The holy city, the abode of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Puri, is ready for the Rath Yatra. It is a journey of faith for millions of devotees coming from across the globe. And Bhartiya Rail is at the service of these pilgrims, facilitating their overall experience in Shreekshetra Puri.
Last 11 years have been historic for Odisha's railway infrastructure development. Under PM Shri Narendra Modi's Purvodaya policy, Odisha's railway budget allocation has seen 12 times jump to over Rs 10,500 crore in 2025-26 as compared to the annual average during 2009-14. Since 2014, over 2,100 km of new tracks have been laid in Odisha — more than the entire rail network of Malaysia. Approximately Rs 73,000 crore worth of projects for constructing new tracks in Odisha are going on.
Altogether 59 Amrit stations are being developed, including 16 stations in aspirational districts. Six Vande Bharat services covering 17 districts are operational.

to Odisha is during the Rath Yatra. The railways undertakes the task of serving lakhs of Rath Yatra pilgrims every year.

A total of 1,215 train services, including 850 regular and 365 special train services, are being provided this year for Jagannath Puri. These services connect many districts of Odisha, including aspirational districts of Kalahandi, Balangir, Nuapada, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Dhenkanal and interior tribal regions to Shreekshetra Puri.
An AI-based real-time demand prediction system has enabled dynamic scheduling.
Ten platforms are welcoming the pilgrims this year. Additional ticket counters have also been set up at Puri as well as other railway stations.
A comfortable visit for a divine experience
With the spirit of 'Seva Parmo Dharma', Bhartiya Rail ensures dignity, comfort, and security of the pilgrims during the Rath Yatra. This year marks one of the largest facilitation drives for inclusive pilgrimage travel. The railways is ready to cater to around 20 lakh passengers with a daily peak of 2 lakh.
A holding space with a capacity to accommodate 25,000 pilgrims has been designated. Adequate arrangements have been made to provide relief from the hot weather.
Sufficient food stalls and water booths & coolers have been arranged. An estimated 2.5 lakh free meals will be served to the pilgrims.
Sanitation and cleanliness arrangements, including modern jet cleaning machines and sewage suction trucks are also in place.
A much larger pool of security personnel have been deployed for ensuring safety and security of the pilgrims. They will be supported with CCTVs, drones, and face recognition systems. Accessibility needs of Divyangjans, elderly, women, and medically vulnerable pilgrims have also been taken care of.
Medical booths with doctors and paramedics, ambulances, and first-aid counters have been set up. This year, Indian Railways has converted Puri station into a model of inclusive and faith-centred public service.
Special railway jacks for a special cause
A team of Indian Railways, including engineers and technicians, is also deployed at the Rath Yatra. This team is responsible for ensuring smooth movement and repair work of the chariots during the Yatra. The team assists in transporting the massive chariots from the construction site to Shree Jagannath temple. The railways team uses the special screw jacks for ensuring proper positioning, alignment, and forward movement of the chariots on the designated path.
It also helps in removing any obstacles and maintaining adequate distance between the chariots. The team accompanies the chariots till the completion of the Yatra.
Bhartiya Rail is fondly called as the lifeline of the nation. It remains committed to the service of all Indians, including the pilgrims, who consider Rath Yatra as their lifeline.

While women make up the majority of shoppers and tourists in these bustling markets, they face a daily struggle that few notice: safe and accessible public toilets. Even so, authorities at the civic bodies and the tourism department boast of the city being tourist-friendly. From Tripolia Gate to Chhoti Chaupar, not a single functional public toilet exists for women. This is despite the area being dotted with shops selling women's clothing, bangles and bridal wear. In Maniharon Ka Rasta, known for its handcrafted lac bangles, 65-year-old shop owner Shabnam Kauser says, "I have been working at this shop for over 50 years but there has never been a toilet for women. I have to walk 700 metres to my house just to use one. Sometimes I hold it in for over three hours, which has begun to affect my health." Her brother adds, "Many women customers request us to suggest a toilet nearby. We try sending them to a nearby Jain temple but the priests often argue and ask us not to send anyone there." And even when they find one, it's filthy. Khazane Walon Ka Rasta, famous for bargain shopping, does have a public toilet near the main road but it is almost invisible. Suresh Saini, vice-president of the market traders' association, said, "We've complained to JMC-H multiple times. They simply counter-question, saying, tell us where to build (toilets)? If that's the approach of civic officials, neither customers will come, nor will businesses survive for long. " Commissioner of JMC-H, Nidhi Patel, said, "We have not received any complaints about toilet shortages for women. We did get complaints regarding poor cleanliness. We've held meetings with Sulabh to address this issue. They have been asked to focus more on tourist areas."

Seven year itch: For coastal road project, Mumbai civic body plans to raze Rs 27 crore flyover inaugurated in Aug 2018
Mumbai: As part of the Coastal Road 2 project, which will connect Versova and Dahisar, the BMC needs to demolish the Veer Savarkar flyover in Goregaon, a structure built at a cost of Rs 27 crore and thrown open just seven years ago. The move has raised eyebrows, with some calling it an example of bad planning and a waste of public money. Savarkar flyover, inaugurated in Aug 2018 and locally called the MTNL flyover, runs from Radisson Hotel to Rustomjee Ozone. After demolition, it is proposed to come back in a new avatar, as the lower deck of a two-deck flyover. "We studied the situation to see if there was any way out other than demolishing the flyover," an official said. "After finding no other option, we will now be proposing the demolition of the Savarkar flyover. We have proposed a double-decker flyover, the upper deck of which will act as a connector between Mindspace and Dindoshi court, while the lower deck will accommodate the (new) Savarkar flyover." A proposal will soon be sent to the municipal commissioner for his sanction. The official said that the stretch of the proposed coastal road from Mindspace to Dindoshi court, which will connect to the proposed Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), forms a part of one of the many project packages of Coastal Road 2. "The idea is to allow motorists to seamlessly connect from the coastal road to the GMLR tunnels and onwards to the eastern suburbs," the official said. Municipal sources said a former BMC officer had pointed out that the Savarkar flyover would be coming in the way of the Coastal Road 2 project about a year ago but it was now that a proposal to resolve the issue was being worked out. Former Goregaon corporator Deepak Thakur said the MTNL flyover is one of the most crucial connectors in the area, and demolishing it will lead to traffic chaos. "Before the flyover was constructed, it would even take up to 45 minutes to cross the junction. Now, with its demolition planned, traffic going towards areas like Malad, Madh and Marve will be badly hit," he said, adding that contractors involved in the works had already begun a survey of the area. The move has raised eyebrows as it involves dismantling a relatively new bridge to make way for infrastructure that will further alter the suburban landscape. Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh called it bad planning. "The Coastal Road (North) has been in the planning for many years. How can we realise now that it will need to demolish a flyover which was built less than a decade ago? Further, this is public money that the administration is wasting. Some accountability is required," Shaikh said. Works on the coastal road have gained pace, with authorities conducting regular inspections of the site in the past few weeks. The proposed demolition of the Goregaon flyover mirrors the recent removal of a major stretch of the Bandra (West) skywalk — dismantled between 2019 and 2024 — to make way for Metro Line 2B, which connects DN Nagar to Mandale. The Coastal Road (North), or the Versova-Dahisar Link Road (VDLR), is a 22-km alignment that includes roads on the ground, elevated sections, stilts, a cable-stayed bridge, and a cut-and-cover tunnel beneath a creek.

50% fall in tourists taking Palace on Wheels; RTDC,private co play blame game
Jaipur: Occupancies have fallen by over 50% in the state's flagship heritage tourist train, Palace on Wheels, in the past two years, with the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) raising contractual violations by the private company which had taken up operations in 2023-24 at its review meeting on Monday, sources said. In 2024-25, the number of tourists taking the luxury train fell to 685 compared to 811 the year before. In fact, the number has come down to less than 50% when compared to FY19 and FY20, when over 1,500 tourists took the train. In 2023-24, the train was leased to a private company for operation and management (O&M) with an annual fee of Rs 5 crore with an additional 18% on revenues. RTDC officials say the private company is delaying the payments. Even though it recently paid the annual fees, it has not yet deposited the GST. Sources also blamed the laxity of RTDC for the issue. The private company, in a letter to the RTDC MD, stated that the GST was a dispute that had to be resolved. "The private operator of the train has given discounts of up to 40% to sales agents, overshooting the 18% stipulated in the agreement. If the discounts are high, then the corporation loses revenue," said the source. Similarly, the private operator is liable to pay about Rs 75 lakh interest on payment delays, which the RTDC has not pursued in earnest. However, the O&M company is contesting the interest liability. Also, there has been a diversion of destinations, which was not addressed by the corporation. Sources in the corporation alleged violations of the contract as space for the spa and gym in the train was reduced in the name of renovation to make room for an additional berth. Similarly, all income that needed to come to the escrow account did not happen, sources said. The account was mandated by the agreement, but RTDC overlooked the irregularities. While the private company has said that the bookings have been affected due to the reduction in foreign tourist arrivals, the tourism department's numbers show an increase. The arrival of foreign visitors crossed the pre-Covid level in 2023-24 and 2024-25, according to the department. In 2024, 20.68 lakh foreign tourists visited Rajasthan, up from the pre-Covid peak of 17.54 lakh.
