Indian villagers beat five to death for 'witchcraft' in northern state of Bihar
Three people have been arrested and have confessed to the crime, police in the northern state of Bihar said in a statement.
Three women -- including a 75-year-old -- were among those murdered.
The main accused believed that his son's recent death was caused by one of those killed, and blamed "him and his family of practising witchcraft", the statement said.
"After beating the victims to death, the perpetrators loaded the bodies onto a tractor and dumped them in a pond," police said.
The murderers and victims all belonged to India's Oraon tribe in Bihar, India's poorest state and a mainly Hindu region of at least 130 million people.
Despite campaigns against superstition, belief in witchcraft remains widespread in rural areas across India, especially in isolated tribal communities.
Some states, including Bihar, have introduced laws to try to curb crimes against people accused of witchcraft and superstition.
Women have often been branded witches and targeted, but the killing of the family of five stands out as a particularly heinous recent example.
More than 1,500 people -- the overwhelming majority of them women -- were killed in India on suspicion of witchcraft between 2010 and 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
Some believe in the occult, but attackers also sometimes have other motives including usurping their rights over land and property.

Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old Indian nurse from Kerala, is scheduled to be executed on July 16 for killing a Yemeni national, according to reports. A trial court convicted her of murde r and the decision was upheld by the country's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. Sources have noted that they are closely following the matter on the case where she was convicted for the crime of murder in Yemen in June 2018. As per the sources, "Nimisha Priya was convicted for the crime of murder in Yemen in June 2018 and the local court handed out death sentence to her. We have been closely following the matter since then. We have been in regular touch with local authorities and her family members and rendered all possible assistance. We continue to closely follow the matter." Previously, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed its awareness of the death sentence handed to Nimisha Priya and assured that the government is providing all possible assistance. Earlier, in response to media queries regarding the case, MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said, "We are aware of the sentencing of Ms Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family of Ms. Priya is exploring relevant options. The government is extending all possible help in the matter." In January 2025, the Indian government had reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Nimisha Priya. She is a trained nurse and has worked in private hospitals in Yemen for a few years. Her husband and minor daughter returned to India in 2014 because of financial reasons and in that same year, Yemen was gripped by civil war, and they could not go back as the country stopped issuing new visas. In 2015, Nimisha joined hands with a Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi, to set up her clinic in Sana. She sought Mahdi's support because, under Yemen's law, only nationals are allowed to set up clinics and business firms. In 2015, Mahdi accompanied Nimisha Priya to Kerala when she visited for a month-long holiday. During the visit, he stole a wedding photograph of Nimisha, which he later manipulated to claim that he was married to her. A plea moved by the mother of Nimisha Priya had stated, "After a while, Nimisha's clinic began, Mahdi manipulated the ownership documents of the clinic. He also began to take money out of her monthly earnings after telling everyone that Nimisha was his wife. Nimisha had alleged that Mahdi had been harassing her and her family for years. Mahdi also seized her passport. This was done to ensure that she would not leave Yemen. He tortured her under the influence of drugs. He threatened her at gunpoint several times. He took all the money from the clinic and her ornaments." The plea further alleged that unable to cope with the torture, Nimisha complained to the police in Sana but instead of taking action against Mahdi, the police arrested her and put her in jail for six days. It was further alleged that on her return from jail, the severity of the torture increased manifold. In July 2017, Nimisha took the help of a warden of a jail located near her clinic. The warden suggested that she should try to sedate him, and then convince him to give her passport. However, sedation did not affect Mahdi, who was a substance abuser. She tried sedating him again, using a stronger sedative in order to retrieve her passport but he died within a few minutes due to a drug overdose.

Soubin Shahir granted anticipatory bail in 'Manjummel Boys' financial fraud case
Actor Soubin Shahir was arrested in Kochi, allegedly in a financial fraud case related to the film Manjummel Boys. The court has granted anticipatory bail, and he will be released after recording his arrest, the Kochi police said. The police had registered a case against actor-producer Shahir and Shawn Antony, a producer, on a complaint by Siraj Valiathara Hameed that they had not paid him the share of the profit made from the movie, despite his contribution of Rs 7 crore towards its production. Hameed, in his complaint, had mentioned that the producer duo did not even pay him his share of investment for making the movie and that they transferred the profits to their own accounts. This was a violation of the investment agreement he had executed with the producing company, as per the Kochi police. Earlier in 2024, after the success of Manjummel Boys, the Enforcement Directorate launched an investigation into alleged financial irregularities by Soubin's Parava Films. On the work front, Soubin started his film career as an assistant director in the industry with Siddique's Chronic Bachelor (2003). He is known for his works in Charlie (2015), Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), Kali (2016), Darvinte Parinamam (2016), Kammatipaadam (2016), Anuraga Karikkin Vellam (2016), Mayanadhi (2017), and Kumbalangi Nights. India: CBI cracks down on cybercrime syndicate scamming UK, Australian citizens
India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has cracked down on a transnational cybercrime syndicate running a sophisticated tech support scam targeting citizens of the United Kingdom and Australia, as part of their Operation Chakra-V. The syndicate's call centre was operating under the name FirstIdea. The key operative partner of FirstIdea has been arrested, the CBI said in a statement. The syndicate posed as technical support staff of reputed multinational companies, including Microsoft. The fraudsters were cheating foreign nationals by falsely claiming that their devices were compromised, and extorted money under the guise of resolving non-existent technical issues. The CBI collaborated closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Crime Agency (UK), and Microsoft Corporation, to trace the syndicate's operations and locations. Searches were carried out at three locations in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, including at a fully functional fraudulent call centre operating from the Noida Special Economic Zone. The operation was meticulously timed with the time zones of the victims, resulting in the detection of live scam calls in progress during the raids, the CBI said in a statement. During the searches, the CBI seized extensive evidence, including advanced calling infrastructure, malicious scripts used to deceive victims, and documents revealing the scale of the fraud and extortion. Firstldea, was found to be technologically sophisticated, enabling cross-border anonymity and large-scale victim targeting. The arrested partner is being produced before the Special CBI Court today, July 8.
