Battery technology to make big leaps in 2026, as single-cell capacity expected to hit 9,000 mAh

The amount of silicon included in today's batteries is about 10%, which allowed Chinese brands like Oppo, Xiaomi, Honor, Nubia and OnePlus to include 7000+ mAh batteries onto their phones without having to make them bulkier. Oppo was the first company that managed to include 10 percent silicon in a smartphone battery. Even though it doesn't have an extremely large battery (6,500 mAh), the Realme GT7 Pro is the first phone to pack a battery with 10 percent silicon content.
But Oppo has been testing a 15% silicon 8,000 mAh battery for six months, Digital Chat Station claims, so its next phones are expected to adopt the new battery cell design. To make things even more exciting, the reliable tipster says that Chinese manufactures are already testing even bigger capacity batteries. Oppo, Honor and a few other brands are considering increasing the amount of silicon inside their batteries by 25-30 percent starting next year.In fact, the next-generation phones expected to arrive later this year may ship with batteries that pack 20 percent silicon, double the value used in today's silicon-based batteries. Another exciting piece of information is that the battery capacity of upcoming smartphones is expected to reach 8,500 mAh for single-cell designs by next year. It's important to mention that the not-so-many smartphones that use silicon batteries are based on dual-cell designs.But the good news doesn't stop here! Apparently, preliminary research is underway for 9,000 mAh batteries, which means that many companies have begun testing these huge batteries in their research labs. It will probably take 6 months up to 1 year to make sure they're reliable and the technology is viable.Last but not least, a new type of batteries might be adopted by smartphone makers beginning next year. Metal-shell batteries offer superior volume efficiency, which means they can increase capacity in the same physical space. At the moment, metal-shell batteries can increase capacity by roughly 5 percent, which might not seem a lot, but this is actually an incredible achievement considering that we're talking about sizes that are smaller than 1mm.
The first phone to feature batteries that have about 15 percent silicon are slated to arrive as early as September. Some manufacturers will be even bolder with their phones and will include batteries that have 20 percent silicon. Honor even went above and beyond with its upcoming foldable flagship, the Magic V5, which is expected to feature a battery that has no less than 25 percent silicon content. The highly anticipated foldable will be officially introduced in China on July 2, followed by a global release in the coming weeks.

However, it seems that Apple's marketing for the foldable iPhone — which will present it as the best iPhone — relies on it being launched alongside the iPhone 18 series. The new Pro model may be accompanied by a foldable iPad that also has no cutouts on its display: Face ID or otherwise. Though, whether Apple would want to risk upstaging the iPhone on its special day is debatable. Apple users are eating ( swiping? ) good for these next few years. From the redesigned iPhone 17 Pro, the new iPhone 17 Air, the redesigned iPhone 18, and the 20th anniversary iPhone Pro, Apple fans are going to have a ton of choice for a long time. Throw in a foldable iPad , and you're golden. Not to mention the cheaper MacBook powered by an iPhone foldable industry has been on a decline, and Samsung has had to revise sales expectations for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7 . Whether the foldable iPhone and iPad are able to reverse this decline, given Apple's extremely late entry, is unclear. Part of the reason for this decline is the costs of these devices, and Apple's products aren't going to come cheap. However, I'm glad to know that we're getting more competition and further variety in the market. Samsung is expected to unveil its tri-foldable Galaxy G Fold in July, and possibly launch it later this year. Samsung is having major profitability issues due (among others) to poor Galaxy S25 series sales
Following a year-opening quarter of record-breaking earnings and strong profits, the world's top smartphone vendor is reportedly bracing for much worse numbers in the April-June 2025 timeframe. Because Samsung is a key player in a lot of global industries, its shrinking figures projected by Korean media outlets (translated here) are likely to have many contributing factors. One of the biggest causes is apparently a general economic slowdown noticed around the world across multiple tech product categories, including... you guessed it, smartphones. Despite a solid start at the global box-office, which was highlighted in Samsung 's detailed Q1 2025 financial report, the Galaxy S25 family is purportedly struggling to maintain a healthy sales pace now. As you can imagine, I don't have any exact numbers (official or unofficial) to illustrate the decline in popularity of Samsung's latest ultra-high-end handsets between Q1 and Q2 2025, but on the whole, the Korea-based tech giant is only expected to report profits in the "low to mid 5 trillion won range" for this year's April to June quarter. 5 trillion won roughly equates to 3.67 billion US dollars today, mind you, which would be a tremendous quarterly profit score for the vast majority of the world's top tech companies. But for Samsung, that's far from an impressive number, falling way short of forecasts averaging nearly 7 trillion won at the beginning of Q2. What's worse is that the company's projected Q2 2025 profit tally could represent a major decrease from the same numbers reported both in Q1 2025 and Q2 2024. Between April and June of last year, for instance, Samsung yielded a net gain of more than 10 trillion won, and while the economic climate is obviously different now, a decline of around 50 percent is hard to blame on just that one factor. A "continued slump" in the semiconductor segment, Trump's tariffs (obviously), and increased logistics costs impacting the profitability of everything from mobile devices to TVs and home appliances are instead likely to be blamed equally when Samsung's full Q2 2025 report comes out in a few weeks. Until then, let's hope that the company will try to battle the S25 family's rumored slump with more aggressive (and more frequent) promotions in key markets like the US.
