swimming competition in the pool, which opens on July 27. ___ AP sports:
